Trying to get back into Standard

Standard Deck Help forum

Hello!

I originally started playing casually for about 3 years starting with RTR block. I dipped my toes into standard at one point, but my favorite RTR cards rotated out as soon as I did. I've tried a few times after, but never was really satisfied. So with Return to Return to Ravnica coming out, I'd love to try and do a budget standard deck. I love all color combos and would love to hear what you all think are some good budget decks.

Thanks!

Edit: I've also been watching a lot of StrictlyBetterMTG, and I think I wanna do something along the lines of a midrange value deck. Any thoughts?

Hey,

If i would give any advice on getting back into standard it would be to look at whats being played, mtgtop8 has always been useful to me. StrictlybetterMTG has been doing quite a few budget decks lately and if you live in the U.S buying those decks are super quick through TCGplayer. Just note most budget decks will be a lot less versatile, while they might do really well in some match-ups they're usually lackluster in anything else. Midrange decks are usually going to start pushing you for price, the cheapest decks are often aggro.

If you're worried about costs Magic Online can be a cheap alternative, but its not appealing for everyone.

If you're not sure about a deck I always find it really helpful to play-test it against a bunch of other decks people post on here.

Hey, Guilds of Ravnica is coming up and Standard rotation happens at the same time when the set is released. My first suggestion is to wait a month to get back into Standard because at this time we will know all the cards that are in Guilds of Ravnica. If you don't want to wait, my second suggestion depends on what your budget is for a deck... Currently two good decks for ~$100 for post rotation are Mono Green Midrange and Mono Red Goblins.

Mono Green Midrange ($100): Llanowar Elves, Steel Leaf Champion, Vine Mare, Thorn Lieutenant, Thrashing Brontodon, Ghalta, Primal Hunger, Vivien Reid.

Mono Red Goblins (less than $100): Skirk Prospector, Goblin Instigator, Dark-Dweller Oracle, Goblin Chainwhirler, new GRN Legion Warboss, Goblin Trashmaster, Siege-Gang Commander, Lightning Strike, Shock, Banefire.

$100 may even be out of your budget range, but Mono Green Midrange for instance is a fine deck now in current Standard, with big potential post rotation. Other than Blossoming Defense, Rhonas the Indomitable and some sideboard cards it loses very little at rotation. Goblins other than Chainwhirler are not a deck in current Standard, but post rotation Mono Red Aggro as it is now will die, and change into something else. Goblins for post rotation are a deck that can play Chainwhirler, this alone gives the tribe potential.

My two budget deck suggestions are mono colored, this helps a lot with the budget. A large amount of cost for any Standard deck that's not mono colored is the manabase. Shock lands for post rotation and Check lands now currently and for post rotation are not budget lands because you need 4x of each of them in a deck which is expensive. I expect a good two color post rotation manabase to cost $40-50.

If I were you I would wait until all the cards for Guilds of Ravnica have been spoiled and then look at what decks are being touted as viable by the usual suspects on YouTube, SCG, mtgtop8, etc.

At this stage it's too early to make deck suggestions as the format will be completely shaken up after rotation in a couple of weeks.

@Argy

Is it too soon to brew now you think? I'm itching to brew and looking at the Dimir guild looks sick. Surveil cards plus Stitcher's Supplier all look really fun.

Looks to me as if all the cards have been spoiled now so it's a good time for deck brewing.
