Fascinating Cards from New Capenna

Commander (EDH) forum

Hi everyone! I opened a New Capenna set booster the other day, and there are some really interesting cards for commander. There are lots of niche cards like Boxing Ring that could be really great in certain decks. I think the shield counter mechanic is also cool, and reminds me of Palliation Accord from the Dissension block. While my main interest has been building a Giada, Font of Hope deck, I think I overlooked some other cool stuff. What are some favorite cards that all of you are looking forward to in the new set!

i think Slip Out the Back is an interesting card.... have a Voltron creature survive a Supreme Verdict effect and keep its enchantments and such?

Structural Assault - If your deck runs alot of treasures as just a powerful ramp piece (& you mostly don't run artifacts otherwise) this is a pretty nifty boardwipe. You can potentially just pump your treasures into it to make some interesting damage swings & I think players are kindof thinking more about destroying opponents stuff instead of how interesting it is when you are spending your own treasures into it.

Stimulus Package & Prosperous Partnership because limited "save-for-later"/rebate ramp on an enchantment is a much more powerful effect than people think... You've basically cast a Skyshroud Claim for a 1 time use on that stim-pckg, which is often all you need to get rolling. Prosperous partnership is really powerful when you are just beginning a token-engine & you don't have any benefits to attacking yet... Now you've just made your tokens into less efficient dorks, but at the same time they are dorks that care less about creature-based boardwipes.

I like the return of hideaway, hideaway is a mechanic that can incidentally put your deck over-the-top & should see more use once this commander product rolls around

Gleeock That is a cool card! In the right deck its a dual board wipe in even a mono-red deck, and you can always sac the treasures you don't need to kill all creatures to pay for the spell, saving mana for other things during your turn. Cool find!

I like that combo as well, and especially like Prosperous Partnership because it is great ramp in a Boros token deck where ramp isn't plentiful but the cards are. It could also work in equipment aggro decks like Akiri, Fearless Voyager, and is really cool.

Icbrgr That is also a good card because of the versatility. You can save your stuff, but also can use it to phase out the Blightsteel Colossus they surprised you with and save yourself. It doubles as protection and removal, which is cool. And at one mana its hard to get more efficient.

Ognis, the Dragon's Lash is the first time we had a cmdr who cares about haste. So that's cool.

Rumor Gatherer is good card draw in white. I'm hyped to see card draw in white.

Glittering Stockpile is pretty unique we haven't seen a mana rock that turns into a ritual later.

Luxior, Giada's Gift is probably the most unique card from this main set.

Angel of Suffering is pretty unique as well. There's only a few cards I can think of that are a lil like this. Platinum Angel and Platinum Emperion. Pairing Angel of Suffering with Wheel of Sun and Moon creates the dream sceneiro for Syr Konrad, the Grim.

Leaving the main set and moving to the cmdr set

Tivit, Seller of Secrets is the first time we got a cmdr that cares about voting and that's awesome.

The Beamtown Bullies seems like a legit cmdr that does something like we've never seen before and make you want to put cards in your deck that you wouldn't want in any other deck. Cards like Eater of Days lol

Mari, the Killing Quill is the first cmdr that cares about assassins. That's freaking cool

Syrix, Carrier of the Flame is clearly made for Phoenix tribes and its sweet

Bennie Bracks, Zoologist more sweet mono white card draw. Yes more cards like this please.

Smuggler's Share same as above but also ramp. Soo good.

Resourceful Defense wins the cmdr set for the most unique card from this set. We've never had a card printed that can move counters of any kind around at instant speed and stick around to do it again whenever you want. So good so Broken and so unique.

And to finish this off. More white card draw.

griffstick I am impressed and heartened by the sheer amount of white card draw, and am finally building a mono-white deck again for that reason! I had been saying for years to make white card draw based off of stuff white already does like drawing cards, making tokens, playing weenie creatures, gaining life, giving stuff to everyone, or playing enchantments. It seems that they are finally listening!

Smuggler's Share is in-line with what I was previously saying would be the right way to go about ramp or draw... Which is the "share with the class" or parity mentality... but applied on a scaling card.

griffstick, Wheel of Sun and Moon never lets the cards hit the graveyard, which stops Syr Konrad, the Grim from triggering.

Additionally, Resourceful Defense is awesome. We could already move counters on creatures around as much as we liked with Leech Bonder and something like Paradise Mantle, but one card to cover all permanent types is incredible.

1empyrean, forget Syr Konrad, the Grim it's still cool

Plus that card is in 440 decks 0% of 560901 decks according to edh rec.

griffstick: Indeed. I really like the self mill aspect of Angel of Suffering, but imagine those 2 in a Tayam, Luminous Enigma deck.

Tayam, Luminous Enigma is one of those cmdr decks I've wanted to build for quite a while but never did. I imagine the Angel of Suffering feeling alot like massive card draw in that deck

Rain of Riches and Professional Face-Breaker both look like a lot of fun to me. I like how Rain of Riches works with Galazeth Prismari and Glittering Stockpile.

Wow! Professional Face-Breaker is some real ramp in red! I might need to put that into my Trynn and Silvar humans deck. Its nice that it can be card draw as well.

Pretty hyped for Determined Iteration for Feldon commander decks. Pretty excited for Illicit Shipment and Body Count as well.

Bootleggers' Stash is kind of stupid, though...

Determined Iteration is also great for Ghired, Conclave Exile. I'll have to tell my friend who plays him!

I've decided to add Next of Kin to my Tayam deck. It seems like a nice addition to my suite of obnoxious pillowfort cards.

1empyrean That card seems potenially pretty powerful! Its like a combination of Birthing Pod and Diabolic Servitude. Taiyam does seem like a good place for it.

Guerric: It's more like Pattern of Rebirth and Gift of Immortality got combined, but yeah.

May 1, 2022 3:37 p.m.

Guerric says... #23

1empyrean True! Pattern of Rebirth was the first thing I thought of, but then I thought that the recurrable nature of it might play into some Pod-like lines of play in a dec wity good sac-outlets. I haven't thought that through though, but it seems promising.
