Second Draft —April 25, 2015

After a bit of casual testing, playtested these new ideas:

-Swapped Voyage's End for Anticipate. The 1-scry effect of Voyage's End that doesn't involve drawing a card is so much slower than the effectual 3-scry effect of Anticipate and its draw card. Yeah, I don't get to bounce a creature but whatever; on average now I am spitting out the combo on turn 5.

-Swapped 2 Altar of the Brood for 2 Treasure Cruise. This cut down my 'long' game from about turn 10 to turn 8, since almost every 'long' game involved me ending up with 3+ Altars drawn, which translates to death since I only need one and this deck is fragile against aggro and burn. Learning to use the draw-discard effect on Jeskai Ascendancy Rummaging Goblin and/or Monastery Siege to fuel Treasure Cruise caused me in 3 of my 5 playtests that went 7 turns or longer to pull the last card I needed at least a turn sooner than I would have otherwise.

-Going to sideboard for testing some Ornithopter Midnight Guard and Kiora's Follower with a splash of green. Initially I wasn't going to consider splashing green but I realized that Kiora's does several things: first, even if I don't pull the perfect hand to get a turn 3 kill, it does allow me to field acceleration permanents (( Sigiled Starfish Jeskai Ascendancy Rummaging Goblin Monastery Siege )) faster AND once I no longer need it for mana allows me to untap Sigiled Starfish or Rummaging Goblin...effectively making it as good as having another one of them out who can also do mana.

Hat tip to Darcis for the suggestions.

Wanted to see how inexpensively this deck could be run. Hit the 'Checkout @ TCG' button, swapped Dissolve for Cancel and hit 'Optimize Cart' and the total came out to $9.84 including shipping. Bought and paid for. Will update after some FNM.

You might want to consider splashing green for cards such as Kiora's Follower or Rattleclaw Mystic. Also, you don't really need more than 1 or 2 Altar of the Brood in your deck, since you just loot for it once your combo goes off. A card that works wonders in decks like this is Dragon Mantle, which helps drawing to find your combo pieces. Cards like Valorous Stance would probably be more helpful than Voyage's End (which I'm assuming is mostly here for the scry), since it can answer large threats while also protecting the creatures so you can combo.

Also, Treasure Cruise. That draw do'.

Oh, and if you take this to FNM, a neat trick to mess with the opponent is to change the deck by siding in 4x Midnight Guard and 4x Ornithopter. People will most likely be siding to counter Ascendancy, and then you just go off with creatures (Retraction Helix on Guard, return Ornithopter, cast, untap, repeat).

@Darcis

First, great point about not really needing 4x Altar of the Brood. I like your idea of using the Midnight Guard + Ornithopter combo as a sideboard to counterplay their counterplay. I'll avoid Treasure Cruise because I don't reliably put cards in my graveyard fast enough - I have not had a playtest that takes more than 10 turns to trigger the full combo, usually 5-7 turns - and rarely will I have more than a few cards in my graveyard unless I drew a fistful of Monastery Siege.

The Kiora's Follower is very tempting because if it's down when the combo triggers, it would allow me to bounce all of their permanents, ensuring no clever last-ditch combo. Also would give me a quick way to burn a spare Helix to unsummon several creatures and delay the opponent's aggro. But it doesn't really accelerate the combo; the combo can already trigger turn 4 and no amount of green splash allows it to pop on turn 3.

@valetdetrefle@

I will definitely check out your deck concepts but this one is for Standard, not Modern, so not really applicable with most/all of those suggestions.

Actually, Kiora's Follower/Rattleclaw Mystic do allow turn three combo.

Turn 1: Land.

Turn 2: Land, either Kiora's Follower or Rattleclaw Mystic.

Turn 3: Land, tap your three lands for Jeskai Ascendancy, either untap a blue land with Kiora's Follower or add a blue with Rattleclaw Mystic, use that blue to cast Retraction Helix on your creature, untap it. Get a 0-drop and that's game on turn three. :P

@Darcis

Yeah good look, I do see it now. I might try green splash for the creatures along with a secondary wincon that doesn't involve Retraction Helix for sideboard in case someone gets squirrelly and tries to sideboard a foil to that combo.

Appreciate all the feedback folks!
