Best Commander for Land Sac/ Recycle?

Commander Deck Help forum

I want to make a deck based around land sacrificing and recursion. I know plenty on the obvious two: The Gitrog Monster and Titania, Protector of Argoth. However, I don't know how either of them feel when actually played or if there are any other more hidden commander potentials then just them or if I should stick to Meren of Clan Nel Toth and just stick them both in there for a minor land recycle theme to the main theme of creature sac.

I prefer titania. Way less to care about your triggers. She offers a lot of value and can close games fast. At least in 1 vs 1.

I've always thought an Abzan commander would be great for a deck with land sacrificing. That way you have the graveyard recursion from B/G but you also have access to Knight of the Reliquary and Overgrown Estate. I also like the flavor of a land themed deck with Doran, the Siege Tower as a general. Karador, Ghost Chieftain would work if you prefer creature recursion to be the main theme of the deck. Plus Abzan has access to the best removal in the game.

I know Gitrog decks have a lot of combo potential, and a potential really fast win (a friend's list won on turn 4ish i think). So if that's you're thing, play gitrog and put titania in the 99. If you like beatdown, go for titania. I don't know any other land commanders off the top of my head except Child of Alara, but that's more if you want a lot of utility lands and not really land sac value.

Omnath, Locus of Rage is decently fun. That's what I just built this month.

Perilous Forays + Lotus Cobra or Amulet of Vigor = pull all the (legal target) lands out of your deck and Lightning Bolt your opponents with omnath's abilities. Add Purphoros, God of the Forge and you're rockin'

There are a ton of mass land sac/destruction options in red. Maybe Shattergang Brothers is worth a mention; to include many of the ideas floating around

Shattergang Brothers is a good idea but I am not sure how to build on them properly. The only Abzan commander I own though is Anafenza, the Foremost. I own a few Jund and Sultai commanders but nothing quite on the same level.

Another option is Bory, he is always silly.

Or Mina and Denn

I don't really like green/ red together though.

Definitely Child of Alara. That way you get all the fun stuff that a Lands deck wants. Gitrog, Mina and Denn, Sun Titan, Academy Ruins, etc. Not to mention you get to play Mazes End as a wincon.

It honestly comes down to your particular play style. I currently run a Meren of Clan Nel Toth deck and I personally do not view her as a land recursion commander. Sure, it could be done but really the best thing with land recursion in a Meren deck is thinning your deck by dumping extra lands into your grave early in the game and then using Life from the Loam to get them back later when you need them. Meren in my opinion more about value added creatures that do things to control the board.

Hypnotoad in my opinion is the way to go if you want to have massive card advantage (and with Titania in the 99 of course) and you want to stay in the Golgari colors. Yes, a lot of lists out there for Hypnotoad can be combotastic, but you don't have to run it that way if that's not your style. You can run it as a quick aggro deck by ramping into big beaters like Avenger of Zendikar, Rampaging Baloths, or legal eldrazi titan of your choice.

But if you want to go pure land recursion it is really had to beat Titania. From the lists I have seen (and the list that I personally want to build) the power level is rather high. The decks seem to run even more methods of ramping then the Hypnotoad lists. And again, ramping into big beaters like those above. And also overwhelming the board with the 5/3 elementals.
