Intro: I had several Garruk, cursed huntmen that I got from draft, and since he was so much fun in limited, I decided to test his potential in modern. This is just a "for fun" deck that actually does pretty well despite being something I kind of whipped together.
The Goal: The main point of the deck is to get Garruk, cursed huntsmen on the battlefield and we have multiple tools at our disposal to do so.
Removal and Protection: Removal is self explanatory here,
Abrupt Decay
and
Assassin's Trophy
will do most of the work thinning the field. We also now have
Murderous Rider
as an added bonus.
Deathsprout
is one of my favorite cards in recent time and the ramp works perfectly for this deck. Lastly, the addition of ob nixilous, reignited, and
Vraska, Golgari Queen
was also considered for their removal capabilities. The extra protection comes from our deathtouch friends
Foulmire Knight
,
Gifted Aetherborn
, and
Leyline Prowler
. Prowler is also one of my favorite mana dorks that also serves as a solid threat.
Why Vraska and Ob Nixilous: To be honest, it's mostly because I have them, but they do have great synergy with the deck.
Vraska, Golgari Queen
can serve as a great card draw engine, and usually the loss of a permanent doesn't hurt us too badly. This is especially true if you're being mana flooded, that way you replace a land with a new card. It's also partiularly useful for killing Garruk's wolves to increase his loyalty counters. Her ultimate is not likely to happen, but it of course can win games.
Ob Nixilous, reignited is another great card engine and the life loss is negligible with all our lifelink. His ultimate is not great however. One of the best reasons to run these two walkers is also their ability to serve as removal themselves. Together, with Garruk, I call them The Dark Ones.
Other Cards: Again, I'm running one storrev, dekarin lich because I had one, and his ability to retrieve a planeswalker or creature from the graveyard is super useful. I'm also running a playset of lovestruck beasts because this card is hilarious, and often can finish a game before Garruk even hits the field. With all our 1/1 creatures, in addition to it's own adventure ability, he will almost always be able to attack.
Gifted Aetherborn
was selected over
Vampire Nighthawk
simply because it costs less, but is still almost as effective. Nighthawk is in the sideboard in case our foe has a lot of flyers. The lifelink is really important for our resiliency, because even on low health I have found that surviving long enough to get Garruk out will turn the tables instantly.
Thanks for looking at my deck, I hope you like it and suggestions are always welcome!
