Pro Tour SOI - Comments Reset Here —April 26, 2016

Pro Tour Shadows Over Innistrad has come and gone leaving behind a very exiting changing Standard format. The Pros brought great innovation which will completely change the landscape of Standard. The top 8 had eight different archetypes represented which is incredible for the Pro Tour. Coming into this Pro Tour I expected White/X Humans and Bant Company to dominate, making watching a complete bore, but this wasn't the case at all. In fact, not one W/X Humans deck even made top 8!

The most exciting deck from this deck's perspective at the Pro Tour was Channel Fireball's G/B Aristocrats deck which LSV himself piloted to a top 8 finish. LSV's deck plays very much like this deck, filling the battlefield with low casting cost green and black creatures with Cryptolith Rite, Collected Company and sacrificing those creatures for profit. The difference between this deck and his deck is he's using an array of different creatures while this deck is using Elves.

Here is LSV's deck tech

Here are his matches at the Pro Tour:

  1. [Quarterfinals Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bKTuIDOGWI) Vs Esper Dragons.
  2. [Round 16 Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6YU9De92ug) Vs White Humans
  3. [Round 13 Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz3JVKK89DA) Vs GW Tokens
  4. [Round 8 Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C4uOb8nOrk) Vs Bant Company
  5. [Round 7 Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjDPhbUsJcA) Vs Abzan Company

Before the Pro Tour there were already decks just like this one that are using Cryptolith Rite and Westvale Abbey  Flip, but the biggest innovation that LSV brought was including the combination of Zulaport Cutthroat with Nantuko Husk. This combo is not new because 4-Color Rally used it before the current rotation, but what is new is combining this combo with Rite and Abbey. Cutthroat has great interaction with Abbey because you must sacrifice creatures to activate it. Depending on how many Cutthroats are on the battlefield when you want to start sacrificing can drain your opponent for 5-10+ life before Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip is even activated. Cutthroat and Abbey can hugely swing a game in your favor.

LSV's deck is different than this deck because he was only using one Elf, Elvish Visionary, but both decks are using the same strategy of filling the battlefield with 2 drops and using Rite, Company and Abbey to gain advantage in a game. The creature cores are very different. LSV is using Blisterpod, Catacomb Sifter, Cutthroat and Husk, no tribal synergies. Where as this deck is using Elves with Shaman of the Pack. Both are using the card advantage engines of Rite, Company and Duskwatch Recruiter  Flip.

What does all this mean for this deck? Due to the excellent synergy Cutthroat has with Abbey I have now added 4x Cutthroat. I'm keeping the Elf creature core and still using Shaman. I've also increased to 4x Duskwatch because of it's great interaction with a Rite in play as well as finding both Shaman and Cutthroat. To make room for these additions I have moved 3x Ultimate Price to the sideboard. Nantuko Husk is not being added for now because honestly I haven't playtested with him enough to see if he is needed using Elves, also there is currently no room for him main deck. Husk also takes this deck farther away from being an Elf deck with tribal synergies. Which after all because of Elves is why we play this deck.

Pro Tour SOI was very fun to watch, this is the first time in a long time that I have wanted to watch all the Standard matches that are covered in each round. LSV brought an exciting Golgari Aristocrats deck that is very similar to this deck. Using knowledge gained from watching LSV's matches I have made some big chances to Rite Elves. Adapting the excellent interaction of Cutthroat and Abbey with Elves.

Interesting changes you made there - follows the flow of current torrents in standard. Would you still consider this Recruiter for Collected-less version on Messengers?

Randsome, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I have now updated Budget Rite Elves adding Duskwatch Recruiter  Flip.

Duskwatch is good in the budget version using Sylvan Messenger instead of Collected Company because he can find Messenger. Is he as good in the budget version as this version, no because the budget version can't really take advantage of playing the game at instant speed because it's not using Collected Company and Westvale Abbey  Flip. Duskwatch is still excellent with Cryptolith Rite which the budget version is using.

Both Gnarlroot Trapper and Beastcaller Savant are better in the budget version than this version because they both can be used to cast Messenger. Still cutting them in favor of Duskwatch because he has more impact, but I could see it being fine leaving 4x of one of them in place of Duskwatch and 2x Forest.

Hmm not really sure about taking out the mana elves. Yes I know with the Cryptolith Rite you can get the mana from your other elves but doing that decreases the elves for Shaman of the Pack. Another thing is that with Nissa, Voice of Zendikar you could always neg 2 for +1/+1 on the elves. Also I don'y see why you wouldn't mind sacing them later on for Westvale Abbey  Flip if they have no use later in the game. Also since Beastcaller Savant has haste it allows you tap it right away which can be very useful when you have 3mana and two 2mana cost cards in hand. Lastly since it has haste you can still swing with it if need be (Nissa can always make it +1+1)

I personally dont like the Duskwatch Recruiter  Flip since I feel it can be somewhat hard to flip and isn't an elf so Shaman of the Pack cant deal that extra bit of damage.

Moomoomooo, you made some good points about the mana Elves. I'm sorry to see them go for now. Have you played this deck vs both Humans and Bant Company? The mana Elves are just bad in those matchups. I was constantly sideboarding them out. They are the two most played decks right now so it just makes sense to cut the cards that are under performing vs them for cards that help in the matchups. If and when Standard meta shifts and changes then the mana Elves can be revisited.

