Welcome to my page! Thanks for coming by. I enjoy everything Jund and normally favor it in every format I delve into. Modern is by far my favorite format. I've been playing on and off for years since Mercadian Masks. My first deck was the "deck:06-03-19-swoop Deck" and I've been hooked ever since. I took a long break around the time of 9th or 10th Edition to concentrate on school while unbeknownst to me, Modern was developing into a hot commodity. I came back to Magic during M15 and have been a student ever since. I dug out my old box of cards and threw together some pretty terrible decks before learning about Modern. I took a stab at Modern with one of these Dumpster Fires and got roasted by Grishoalbrand and I quickly realized I was doing it wrong. I eventually got together an deck:8-rack-attack-1 deck which morphed into Mono Black Devotion. Both did about average at FNM. I then got smacked around by Jund and instantly knew that THAT was the deck I wanted to play. Please feel free to post any decks to my wall that you'd like feedback on. I enjoy a good Budget build and the occasional Jank. Or is it Junk? Have a look around and check out my decks. (I have a bunch) Happy travels on your journey through the Multiverse.

Here are some of my current decks. I update them frequently as I play MTG whenever I get a free moment. Be it here through playtesting or at my LGS.

Much appreciated feedback! I've never played the deck myself, but I have played against it. The core of the deck is very affordable at ~$75 or less. It's the pieces that keep the deck competitive that really kill any attempt at a competitive budget build. AKA Mox Opal and Ensnaring Bridge .

I know the builds before Whir of Invention was printed were mostly GB shells. I agree that having more fog effects could replace Ghostly Prison . It would help make room for that one of Ensnaring Bridge too.

Thanks for the input Meuhforever!
I've been trying to think of a way to get Whir of Invention into the mix. The almost requires the deck to be mono Blue. Which could be a better approach to the deck....

As for the one of Ensnaring Bridge . I am working that in regardless. Ghostly Prison is OK but if we get the lock in place, they will draw lands and therefore have the mana to swing in.

Just did a little playtesting with this and it is really fun. A lot of bounce/reanimator effects. What are your thoughts on Finale of Devastation ?

BTW.... All of the playtesting can be done right here on tappedout with the use of alters and something like MTG Cardsmith

A big key to custom card design is to design cards and not decks.

You design interesting cycles of cards or cards that care about a certain aspect of the game and then create a spoiler of the completed set. Let people find card interactions and lines of play from there. The set doesn't need to be powerful. Just fun.

design cards, NOT decks

So you want to create a custom card set to be played in a vacuum using all of the standard rulings of MTG as it exists today.

My main question is regarding print run. How many of each card are you planning to print? If everyone has access to all of the cards in multiples, broken combos would be inherently balanced simply by everyone having access to the combo.

This again goes back to, "Why the 1 & 5 card limitations?" The format will "evolve" and the best cards will be discovered as time goes on in play-testing. The most broken of which get sent back to the drawing board by way of vote. If the majority of the "Design Team" agrees that a card is broken, un-break it or toss it out all together.

Starting points to me are:
What is the set theme? Where does it take place? What is the story? What are the mechanics?

I'd be glad to review some card designs for you if you ever need assistance or just an outside opinion.

Maybe have each person develop cards based around a specific keyword/mechanic or color identity. This would need to be a collaboration. Having cycles of cards (AKA the "insert planeswalker"'s triumph cycle) would be beneficial. A dual land cycle would be a nice jumping off point.

May 16, 2019 9:10 a.m. Edited.

I think you'd be better off doing a draft with the cards rather than have the 1 and 5 card limitations. Set some keyword limitations to make the cards cohesive. This would be a limited environment so limited keywords should keep the play "fun"

Metropolis39 I prefer the timing difference and the casting cost that Explore has. Explore allows you to play the additional land at any point in the turn whereas Growth Spiral is at that moment.
