I've always wanted to build a deck around Voracious Wurm. Headers13's The Exponential Wurm Of Life seemed to be that deck, but the more I've played with it, the more I dislike it. It's slow, is the unfortunate fact: it doesn't start until Turn 4 or 5, and until then it has to be content with stalling using an empty board and as many copies of Heroes' Reunion as you can get your hands on. Headers13 acknowledges this fact, attributing it to his strict budgeting decisions; and don't get me wrong, he has crafted an excellent deck which I recommend. But I think one could build something that emphasizes tempo a little more.
My version of the deck smooths the early turns with more board presence. Hopeful Eidolon and Fleecemane Lion serve as early-turn roots that can be Voltron'd (that's a verb, right?) into something big, and in the meanwhile I at least have chump-blockers. The main enablers are still Rhox Faithmender and, to a lesser extent, Wall of Reverence, so it still takes until Turn 4 to really get going, but at least I've got something to work with at that time. After that, the deck plays as you'd expect: exploit Predator's Rapport and Heroes' Reunion to power down your first Voracious Wurm and go to town.
The biggest problem I'm having is that this is essentially three half-decks pasted together. Wall of Reverence is an enabler for Ajani's Pridemate, Ageless Entity and Light of Promise / Sunbond. Getting a big Voracious Wurm down early has its own needs, which have been discussed above. And then finally there's the Voltron bases which essentially sub in for the Pridemate and Entity, have the downside of needing their own enablers, and have the upside of providing other value. Keeping the deck size down has been problematic. While I don't precisely agree with some of the choices Headers13 made, I'm getting a much better understanding of why he made them, and why they are a right answer even if they are not the right answer I'm looking for.
What would be really fun is if I could include Archangel of Thune. Over in Eternal Card Game, a digital game with several Magic pros on the design team, I have a deck built around "Katra, The Devoted" (the Archangel for , 3/3, and without the other keywords), and this is essentially my attempt to convert that deck into this game. Alas, Katra is much more realistically priced.
