Alright, let me try to explain the stupidity that I have going with my 2 AM homebrew. Fair warning, this list will change as more cards with Embalm are spoiled. Depending on what we get, this could change drastically. Even the colors arent set in stone.
The basic idea is to try to take the game long. With ways to gain life and the longevity that the Embalm mechanic (Along with the new Liliana) can give to our creatures, we wanna wear down the opponent until they dont have much left to throw at us, start embalming our creatures, and run them over with mummies. Ideally Angel Mummies. That being said, we arent opposed at all to sneaking in some damage along the way. If we can run them over earlier, we do it.
On the low end of the curve we have
Cryptbreaker
and Sacred Cat.The cat is a simple 1/1 lifelink for one that can embalm for one. Not flashy, but it fills a good role as a one drop. Cryptbreaker should do a lot more. Got an angel we arent even close to using? Pitch it and make a 2/2 zombie. Dont worry, we'll get him back later. Breaker has the added bonus of letting us get some draw power later on if we need an extra card or two at the end of our opponents turn.
the 2 mana slot gives us Anointer Priest and
Trueheart Duelist
. Both of these guys are cards I really like. The deck has potential to make a good number of tokens, and the lifegain from the priest helps us toward our plan of drawing out the game, while Duelist can block bultiple creatures if need be, while serving as a embalmable bear on it's own. For spells we have Grasp of Darkness, which was the best mainboardable 2 mana removal spell I could think of
3 mana slot is.... Anguished Unmaking and... well that's it. I havent found any good creatures here yet. We've only gotten one three drop embalm creature and it's underwhelming to say the least. I dont have the budget to add in Liliana, the Last Hope, or likely even Gideon of the Trials, though I think Gideon would fit in here well as a two-of. Hopefully the rest of the set gives us something
4 mana gives us some real fun. Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet can make zombies, eat our mummies, and potentially be a win con for us. Gisela, the Broken Blade is here more as a filler card until we see a 4-drop embalmer or just something better to fill the spot, but she's a perfectly good card in her own right. 4/3 flying lifelink for 4 is nothing to scoff at. Yahenni's Expertise can wipe the board potentially, and let us cheat out something else, whether it be more removal to kill something big with Grasp, one of our cheaper creatures, or even a Gideon if I cave and add him to the list.
5 Mana gives us Angel of Sanctions (represented here by Serra Angel to keep the curve accurate), and Liliana, Death's Majesty. Angel of Sanctions is basically 4 Oblivion Ring that we can break, as well as being a fairly decent flyer. Liliana synergizes wonderfully with everything we wanna do. Load our graveyard with emablm creatures to make a zombie token? Cool. Reanimate and angel without needing to use Embalm? Sweet. Wipe the board of everything but our zombie tokens and mummies? Yaaaaaaay.
Well hopefully I at least somewhat explained why I run what.
