So, I play Ghave in a cedh environment normally. But Urza has taken over like a plague and dominating along with Frog. I found this list, so I just wanna say thanks for all the hard and such. You've inspired me to build this list.

Shimmer Zur is extremely strong. You'll do well with it.

So me and two other people in my playgroup have become very interested in cEDH and I wanted an interesting deck which requires lots of thinking to pilot. There is a Baral polymorph-control and a consultation breya. I really like this deck but I have a few questions before I build it.

  1. can it function without Scroll Rack , Timetwister , Vampiric Tutor , Imperial Seal , Scroll Rack , Grim Monolith , Mana Crypt , Lion's Eye Diamond , Mox Opal , Mox Diamond , Force of Will and Mana Drain ?
  2. Is Tainted Zur or this list more fun to pilot
  3. Which deck is better into breya/baral

we are all reasonably budget decks as none of us can really afford anything over like $100

I keep running into an issue when playing this deck. I never seem to hit Shimmer Myr off of Necropotence . Do I just have terrible luck or is there something I’m just missing.

You will only hit shimmer off Necro roughly a third of the time depending on how much life you pay and how much of the deck remains. The idea is to use the instant speed spells to assemble a win, whether that's using shimmer or not.

That can come as naus grace, quicken + yawg/windfall + notion thief, tutor for shimmer and draw, etc.

Thanks!! Sounds like I need to get more games in, so I can get a feel for it.

Not saying that I would run it in a deck with Black, but Trophy Mage can tutor for Shimmer Myr if you really want to give up the speed to run it in your deck. It has a better place in a deck lacking Black like Brago, but it is possible to tutor for the Myr that way.

Will you be making room for Arcane Signet in any of your Zur lists? If so, what will be the cut?

Suasion says... #9

As soon as it's out, yep. It will probably replace talisman of hierarchy in both lists

I really like this deck but I dont think I'll get the lions-eye daimond or the expensive duel lands. Any suggestions?

If you can still swing the other mana positive rocks, try Tainted Shimmer Zur

it's the better version of this deck and doesn't need LED. Then you can use a budget mana base.

IF you prefer to use this one anyway, you'll have to use doomsday later or make a crappier pile.

If you can get some but not all mana positive rocks, consider etherium sculptor and rain of filth as budget slots.

what do u think about wishclaw talisman?

September 17, 2019 7:17 a.m.

TekGGs says... #13

wishclaw is honestly bad. 1 u need to pay 3 mana to tutor, which most of the good tutors usually cost 1 or 2. Whats worse u give an opponent wishclaw. So now your giving players a free tutor.

TekGGs In this deck the use of Shimmer Myr means it can be a 3 mana, , tutor for a card at instand speed to hand. No card does that, and it makes Grim Tutor look bad on combo turn in comparison. Not to say it is good, but it is a lot better than you are giving credit for.

Giving it to an opponent isn't a real thing if you can Chain of Vapor , Cyclonic Rift , or Hurkyl's Recall it before or after (dependent on the card) to the activation. In fact those 3 allow you to reuse the tutor, making comboing a breeze.

Is Scheming Symmetry a good tutor in this deck, specifically for cEDH? It's basically a Demonic Tutor that costs less, but the only downside is that another opponent gets to tutor also, right? I mean, you could use this for politics and still have the benefit of having a one-to-cast tutor, right?

To summarize, it's a very cheap tutor and I feel like it has potential in cEDH.

Another question. Why isn't Fabricate inside this deck? It's an additional tutor to search for Shimmer Myr or Aetherflux Reservoir if ever you don't them in the big draws, right?

Last question. Why was Aven Mindcensor added to the deck? Won't Ashiok, Dream Render be a better card because it is a planeswalker and would be harder to kill? Or are we looking at it's ability to be casted in instant speed? XD

Let me know what you guys think! Thank you!

Scheming symmetry is pretty bad, setting up opponents is one of the worst things you can do in cedh. It puts the card to top, so it's even more likely for the opponent you set up to use their card first. There are just too many better cards for this to be included in any black deck, IMO.

Fabricate: You usually don't want to waste tutors on artifacts except in fairly fringe cases, unlike other decks whose main wincon is artifacts (Jhoira, etc). With access to black, we have a better tutor suite available than fabricate, tutors need to be really good to justify being 3 mana. As a sorcery speed tutor, it's also not really useful for shimmer lines.

Aven is a blanket inclusion to fight hulk decks and most fast combo/value (alternatively containment priest for hulk, etc, extirpate for gitfrog). It has the great advantage of being played POST flash resolution with the hulk trigger on the stack, meaning you can pass priority on flash, and let other opponents fight over it, saving your own interaction. If flash resolves, you have a creature to flash in and shut off their combo. Creatures are much harder to counter than instants with the common countermagic suite played in cedh. We play very few creatures to protect Narset/Ashiok, so they would die quickly in the current creature heavy meta.

Ohhh.. Okay okay.. I get it. Thanks! (But do you think Scheming Symmetry could go up in price because of the fact that it is a one-to-cast tutor? XD just askin')

I also have some more questions about Shimmer Zur's game strategy.

First, let's say this is my opening hand.. three lands, a mana rock, Demonic tutor, a Spell Pierce, and a brainstorm. A) Do I keep it? B) If I do, what should I search for with Demonic Tutor? Do I go for Doomsday? Search for Angel's Grace or Ad Naus?

Second, I am actually building kind of a budget version of this deck.. so I replaced the expensive mana rock such as grim monolith, chrome mox, mox opal , etc. with everflowing chalice, arcane signet, mind stone. Would that be alright?

Third, what will I use to bring back my artifacts to my hand for additional storm counts now that Hurkyl's Recall is removed?

What do you think about adding a Lab Man + Demonic Consultation combo in this deck as another backup if ever storm won't work?

Would a deck be much better if it has more than two win cons? Or is it a necessity in cedh that a deck should only focus on 1 win con (and a backup plan)?

Consulation is a better version of the deck, and is the recommended version.

I link to it in the description too: Tainted Shimmer Zur

It would seem this hasn't been worked on in a few years. Wondering if someone is working / playing this still? And their thoughts on the newer cards added since 2019
