Let it go Timmy, it's Countertown. —Feb. 13, 2016

So I took my Control deck to FNM. I placed first.

Round 1: R/G Aggro 0-2

First game I lost because he swung in too fast for me to respond and stabilize the board. Second game I sided in Displacement Wave and a extra Planar Outburst but got stuck on 3 mana and lost.

Round 2: R/U Thopter 2-0

First game I started off well but couldn't get a planar til late game. Managed to Dig it and wipe the board while having decent land creatures and a well boosted Myth Realized. Second game I sided in Displacement Wave and bounced his thopters mid game. Got Narset out and board wiped then swung in for 18.

Round 3: B/R Devoid Burn 2-0

Both games i took damage till i stabilized turn fiveish then just controlled the board state from there on out. No real danger since most of my creatures had high power thanks to Noyan.

Round 4: R/W/G Ally 2-0

Was worried about this one because Allies can be fast and like the first round catch me off guard. First game went well, came off fast enough with some essential early game counters. Second started a bit more dicey but some spot removal kept me alive till i had enough land to control the board from then on out.

Round 5: B/U/W Control 2-0

I easily out controlled him. He didn't have near enough control to keep up with me. Dominated easily both games.

Round 6: B/G Aristocrats 2-0

Game 1 went well. Countered essential creatures that gained and lost life along with creature returns like rally. Used simple removal on annoying creatures like Nantuko Husk and Warden of the First Tree. Game two i didn't side anything in and played normal. Went easier since i knew what to expect.

Round 7 B/U Hand Disruption 2-0

This one i was worried about due to early hand disruption and creatures that were cheap and brutal Reality Smasher. Game 1 was rough due to a poor mana draw. I drew into some eventually and his few hand disruption cards didn't hurt too much. We both stalled mid-late game but i drew into a dig and came around stalling him permanently and winning with myth and noyan. Game 2 I got a solid draw and dominated from turn 3 on. By turn 7 it was over and he scooped.

Final Results: First Place going 12-2

The deck worked better than i expected save for the first round and Myth, Noyan, and Outburst just made the mid game brutal and game changing. Usually once Planar dropped it was over and there was no way they could stop my deck from winning within the next 2 to 3 turns.

this is a great idea! I had a similar deck idea, but was going to use Patron of the Valiant, didn't know about High Sentinels of Arashin which is much better

also I was thinking of using Relief Captain but it only adds counters once, your High Sentinels of Arashin is better still

Thanks! It was weird, I went nearly 300 views with neither an upvote or downvote. Patron is good in the aspect that it keeps its counters. However overall I agree that High Sentinels is better. It was wildly ignored in competitive play because the kind of decks it went with weren't the best. However with the new awaken ability I think it has a solid place in competitive standard. A strong card in right deck.

yes, the deck I was using had Suppression Bonds as well as Stasis Snare and I was scoffed at for using Suppression Bonds instead until I used it on a walker and they had to look it up to make sure thats legal lol

Looks good! Myth Realized would probably be pretty kickass in here

I forgot about myth realized. I'll have to take a look and see how it will be.

K so I have foist that day's u doing to be a very bad card for control. Yes it gives you has but it also gives your oponet a brand new hand and gives them back all of the spells you counterd. Basically it makes you louse control of the game.

January 25, 2016 4:44 p.m.

TheMageOlogist says... #8

Yes but if you are doing the right think begin a control player you shoudl have a lot of cards and your opponent shoudl have none, giving them a full hand is a bad idea. In edh there are so many more cards that it would play differently because edh is different form standard but in the current meta I would only seeing it hurt you. Because as for ramp you just give them back the ulamogs you spent so much time trying to stop, for agro well congrats them on there now full hand of usually pure gas and so on. In edh I can see it working but currently in standard I just do not think its a good idea.

i dont really like days undoing because you really need to be ahead, but I do admit that as long as you cast it late when you got 6-7 mana its cheap enough that you have mana to use on them counters you will pick up! but really something like dig through time is vastly superior, your best two out of 7 and them nothing beats 7 each any day.

That's my intention for Day's undoing. Late game to drag towards win con(getting back some lost legendaries and field wipes) or really early to hurt tempo and get my hand full of counters. It has a good place here just have to be choosy about when you use it.

January 27, 2016 1:19 p.m.

I think running some more spot removal would be some good. Like Immolating Glare or even Silkwrap can help early since you don't want to wait for Planar Outburst as your only exit plan especially against faster decks.

I also suggest to running one creature that is impossible for your opponent to get rid of. Pearl Lake Ancient is great for the theme while being budget.

Yeah, Day's Undoing is a weird card in standard because it is the LAST thing you want to draw/play in the late game. Giving your opponent their resources back is a very risky thing particularly since it end YOUR turn, giving them a free draw step, but is great for cheating "at the end of your turn.....etc....effects.

I highly recommend Jeskai Ascendancy to go along with Noyan. They work so well together.

maybe a little more lands and think about adding Disciple of the Ring

This deck is not really a budget deck, i think you should change the name of the deck so people so mix up.

February 4, 2016 8:13 a.m.

dylanjay says... #15

Goblinkid21 its certainly is budget it should have 2 more flooded and at least 3 jace. so 200$ less has the right to claim budget.

February 5, 2016 2:48 a.m.

Goblinkid21 says... #16

But for me maybe other people, budget decks are mostly $35 or less and reasonable to make that"s all.

February 5, 2016 8:48 a.m.

dylanjay says... #17

Goblinkid21 did you just make that up? a lot of the time budget decks can be even 200+ bucks because its a much cheaper "budget" version of its counterpart that actually sees play in tournaments, which can run upwards of 800+. I dont know anyone who uses the term budget deck to literally mean they dont spend money on magic cards.

February 5, 2016 9:10 a.m.

blong217 says... #18

What's the tournament version if I may ask.

February 5, 2016 10:22 a.m.

Goblinkid21 says... #19

dude, all i am saying is that not all MTG players have $200+ just laying around, and those players are mostly Kids or new players and if they don't have a to make money they would ask his or her mom and dad for the cards and i don't think that their parents would want to spend that much money for it.

P.S. i am not trying to fight with you i'm saying this for the newer players and kids, that's all

February 5, 2016 12:53 p.m.

blong217 says... #20

I may try doing another extreme budget $20 deck like I used too.

+1 upvote, but the phrase 'budget' is clearly subjective. I can add nothing as a Standard Pauper player. Play and be well.

February 10, 2016 9:24 p.m.

Marvelman7878 says... #23

"Budget" can definitely be subjective, but I came to this page expecting a "budget deck" and not a "cheaper version" of a powerful deck. As a player really interested in this deck and getting into standard, what could you add/subtract to make this deck more budget-y (hitting the $35.00 mark)?

February 11, 2016 10:44 a.m.

blong217 says... #24

To make it really cheaper drop Flooded Strand, Day's Undoing, and if you must Narset Transcendent but narset is really good in this deck. Those three drop about $67. The dual u/w life land could replace Prairie Stream and get you another $12 making the deck $79 cheaper. Puts it in the $30 range.

good job dude that's more "budget" :)
