Help Choosing a Deck for my favorite card!

Modern Deck Help forum

Posted on June 13, 2018, 6:04 p.m. by Will361405

Hello, I love brewing decks, most of which are budget but I also enjoy the more teir side of modern. I was wanting to build a budget deck for my favorite card Bloodbraid Elf and then upgrade it. I would want the initial build to be around $100-$150 and then I will upgrade over time. Any ideas for the deck? I love temur and tempo decks the most so maybe a temur deck would work! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is already a high tier deck that can be built cheaply called panza(?). It is a land destruction deck and bloodbraid is a 4 of in it. I don’t have a deck list or anything but I’m sure someone could point you in the right direction.

I have seen the ponza deck and ponza was one of my first budget decks but my group really didn't like it so I stopped playing it, I would be more into an aggro based strategy but I can't seem to find many with Bloodbraid Elf

You could probably squeeze it into some kind of zoo deck with Burning-Tree Emissary, Reckless Bushwhacker, Kird Ape, and Wild Nacatl for that price if you really tried. Zoo used to be very good so this seems like a solid place to start.

Will361405,
I LOVE Bloodbae too ... that card is just sooooo good!

I recommend checking out SaffronOlive's GR HasteBraid deck for sure.

You can also build it more midrangy , trading some of the Aggro slots for Boartusk Liege. I've been working on that for a while now, with the Ponza mana/dork package, and even though it's a little bit of Magical Christmasland, I can confirm there's just nothing quite like having a Liege on the battlefield, casting Bloodbraid Elf, Cascading into a Boggart Ram-Gang, and then swinging with a 3/4 Trampler, a 5/5 with Wither, and a 5/4!

Xenagos, the Reveler fits nicely into the midrange shell as well ... generating Hasty 2/2s is great, but his Hasty 4/4s (when the Liege is out) are just bonkers.

Good luck (and skill) with the brew! Please tag me when you have a shell ... I'd love to take a look.

There's a neat RG aggro deck on here called CoCo Ball Breaker that played Bloodbraid Elf with Ball Lightning and Groundbreaker. It doesn't have Bloodbraid anymore, but it worked pretty well when it did. I think someone made a video of it being played. You could even combine that idea with a Primal Forcemage deck (like this: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/much-abrew-about-nothing-forcemage-green-modern) to make it even more explosive.

just play ponza.. if your group does not like it. let the group evolve. it is how you get better with mtg.. do not change your deck because they could not keep up. you will not improve because of that.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I will be checking on all of these and I might post a list once I determine it. Also as far as my playgroup goes, I still need friends to play with so I can go without playing ponza, besides I would rather kill them and then be okay with dying on turn 4 or 5 than having them complain about being mana screwed because of me. Again thank all of you for your help!

Will361405,
Hey one thing I forgot to mention earlier: You might want to check out our Ponza Deckbuilding Primer. I totally get it that you're not doing Ponza, so please just ignore the Mana Disruption category ... but every card on the list has seen competitive play, so the other categories may give you some ideas.

I've got a Budget Jund list that isn't too bad. I have some even more budget options listed in the deck description as my current build is somewhere around $250

So, You Wanna Play Jund Yea? (Budget)

I would love to play competitive decks like Jeskai or Grixis, but Scalding Tarn, Snapcaster Mage, and Jace, the Mind Sculptor are F$$$ing expensive. (Scalding Tarn is more like $70 right now) If you aren't going all in with I would steer clear of it. I keep wanting to build BUG Midrange decks (Because I love Dark Confidant) but keep running into Snapcaster Mage and JtMS and having to keep putting it off due to budget.

I know Jund is no cheap deck either, but with it falling hard out of favor, now is the best time to get all of the pieces for it. Jund always finds a way to come back so getting a jump on everything is nothing to scoff at. Besides, it's much easier to find a budget goyf than it is a budget Snapcaster.

Never goes away so maybe you'd rather invest in an archtype that utilizes that. Up to you really.

Not decked with card but also tryed this card. Closest i got was using Bloodbraid Elf in an Artillery based STORM deck to fetch arty cards at no cost. Ran up against a not good enough combo card or 2 for bringing Bloodbraid Elf back into play as often as needed. so kinda gave up for now. I personally dont care for the common way its made into top 8 GP's/Pro Tours. Never seems as powerfull as they make it in the decks they make. Dunno..
