Fun commanders

Commander (EDH) forum

I am wanting to get back into magic and starting that would be building my own commander deck. Please tell me of some fun commanders that are budget friendly,im talking under 60. I was thinking of using Shattergang Brothers and I made a start here https://aetherhub.com/Deck/the-shattergang The next commander that I have found would be Uril, the Miststalker

If you are trying to keep it under $60 you might want to look at mono or two color commanders. Personally I am partial to Xenagos, God of Revels because despite him being 1/5 of your budget by himself, the rest of the cards for a functional deck can be gotten cheaply. You can pour money into him if you like, but you don't have to.

You can probably get Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper for $0.25 at your local shop, and have a dearth of options to mess around with. The card is centered around three core aspects of the game: instants, sorceries, and lands (with an extra layer of “elementals” to boot). There are a berjillion different directions to go with these, and two colors to work with. This is one of my favorite sleeper commanders, and recommend you roll it around in the back of your mind while you make your first pick. Go wide? Go tall? Go wild!

FormOverFunction Quick aside: "Dearth" means "lack" or "shortage". A dearth of options means you don't have any.

umbra-taint Are you going for -centric options, or are Shattergang Brothers and Uril, the Miststalker just the ones that looked most interesting to you? Do you have any preference in color or strategy?

legendofa They just looked interesting to me, Im experimenting with the guy I linked before. FormOverFunction I think I have him and what ways could I build around him. Always looking for new ideas! Thanks to both of you.

On second thought do you have any other underrated commanders?

Selvala, The Explorer Returned is soo much fun! I promise, if you make a deck around whatever you like in colors, and Selvala, The Explorer Returned is your cmdr..? You'll love it.

As for underrated? Multani, Maro-Sorcerer click the link here.

Heartless Hidetsugu is a great choice. To pitch some other ideas, Isshin, Two Heavens as One (not really underrated, but versatile and budget-friendly), Kaervek the Merciless, Astarion, the Decadent, and Riku of Two Reflections (not underrated, but fun and because I'm only suggesting cards so far). You know what you want, though, so no hard feelings if these aren't what you're looking for.

Thanks, might play Riku. I’m really just trying to find a deck that’s fun to play and good for a beginner. I think I made the start of myHeartless Hidetsugu deck public. What do you think of that

umbra-taint says... #13

One thing is that I am worried about the cost of my group slug deck. If Riku would be cheaper i’m probably going to use him.

If you make your deck public, and ask for feedback, you should get some responses. You can also look for ideas by searching for Heartless Hidetsugu on this site and on edhrec.com, which is very popular.

For 60$ I would either look into buying precon and add few upgrades or give a chance for Pauper EDH where sleeves cost more than deck itself.

March 13, 2023 12:01 p.m.

legendofa - much appreciated! I’d be careful sticking a new player with Heartless, as that will draw a lot of hate to that player. That Roilshaper Commander is sort of simple and straightforward enough that opponents won’t freak out on them. It also gives lots of opportunities to learn instant/sorcery interactions, creature combat, etc. With those opportunities you’ll have a good chance of getting the new player onboard successfully.

FormOverFunction Im not a new player, havent played EDH and want to get into it. I know most rules and understand alot of things in magic. Could you link a budget Noyan Dar deck? Also d you have any other commaners that a player like me could use well?

Also I started standard and modern for my first and second formats.

Crow_Umbra says... #20

I'd recommend starting off with a mono or 2 color deck, since a big chunk of a deck's cost can come from fixing the mana base.

If you want to try out mono-color, I would suggest checking out Saryth, the Viper's Fang. I have a deck for her that I rarely play myself, but usually lend out to newer players or friends that forget their stuff.

She is super straightforward and open ended enough to play whatever Green stuff you want. She synergizes quite nicely with some pretty cheap cards like Scattershot Archer.

March 13, 2023 1:39 p.m.

umbra-taint I’m sorry, I totally misunderstood that. I don’t have any of my kids’ decks on here, so I don’t have a good link to share. Basically for blue we stacked up card draw, scry, hexproof instants and sorceries. For white we pulled together instant speed indestructible, 1/1 soldier creation, and combat tricks. I stopped short of getting any deeper than that. Now that I know more, though, I’m thinking this might not be as perfect a fit... seeing as how you already know the difference between a sorcery and an instant ;p

umbra-taint says... #22

Crow-Umbra Thanks, might try her, what do you think a good Saryth, the Viper's Fang would cost? Also what strategies should I use with her?

