Dice & Decks - Modern week (2-0-1) —Feb. 5, 2016

Finally time to test the deck against other relatively strong decks and thankfully the slivers did not disappoint.

Only time for 3 rounds and only 8 of us in the pool so not the biggest test in the world, but good enough to gauge the strength of the deck.

Round 1 - GW Landfall (2-0)

Game 1 the speed of the deck overwhelmed the landfall deck and by turn 4 3 Sinew Slivers and a Galerider Sliver had dealt lethal damage.

Game 2 lasted a little longer, but the landfall deck had no answer for anything attaching in the air. The Diffusion Sliver showed some worth preventing early spot removal and the game was over by turn 6.

Round 2 - UW Tron (2-0)

Game 1, speed again proved too much and despite a couple of Remanded Sedge Sliver attempts a flood of slivers had dealt enough damage by turn 5.

Game 2, decided to sideboard in 2x Harmonic Sliver and 2x Kataki, War's Wage and Striking Sliver, 1x Homing Sliver, 1x Galerider Sliver and Two-Headed Sliver out. This game lasted quite a while, yet I still managed to win. The tron deck stalled and failed to find Gifts Ungiven or Elesh Norn  Flip, though did manage to find all of his board wipe. Despite clearing the board three times and Remanding Collected Company three times enough damage got through.

Round 3 - Jeskai Ascendancy (0-2)

Game 1 got off to a reasonable start and managed to get opponent's life total down to 8, before he comboed off and after a 15 minute turn cleared the board and dealt lethal damage.

Game 2 the deck rebelled against me. Mulligan down to 4 as not seeing any land before that and then being stuck on a single land as I put single slivers into play with Aether Vial. Of course by this point the combo had been found and I was killed off.

Overall - (2-0-1)

In the end I managed to finish second, with third going to the UW Tron deck so it wasn't all bad. Turning up with a different deck is always a bonus, not expecting me to have a sliver deck certainly helped I think. I would have quite liked another go at the Jeskai Ascendancy deck though as sideboarding graveyard and enchantment hate could have evened it up if I'd just had the lands. Then again, the randomness of the game is part of what keeps it interesting.

I'd recommend adding at least a couple of basics, otherwise you are very vulnerable to things like Ghost Quarter and Path to Exile

Thanks K00lDudE1. It's also got to be a consideration I guess for Blood Moon. Just working out what lands I need in that case and what I need in normal play. Would quite like to have a backup of Plains too, but just don't know what to cut.

The Steam Vents should probably be a Blood Crypt to add to your swamp count. Eventually replacing the Windswept Heaths with Verdant Catacombs will also help getting swamps out for your sedge slivers, as well as fetching both your basics. Keep up the good work!

Thanks again GeminiSpartanX, another very helpful adjustment.

I see your point about the Steam Vents, not really sure my reasoning for leaving it in when I do have a Blood Crypt.

In an ideal world I would have Verdant Catacombs, but that's definitely something that's still just a pipe dream.

I hear you. I wish I had a playset of Verdant Catacombs myself. I'm still patiently waiting in the hopes that those fetches will be reprinted soon and I'll be able to fully play any Modern deck, since that's what I feel I'm lacking in the most. Well, that and goyfs. :)
