FormOverFunction The rules for Pauper is that if it's ever been printed at common, and it's not on the ban list, you can use it, and the only way to stop you from using it is banning it.

For your suggestion, let's look at one of my personal favorite bits of jank support, Faithless Looting. All of its prints are common, with four exceptions. One of those is an online-only event reward, two of them are Strixhaven Mythical Archives, and the last one is Secret Lair. None of these use(d) the common rarity, so it's never been upgraded in rarity on power level alone, only as a promotional piece. So it wouldn't be illegal because it's too powerful, it would be illegal because it has a unique and recognizable effect.

Don't get me wrong, brewing with jank is great, and I think a true commons-only format would be interesting to try. But interesting and useful cards tend to get promotional prints outside of common, so the meta would be inherently unstable. I can imagine WotC hypothetically making a tongue-in-cheek Secret Lair with a bunch of Pauper key cards like Writhing Chrysalis, calling it Pauper Power or something and giving them all the gold stamp. Suddenly, a bunch of cards become illegal because of a promotional gag. (It actually took me several tries to find a Pauper meta card that didn't have a higher-than-common print somewhere. They do love their fancy alternates.)

If I throw this comment down the slippery slope into the pits of worst-case scenario, nobody's going to get excited about blocking a Zombie Goliath with a Fortified Rampart.

Hi jonjonhholt,

Thanks for the suggestions! Pinnacle Kill-Ship is very interesting because it can be dug for using Ancient Stirrings and Malevolent Rumble while also eventually becoming a threat. What would you suggest cutting to make room? If it is interaction I would lean towards Breath Weapon as I have Rolling Thunder for that role in a pinch, if I were to cut a threat it would be between Avenging Hunter and Writhing Chrysalis. That being said I do like both those threats in the deck.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

i love the concept for this deck! Seems like a fun alternative to things like Cleansing Wildfire-esc strategies. The only things that stand out to me is that i think running either Generous Ent or Oliphaunt instead of Sagu Wildling is probably worthwhile. Also a couple other cards that came to mind were Malevolent Rumble as it helps dig for bounce lands or a threat. As well as Bannerhide Krushok as it can either reinforce as a nice little instant speed buff turning Arboreal Grazer or Coiling Oracle into an actual creature or krushok can be your 4-drop if you dont draw Writhing Chrysalis. Then once you've ramped a bunch you can scavenge the krushok to turn anything into an immediate threat. But seriously dope list love the idea

You know Icbrgr I don't think I've ever played against Scythe Tiger in pauper nor have I considered running it myself. It's certainly on brand for the deck, the shroud is really nice. I think one problem would be that it's already a low-land count deck and effects like Brave the Wilds already use up lands so to speak. The more I think about it the more losing a land seems really rough in a format where the majority of strats are trying to drop a Writhing Chrysalis or Pactdoll Terror asap and your tiger won't manage to get more than a couple swings in...

Idk, basically Grief rotated out with the new MH, so it was a 'safe' ban money-wise for WotC... Nadu was almost an emergency ban. I think if we give it another banwindow or two, Bowmasters and/or Ring might still get hammered.

The real question is, why no Writhing Chrysalis ban in Pauper?
