Groundskeeper Wallie (Assault Formation)

Casual Multiplayer RGW (Naya) Theme/Gimmick Tribal

As soon as I saw Assault Formation, I knew I had to break it. Do you dream of smashing face with three-mana 13/13s? Do you see those fancy-shmancy Hornet Queens in Standard and wish, "know what's better than a 1/1 flying deathtouch? A 5/5 flying, deathtouch, vigilance, firebreathing!" Do you chuckle with Deviant Glee when you turn "fair" multiplayer effects oppressive to everyone but yourself? Do you know how banding (yes, you heard right) works? Then this is the deck for you!!! How the deck works on the surface is pretty straightforward. Blossoms, Omens, and Mulch dig through your deck rather quickly while turning on Overgrown to cast those cards you just drew. I fiddled with the manabase in solitaire and the engine purrs like a Steppe Lynx. You're digging for Formation, obviously. Without it, your deck is (shockingly) a bunch of walls. With Formation alone you can win with your collection of 3/3s and 4/4s. The best thing about formation is its third line of text. The deck would work fine with just the first two lines, but the Leonin Sun Standard effect means that even in the late game your Overgrowns something to do. Pump, pump, smack your foes around with Walls. What casual fun. But then there's the super secret tech: Gates. Poor Gates. They let us Hold them but only because our creatures are Creepin' on 'em. Stockholm Syndrome? More toughness makes all of our defenders better, but none more so than Hornet's Nest. You get a bee for EVERY point of damage the Nest takes for any reason. So with Hold out, your Nest can take more damage, churning out bees that, guess what, get the same bonuses. Then Formation comes down and things get truly nuts. But what happens when your opponents aren't playing creature decks? As you may have guessed, even the most non-interactive of casual black or blue decks will find themselves well-stocked with Spirit and Survivor tokens to turn on your Nests and Phytohydrae that way.
