now that Oko, Thief of Crowns is banned in almost every format I've been thinking about other cards that were basically design mistakes and ended up being way too powerful to be legal in any format. I'm curious to see what some of your favorite broken cards are.

Definitely not EDH, but I think my two favorite broken cards are Skullclamp and Necropotence. Those two cards are so busted it's insane. The best part about skullclamp is its history around it too.

Sol Ring lol. Skullclamp.

If you want broken cards just look to the cmdr precon cmdr's.

But the one that comes to mind immediately isn't a cmdr precon cmdr. Narset, Enlightened Master. You really dont need to try hard to make this one busted.

Animar, Soul of Elements is another one that comes to mind. Pretty easy to build around it's one cause its busted.

But all the tutors busted in cmdr. This singleton format was designed without tutors in mind.

Consecrated Sphinx and Rhystic Study and anything else that escalates with the more players there are.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say Contamination. I know its not banned in any format, but if it were legal in Modern or Standard I definitely think it would get the ban-hammer. And yes, I know that can be said for lots of other legacy cards, but Contamination is probably the most playgroup banned EDH card I have seen so far. While mana rocks have improved a lot like the expansion of talismans, Arcane Signet, and Arcum's Astrolabe, the card Contamination can still be as harsh as Iona, Shield of Emeria against mono-color EDH decks. And think about it, in practically all 60 card formats this card is effectively a lock your opponent out of the game for three mana card. While it wasn’t nearly as busted when it first came out we’ve had cards like Bitterblossom, Reassembling Skeleton, Bloodghast, and Dreadhorde Invasion get printed which has made its drawback laughable. While I’m all for good two card combos, this one just drags out the game instead of auto-winning, and its incredibly easy to pull off the lock by turn 3 without ramp. My argument is this is a card that is just cruel and its busted just like these other cards, especially the fact it can corrupt your mana to the point you can’t even cast your enchantment removal cards anymore. That’s just top grade evil that cards like Blood Moon and Back to Basics can’t even compete with and those cards are hated enough as it is.

I'm gonna talk about the opposite and bring up Sylvan Primordial the card looks innocent I dont think it ever saw play outside of standard. But yet it can easily break games in edh

I don't keep track of bannings outside of EDH and I barely pay attention to those... I think Aetherworks Marvel got banned at one point? I definitely love playing that card. Just insane value off of it in the right kind of deck. Shadowborn Apostle was where I had it for a long time. Now it is in my recently built Ayara, First of Locthwain aristocrats. Similar deck design but less janky.

I absolutely love Recurring Nightmare, however I’ll never play it, because it's broken as hell.