If you are having reservations about not using more mana Elves just move Ultimate Price back to the sideboard for 4x of one of them. I currently like having Price main deck for game 1 vs both Humans and Bant Company, especially Humans.

You are right both Trapper and Savant are fine sac fodder for Abbey if you draw an Abbey. Drawing a bunch of Trappers and Savants and not drawing an Abbey is not good. Using both Trapper and Savant really requires you to draw either an Abbey or a Shaman without them the mana dorks are not good enough. Finding either Trapper or Savant or both from a Company is not good either. Too many times this would happen when using them. Getting a turn 3 Company using Gilder and then finding only mana Elves from that Company, not good.

Cutting the mana Elves does reduce the amount of Elves in this deck as well as damage Shaman can do, but some sacrifices need to be made to use better cards. I don't feel that the amount of damage that Shaman can do is reduced enough to warrant using them. All the other 2 drop Elves this deck is using have much better impact in a game.

I don't think Nissa, Voice of Zendikar is good right now either. She is still in the sideboard because she is good in Control matchups if one comes up. Other than putting counters on Advocate, Shaman, Quagmire or Ormendahl she just doesn't make Elves big enough to make an impact. What is a 2/2 Trapper or Savant going to do, really?

This deck is not using Duskwatch because I want to flip him. His flip side is a nice bonus, but his Human side is the reason he's being used. Using a small number other creatures that aren't Elves is fine if they have great interaction with Company which Duskwatch does. Don't knock Duskwatch down so fast, test him out and I think you will be very surprised at how well he strengthens the many strategies in this deck.

Duskwatch Recruiter  Flip is interesting. My first playtest of your deck went Turn 2 Recruiter, Turn 3, use his ability, he flips, Turn 4 play Sylvan Advocate, Dwynen's Elite, and Cryptolith Rite, Recruiter flips back, Turn 5, Elvish Visionary, draw Westvale Abbey  Flip, Recruiter ability gets another Elvish Visionary, tap two creatures to play it. Turn 6 Ormendahl, Profane Prince and a 4/5 Sylvan Advocate attacking is not bad at all. I'm sure they were waiting to Languish until I had a few more creatures out...

As I mentioned before, I like Might of the Masses. It works to sneak damage in or as removal of a bigger blocker. I'd like to have one more win con in this deck. In combination with Ultimate Price on the turn before Ormendahl perhaps?

As I keep commenting, it only seems fair that I let you point out all the flaws in Elvish Flameshadows, my Jund version, which I'm playing regularly and is always a work in progress. Don't feel obligated though.

CloudThumper, those are very exciting lines of play and perfectly illustrates the power of Duskwatch Recruiter  Flip with Elves and Rite, thanks.

Might of the Masses is a good card, but only in a very good board state position with a lot of Elves on the battlefield. I can see scenarios where it could be a huge blowout/ game winning play targeting an Elf that isn't blocked and others where it's a dead card, such as drawing one after a board wipe or after sacing Elves to Abbey. It also has the possibility of getting you 2 for 1 if the Elf you target with it gets killed in response. It's these situations where it can be a possible dead card that make me hesitant to use it.

Channel Fireball, more importantly LSV, is playing a B/G Aristocrats deck at Pro Tour SOI. His deck is showcasing the power of Cryptolith Rite and Westvale Abbey  Flip! Not just with Elves, but with other black and green creatures. The insane tech he is using is Zulaport Cutthroat and Nantuko Husk. Cutthroat with Westvale Abbey  Flip is brilliant draining your opponent for 5 damage as you activate Abbey is just great. Not to mention that he is also using Duskwatch Recruiter  Flip.

LSV is currently 8-0 at the Pro Tour and was featured in 2 rounds back-to-back, round 7 and 8. His deck can be extremely explosive!

Round 7 Here. His entire match is the first 15 minutes, haha.

Round 8 Here. His match is the first 30 minutes. Duskwatch makes an appearance with Rite in game 2.

With how good Cutthroat is turning out to be with the Rite and Abbey strategy I'm going to try to incorporate him into this deck. I can't wait to see a full decklist and/or a deck tech tomorrow on LSV's deck.

I will now check out your deck. How has a Jund manabase been working for you?

Excellent! My first Rally Elves deck had Zulaport Cutthroat as a major player too, with Rally the Ancestors and Nantuko Husk. Foul-Tongue Shriek was useful there, adding damage and life gain with sacrifice as necessary. That isn't going to work with Westvale Abbey  Flip. Looking forward to see how LSV does. I better order another Abbey...

The Jund mana is mostly fine, but Flameshadow Conjuring needs more red mana on a regular basis, so that's a unique requirement. It is fun deck, and meant to be a surprise in a Meta that is all over the place with very good and creative players. Consistency not being my highest priority. Gotta go to FNM now...

I guess in the format I play i'm currently fine since I dont really play all the much standard currently so I guess since you are able to play a lot of standard while I get to play it 3-4 times a month. Also if I do end up playing standard I typically vs someone who doesnt have all the cards for the deck and/or just dont have good standard decks.

Once I get to play some standard more frequently I can see why you would make the changes that you did.

Also ive been trying to get my damn hands on Collected Company lol. I did trade a Westvale Abbey  Flip for it one which is amazing since Abbey went down in cost by half.
