I think its important to point out with Chun Li the cards you exile with counters are not lost when she dies since they are not tied to her. They will remain in exile with kick counters. And with cards like Swords to Plowshares, Flawless Maneuver, Teferi's Protection, Cyclonic Rift it can get out of hand pretty quick. Also I may be wrong here but since it doesn’t say you may cast it without paying its mana value you are able to cast the exiled spells for alternative costs which opens another avenue for some cards.

I think the other ones have great potential as well the only one that feels boring at face value to me is Ryu but I’m sure there is someone who will come up with something interesting.

The other secret lairs seem to have some fun art so I look forward to the full reveal.

At first I was like, meh, but when I saw multikicker on Chun-Li it made me appreciate this a lot more : ) Looks pretty fun!

I strangely like Dhalsim... Though I am always trying to look with the Marisi, Breaker of the Coil lens for difficult to block/evasion + difficult to remove + card draw on one card.

Zangief's slightly different take on Jund is appreciated.. I am tired of Jund permutations of Korvold, Prossh, or failed attempts at interesting land-recursion... Couple of directions I could see people going with him. I like alot of these abilities judging at face value without editorializing my opinions how "MtG" they feel... This is why I can always look at alters or whatever. Also, Street Fighter doesn't feel quite as "jump the shark" to me for whatever reason.

Street Fighter doesn't mean much to me, and (unrelated to Universes Beyond) I really haven't felt the urge to play Commander in a while, so it's even less likely I see any of them. None of the other Lairs in this superdrop speak to me either.

But I do genuinely hope everyone who likes Street Fighter likes the designs and gets the cards and doesn't get pringled foils.

Really it wasn't the drop that made me feel skeezy as much as seeing a headline to the effect of "THE COMPANY THAT MADE THE $500 DOLLAR CHARIZARD CARD NOW MAKES STREET FIGHTER CARDS," since that whole side of collector frenzy is getting on my nerves.

Gleeock: yeah when I saw Zangief I thought of you =).

And yes, Dhalsim fits pretty well with Marisi. He's basically a cheaper Keeper of Fables with Skulk. (All three of those cards obviously rewards you for getting in hits on multiple opponents.)

I'm struggling to see how or why these are different than The Walking Dead ones that set the community on fire. I mean, they look cool and all, and the use of the untap symbol for Ryu's Hadoken ability is pretty genius, but... aren't these still new, functionally unique cards that are timeboxed and made to demand? Why are these ones met with praise when The Walking Dead Secret Lair was reviled by basically everyone?

Not trying to start some big argument, I'm just legitimately curious.

KBK7101:

  1. The more fantasy-ish flavor of Street Fighter is a less jarring fit for MTG than TWD

  2. WotC promising to make reflavored reprints helps

  3. I'm numbed to SLs at this point

I mean, it's true that this is kind of just another timed window secret lair just like TWD, but at least this one feels like they had fun with the concept and made interesting cards. It still is so lame that they are printing new cards to specifically be expensive, it's just, after TWD and Stranger Things, this feels like a step back to the right(ish) direction. TWD probably caught a lot of flak for being the first one. Now we know that they are going to happen, and I think maybe it's sinking in, and maybe people aren't as outraged. I still feel like this kind of secret lair is an overall negative, but this one feels a little softer, kinda like they washed their hands, moisturized, and then slapped players in the face : )

Yeah, pretty much agree with the explanations. I still won't feed the whale machine... I have in-fact reached a happy point with any deck I play where I don't grease the MtG corporate wheels much at all any more. For most the reasons above this Street Fighter stuff just seems less jarring to me. I feel that this stuff & alt arts are so out of control now that some day soon I will just be able to print a random proxy & only the most die-hard will be able to identify it as not-official MtG anymore :) I could actually picture a bunch of card company mergers happening some day with the current road being travelled. Anyway, I have less of a voice than ever on the direction of the game since I haven't really liked a release or bought a box since Dominaria. It's just cheap pet-singles for me & hoping other players reach the same happy place :)

Giving Chun-Li multikicker was an excellent touch, and I am certain that no one is surprised that Guile is red, white, and blue.

What the other Secret Lair sets revealed in this superdrop? Does anyone have anything to say about those?

Ha, I didn't even notice Guile's colors, that's clever!

DemonDragonJ : There are a few in this set of releases that tempt me but not enough for me to actually buy them. I like the reprints in the Neon Ink one, but I'm not really sold on the frame itself. Introducing: Kaito Shizuki has a cool theme, as I'm really liking his character so far, but I'm not too interested in the cards themselves. Same with the Kamigawa: The Manga : The Cards bundle.

It takes a really strong combination of theme and reprints for me to buy a Secret Lair. The only ones I've purchased so far are one of the constellation Theros gods packs, the Phyrexian language praetors one and the Kamigawa Ink bundle.

Nitpick: I feel like Dhalsim should have been worded so that he just has Reach, Vigilance, and Skulk plus

Other creatures you control with reach have vigilance and skulk.

Gidgetimer says... #16

That is different enough from the ability that Dhalsim has that it has completely different interactions.

Coward_Token says... #17

Gidgetimer: While it sure is functionally different, are there a lot of cases where it matters, especially power-wise? The templating is way more elegant (and more consistent with how this kind of wording is typically templated) , it working with "vigilance matters" cards like Alert Heedbonder & Solid Footing feels more like a feature than a bug, and with the reach criteria in mind, there's not a lot of cards that care about the untap/vigilance distinction (Wake Thrasher, I guess??).

Coward_Token says... #18

(Although I admit that Dhalsim having skulk is flavorfully weird... but I'm also confused why the ability as-is didn't get a flavor word explaining it either.)

February 19, 2022 5:44 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #19

You could still give it vigilance and then use a tap of ability in response to the untap. Same goes for copying the trigger to use a tap ability.

As written the ability interacts with inspired and Mesmeric Orb. Plus a host of other cards that care about creatures becoming tapped or untapped.

I'm not going to put effort into finding 3-4 card interactions with the ability. I was merely noting that, from a rules perspective, what Dhalsim has and the proposed ability are not equivalent.

Gleeock says... #20

Dhalsim reminds me of Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa - 'cept Sidars ability is trying to reflect mystical arial horsemanship prowess, which if you look at it I think it does so well... So I am sure Dhalsim's flexible nature versus more rigid opponents is part of this unusual stretchskulk
