C18 and all the new options

Commander (EDH) forum

Now with all of the C18 legendary creatures spoiled, we got all we need to work with. What ones will you be looking forward to building?

For me:

Izzet: I'm going to rely on the stock list for this one, because my plan will involve all three options. No, I exclude Varchild here. She won't fit in my plans.

Jund: I already built Windgrace, but Gyrus is calling to me for some reason. I like Xantcha, but I don't plan on building her.

Bant: I built Tuvasa, but my favorite (and personal choice) would actually be Kestia, as she promotes a unique game plan with auras. No more voltron! \o/ I have a flavorful build for Arixmethes, but it's not high-priority.

Esper: Only Yennett appeals to me here, and she can be quite bomby. Yuriko is a card I might build someday.

What about you guys? Discuss.

I've been wanting to build a proper Ninja tribal EDH deck since I started playing EDH so I've already got my first draft for Yuriko here: Yuriko Hidden Tiger. Also best deck name :D

Other than her I do want a Jund land deck but I'll have to see how it plays out with Windgrace I'm stuck between him and Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire.

If it helps you decide, feel free to check out my list to see if Windgrace is more your style. That said, I just might slip Asmadi into the deck. I've been wanting to use him for a while. Gone with the Windgrace *Primer*.

I plan on building Kestia tomorrow once I know what's going on with that stock list, and I'm looking forward to it. You can't beat the Star-border and the legendary frame together. I forgot to mention that in the OP.

Honestly Im probably going to get the Esper deck because a) I already have a UB deck that I can add Yuriko into, and b) when I finally get all new commanders I plan on turning all my dual color decks into tricolor decks. Frankly I'm not a huge fan of using planeswalkers as commanders for my deck.

In Izzet, Tawnos seems interesting for an artifact ability based deck. Brudiclad is interesting because it's rare to see UR decks utilizing tokens but tbh that honestly sounds like something I'd seriously like to do. As for Varchild, she could be built in a very chaos based deck.

In the Jund deck, Gyrus seems like he could make a very interesting Hydra tribal deck or be built into a seriously weird reanimator deck. Depending on what's included. Also, both Xantcha and Thantis scream political decks with funny outcomes.

In Bant, it seems interesting to try and build a Voltron on Thavusa since she buffs herself with enchantments. Also, I'd probably build enchantment tribal for Kestia, with lots of bestow style tricks. As for Arixmethes, he seems like he could work out well in a GU style lands deck.

Esper for me screams value. Ninjitsu trickery/pain dealing with Yuriko, Varina could helm a serious zombie tribal deck or graveyard deck and Yennett is pure value.

Unfortunately dbpunk, Gyrus wouldn’t work too well for hydra tribal as quite a few involve in their cost.

That is unfortunate, but Gyrus can work. That rfg clause will be a pain, but I'm sure there's a way to work with it.

...and I just realized how it works with the Lands deck. In Jund lands, you self-mill (Dredge) and will no doubt hit creatures. Our good Hydra friend here unearths said creatures for a run before they go poof. I think I see what you're trying to pull here, Wizards.

I'm for sure getting the Esper deck. I plan on making some Miracle + Blink ETB midrange control shell strongly focused on individual card quality. I'm in need of a durdly deck I can play in a range of groups.

I’m going to get the jund deck and play around with it some. Right now I don’t have any plans for it, but it’ll slowly become focused (or I'll become bored of it and scrap it for parts). I’m also working on Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer because clones and tokens. He seems sweet, and opens up an entirely new path for izzet, which has always intrigued me, while not one of my favorite color pairs (no green or black).

Personally, neither enchantress or artifacts really excite me, but the Esper deck is interesting. Probably not enough for me to actually get it, but enough so that I look foreword to facing it.

Yuriko could’ve totally been her own deck (maybe not this year, but in general), and we could’ve gotten some sweet new ninjas with her. If ninjas had more support around them, I would for sure be interested

Why would anyone exclude Varchild?... Best card in the set in the best color to exist :)

Izzet: None of these interest me, Saheeli and Brudiclad are not as efficient as I would like, but Tawnos seems too competitive.

Jund: Gyrus, Waker of Corpses really seems cool to me, the rest meh and Xantcha too competitive of a build. I love how it can be cast for three mana and if you have a haste enabler (Concordant Crossroads or Lightning Greaves) and already milled your deck (Entomb or Buried Alive) you can start swinging early with nasty creatures, possibly Master of Cruelties? Add in Doubling Season or Parallel Lives and things start to get crazy! Totally not a Tammy.

Bant: These generals all seem interesting to me, but I don’t think they’re fast enough for my liking. Maybe I’ll see a decklist and change my mind.

Esper: I’m excited for this one! I’ve been dying to upgrade my Ghoulcaller Gisa zombie deck to be dimir, but now I’ll go esper! Varina, Lich Queen seems powerful on her own, but will surely be a success in her colors. I’ll probably brew a mix of zombie tribal and control. Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign seems like a fun build! Use some top deck manipulation to cast a crazy spell like Emrakul, the Promised End early. Aminatou, the Fateshifter puzzles me. I may be inspired by a deck to build her, but until then I’ll hold off.

Izzet: I can see myself getting this deck and immediately replacing Saheeli with Jhoira as the Commander. Not fun or exiting, I know, but I don’t plan on building the deck around busted combos. I just think Jhoira works better as she cares about more than just Artifacts.

Jund: I’m working on an actual Lands Matter deck in 5 colors. I’ll pick up a few of the new cards from this deck but don’t really want the rest of it. I just don’t think what they built is anything close to what people wanted from “lands matter”

Bant: I’m not entirely sure what I’ll do with this deck. I plan on buying it second and just running it as is until I get some ideas.

Esper: Gonna go full odd tribal. Seems like a fun deck building restriction. It’s fun in hearthstone and I don’t see why it won’t be here. I’ll buy this one first and probably tinker with it the most.

Jund: Thantis, "the crapped-on" has some possibilities... Very fun when I proxied her. I think their are a couple of misunderstandings regarding a good build for her (maybe too much blue slowbuild players out there :) ). It appears to me that there is too much pillowfort focus with her and too much concern for deathtouch. Now for my meta I am providing most the "combat oomph" and prompting action. Hunted cycle is great, vows are great, LIFELINK IS FAR BETTER!!! than deathtouch for rattlesnake value on forced combat!! Yes, I said it - and stand by it. But most of all she is strongest with a "DMG matters groupslug" philosophy. A lot of low cmc curses, and repetitive damage, discard enchantments really shine with her when coupled with cards to produce pawns & damage dealers for opponents. Things like Pain Magnification start triggering ALOT when you are forcing non-ideal combat. INEVITABLY when the pawns build up or you cast a vow or Sheltering Ancient creatures into the threat zone: that is when specific boardwipes are cast... Except you still have all these life-draining gas-guzzling groupslug enchantments in play.
