Sideboard —April 17, 2015

So, I took it to a competitive modern night in my local meta this week and found out where I my sideboard to go. I did really well against other control decks, and had enough control to screw with combo decks (huzzah!), but sadly my downfall was against two different styles of aggro decks.

Against Merfolk the player stuck two Aether Vials on turn two and then was cheating in his guys. He also ran Cavern of Souls which made my counter spells totally null and void. The game was slow, but he always had the upper hand. So, to answer all of that I need more board wipes! Working on which ones to go, the ones I have in my sideboard right now are tentative.

Against an artifact/aggro deck I just couldn't keep up. Turn 1 he had 2 ornithopers, 2 Memnites and 1 Signal Pest. I pulled off one of the games just by fortunately drawing 3 of my board wipes.

I am still tweaking the other cards, so feel free to give me feedback!

Also, Narset Transcendent is dumb and I love her.

Cool deck! I'm a big fan of Render Silent, and most other Silence effects, myself.

With the number of boardwipes you run and the fact that your primary creature is AEtherling, Batterskull seems like it is more trouble than it is worth with all the bouncing and re-equipping you'll be doing.

In it's place I'd suggest Timely Reinforcements. It can bring you back from the brink of death against fast aggro decks and give you blockers to buy you time to reassert the law. Besides, if you're ever in a position where it does nothing, you're winning anyway.

In defense of Batterskull; I aught to never have to equip it to anybody with its living weapon ability, so it probably never will be equipped to an AEtherling. It is just another way that I can take my time while slowly chipping at my opponent and regaining some life that I probably spent on pain lands/fetch lands.

I have looked into Timely Reinforcements before and I like it... except for the fact that it goes at sorcery speed. I feel like against aggro decks I might as well cast Supreme Verdict and move on with my life... Is there any other good lifegain spells that cast at instant speeds?

I really appreciate the fact that you had a suggestion after pointing out a flaw... Too many people comment on decks without thinking their critiques through. Thanks for the feedback!

I recommend putting in some Sphinx's Revelation, and if you want to go old-school, maybe put in some Calciform Pools.

Oops! Didn't see you already had a Sphinx's Revelation! Sorry!

Haha, nice Hashtag-Netdeck :) I like Calciform Pools...except I already have SOOOOO many special lands, and they are a bit slow. I am adding 2 Reliquary Towers to the deck so I can get the best bang for Sphinx's Revelation as well as Narset Transcendent which I am replacing the two copies of Batterskull with. After playtesting it did seem like having 8 win cards in a deck like this was a bit overkill. They are all quite effective, I just need to only get one and wait for the right time to play it, and Batterskull just felt a bit... cumbersome.

Thanks for the feedback, and keep it coming!

Thanks for the feedback TheAlexGnan! I like that deck a lot, I might use his sideboard as a good starting point to get mine up and running.

I added in the copies of Narset Transcendent to get my card draw flowing a bit better. I really don't mind that you have to reveal the card to put it in your hand. Sometimes the knowledge of a counterspell can slow down my opponent and give me an opening to do something else.

Thoughts?

I don't really like AEtherling in a nutshell, but the fact that you can ult Narset can actually make it unkillable and allow you to spend your mana to kill them, and that I like. Be careful of dependence on Detention Sphere against BG decks, I reccommend boarding them all out for instant removal such as Celestial Purge.

Your deck seems to also have trouble dealing with graveyard play in testing against my Undying Undying deck. Rest in Peace could be side boarded to help with similar graveyard shenanigans.

Yeah, agree with TheAlexGnan, you need some draw spells so it won't keep your hand completely depleted before turn 7 (which is preferably when you'd want to use Sphinx's Revelation for it to be useful). If you're tight on money, Gitaxian Probe (good, as you necessarily don't have to spend any mana, which might be essential for playing your spells) or Think Twice (I like in control decks, as it's instant speed and can be played on the end of an opponent's turn if you don't use any of your counters) are good choices, otherwise you got the bit more expensive Serum Visions.

Love it. I have been missing UW Control since it rolled out of standard. This is sweet.

I also agree that this deck could probably profit from more card advantage. mr_spooner's idea of Think Twice is quite effective as it always gives you something to do while you are leaving up counterspell mana. However I think you need at least a pair of Snapcaster Mage in here as the ability to reuse a revelation, verdict, or counter spell is very important for UW control lists.

I am going to playtest it in my meta pretty soon here (waiting for a modern night to come up... Too many standard nights!) and see how it works. I will look into investing in Serum Visions. What do you think I should cut for that? And as for Snapcaster Mage... oh I wish I was made of money. Last I checked he went from 30 to 50 dollars. Haha. Someday.
