SCG Open Richmond —Nov. 23, 2014

I went 0-4 with the deck before dropping, but I'm not abandoning the deck. All of my games were close, and some just came down to draws being better/worse one way or another. I sat down and have retooled the deck a bit, deciding to place Crippling Chill in the main board in the place where Weave Fate used to be. This is because it is a powerful effect that buys me time to get better answers and also cantrips, both of which are ideal options for the current configuration of the deck. The two slots that are currently Turn to Frog are up for grabs, and I'm deciding what to put there. I don't think running mainboard Negate there is the right choice, though I might go back to that.

Nice deck, seems clunky though, but control mill decks always do. Would you give you your 2 cents on my deck

TheNinjaJesus -- I've done some heavy updating now, creature do seem (sadly) necessary.

Yeah, for now, it seems, creatureless control is somewhat of a pipe dream. One of my fellow players at a LGS and I discussed the relative merits of such a build, and the general consensus is that such a build loses so much mitigation of damage and has so few ways to counteract the life loss that does happen, you're always working at a disadvantage. The best build we cooked up was a mono green shell with Nykthos, Voyaging Satyrs, Arbor Colossi, Karametra's Acolytes, Hornet Queen and Nest (one apiece), Life's Legacy, Three counter spells, two kill spells, one Kruphix, and 4 Villainous Wealth, and the goal is to fire Wealth for 20 to 30 mana.

Jeskai Ascendancy may not be long for this world, but you may need to have answers for some of the key cards. Unravel the Aether , Naturalize , Annul , Swan Song , etc.

I feel as if you have too many CIPT lands. Llanowar Wastes , Yavimaya Coast if you're trying to keep it from getting too expensive with fetches. And Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth . So, less temples for important turn 3 plays, either on your turn or theirs.

I know it's 2cmc more, but with the long game in mind and 25 lands you may want to consider Prophet of Kruphix instead of Horizon Chimera . Being able to flash in a Sagu Mauler would be hilarious, not to mention always having untapped mana available for the 8 counter spells you have in the deck.

just my 2 cents.

I like the deck too so +1

Be careful with Dictate of Kruphix -- it's Turbo effect draws your opponent into answers as readily as it does you. Maybe play some hand destruction to counteract that?

Whelming Wave vs AEtherspouts ?Aether may be one more, but it seems a far better answer.

CharlesMandore the reasoning is that AEtherspouts only work on things they're attacking with, while the wave gets everything.

You know, if you're running black, you need to run the poop out of Murderous Cut . Its the most broken card out of the most recent set right now for removal.

Courser of Kruphix will also help you speed up your game, avoiding land draws where possible, and you should also run more fetch lands like Polluted Delta or even Evolving Wilds . They will not only fix your mana base... but also stow cards into your graveyard for delve.
