Ah mono decks. There are so many upsides. You never get color-screwed, you can save money as you don't have to purchase a bunch of expensive lands. Of course, this deck isn't big on saving money. It's kind of the all-black junk. Takes a big amount of really good, really expensive cards and mashes them into something that could be considered a deck. Let's get into it.

Bitterblossom: If you stick one early, you can get blockers, which this deck needs, plus in late game it will generate flying threats that can swing in for the last few points of damage. All around useful card, but be sure to watch your life total, especially against something like burn.

Bloodghast: One of the best things this deck does is generate a ton of threats that are super hard to deal with. Bloodghast just keeps coming back. Be sure to play your lands in your second main phase, after you've attacked with Bloodghast so if the opponent decided to kill it, you can bring it back without summoning sickness for next turn. If the opponent is on 10 or less life, no need to worry about summoning sickness, it's got haste. With most cards in this deck, your opponent will be very upset when you stick them and Bloodghast is a great example. There is a synergy with Liliana as well. Plus lili, discard a ghast, and play a land. You get a threat for free.

Demigod of Revenge: The top of our curve. This thing is a huge threat, especially with haste. And if you use lili to dump one and then drop one, that's ten in the air for five mana. Those are the plays that really make this deck clutch.

Drana, Liberator of Malakir: Simply a value play early game. Flying will make sure she hits often. And when she does, not only will she buff our team, but herself as well, making the next attack that much more painful.

Geralf's Messenger: Again, the name of the game is threats that are hard to deal with. Your opponent will be scared to kill Geralf's Messenger because not only will it come back bigger, it will deal damage to them when it does!

Inquisition of Kozilek: This deck doesn't have any early game blockers, so in fast matchups like infect or burn, an inquisition can grab their first threat and stall out the game until you can control the board.

Liliana of the Veil: The best planeswalker in modern...enough said.

Phyrexian Obliterator: This card makes our deck. The absolute definition of a threat. Not only is this beast a 5/5 with trample for four, which I might add is good alone, it also is EXTREMELY hard to deal with. Whenever it's dealt damage, your opponent has to sacrifice stuff. You almost want them to try and remove it. What you have to watch out for of course are dismember and path to exile. But other than that, Obliterator can straight up end a game.

Thoughtseize: Basically Inquisition of Kozilek but with a wider target range.

Victim of Night: Vampires, Werewolves, or Zombies aren't common creature types in modern, so the vast majority of the time, Victim ends up being a two mana remove anything you don't like. And the double black is no problem for our mana base, as we are a mono-black deck.

Whip of Erebos: Useful to stay ahead in life during middlegame and can temporarily reanimate something for some crucial points of damage.

Swamp: Gets the manas

Sideboard tech:

Inquisition of Kozilek: Two extra Inquisitions in case you need to worry about disrupting a combo.

Damnation: Sweeps up the mess that some decks (zoo, affinity) barf out.

Dismember: More spot removal mostly for the infect matchup.

Fulminator Mage: Anti-tron/eldrazi shenanigans.

Leyline of the Void: There has been a ton of dredge decks showing up lately and this shuts down there early game. Also messes up Living End and Storm.

Spellskite: God I hate infect.

Surgical Extraction: With all of our discard, we can remove a key threat from the entirety of our opponent's deck.

Build it, have fun.