March 13, 2023 1:48 p.m.

umbra-taint says... #23

FormOverFunction Yeah I have played magic for around a year in total, like I said MTGA player and modern in my playgroup, I didnt play then they started commander so I want to get a good deck to paly with them

March 13, 2023 1:50 p.m.

Crow_Umbra says... #24

umbra-taint - For Saryth, the Viper's Fang you could do a Big Green Stompy build and play any Green cards that you think might be fun. Bonus points if the creatures have Trample, since they will be granted Death Touch while attacking due to Saryth's first line of rules text.

Because of this, the creature will kill anything blocking it, and the excess damage will then completely trample over to your opponent.

If you want, I can link my Saryth deck. Mine is way over the $60 budget you have in mind, but she can honestly be built on a super cheap budget. Just add in your favorite big green creatures, and some mana dorks like Fyndhorn Elves for ramp.

You can also use fight/bite spells like Savage Punch or Bite Down, targeting one of your tapped creatures to for sure kill whatever creature it fights/bites.

March 13, 2023 1:53 p.m.

That’s awesome - welcome aboard! Another commander used in my household is Syr Faren, the Hengehammer which is also extremely straightforward. That Card will be inexpensive enough that you might end up having trouble finding it lol. If you enjoy stompy green you should check out my Skull Island / King Kong deck. Fun stuff in there.

Crow-Umbra Please link your deck, I think im going to do Saryth, the Viper's Fang seems cool and I kinda like green. Another plus is that I have her already.

Crow_Umbra says... #27

No prob umbra-taint! Here is my Saryth deck My Viper Don't Want None Unless You've Got-. The deck is currently about $500, but definitely ignore and exclude all of the expensive pieces.

I would say you can focus on using cards like Bite Down and Savage Punch, and any other favorite Green cards that fit your budget. Saryth's abilities certainly can make a board fairly resilient if she isn't removed.

I think I'd look for a Commander that comes with some card draw stapled to it in some way if you are starting out and want to limit budget, but one that also avoids undue attention. Good card draw tends to be very $$$, but stuff like Sygg, River Cutthroat can draw lots of cards even if people are just swinging regularly, the Commander rewards you for people losing life, a thing that happens as a matter of course. Dimir is really good at drawing cards, creature removal, and Blue is full of spells that can save your butt very easily, it's not just about casting a Counterspell, sometimes you want Aetherspouts. Blue can solve almost any problem (in theory), and do it at instant speed, I know when I was a new Commander player it bothered me quite a bit if I lost to a deck because I couldn't deal with some vulnerable lynchpin in their strategy, much more so if I don't run anything that solves it (and thus will always lose in that situation). Blue avoids that feeling better than any colour I'd argue, but it's also the hardest colour to play 'optimally'. The biggest weakness of Dimir is that your creatures tend to be smaller weenies or utility dorks, so you can't just go taller than a Gruul or Naya deck, especially on a budget, if you have an inner Timmy (a player who likes big, splashy cards to excess) Green is probably more your speed. Green also has lots of card draw, and has stupid cards like Squallmonger that are pretty budget, give that Deathtouch or Lifelink and you're in incredibly good shape, but what if you throw a Keen Sense or Snake Umbra on it? 2 mana and 1 life for 3 cards isn't bad for a budget deck, having something that'll clear out flying weenies can be priceless in Green.

I love Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician Goblin Tribal. He is very different and uses a lot of older cards that are not used in too many other places. There are also some more expensive cards that can fit into the deck -- so that it can be upgraded over time. But those cards are not needed for the deck to function.

umbra-taint says... #33

Can you link a list, Im buying a golem tribal that I made but maybe down the line could buy the Goblin Deck. Thanks for the suggestion!

March 16, 2023 7:53 p.m.

Here is my Ib Halfheart List . It isn't super budget -- but it gives you a decent idea. Many of the more expensive cards can be subbed for other cards that are much cheaper.
