Sideboard

Pretty straightforward Goblin Beatdown, wins pretty consistently by turn 3 or 4 so long as some butts are on the board before the opponent's removal comes out. Constant pressure from hasty one-drops, cheap removal, and the ever-present Blood Moon make this deck a little more robust in modern than you might expect. Mutavault helps maintain pressure, especially since it takes all the tribal buffs too. It's a nonbo with Blood Moon at face value, but by the time Blood a moon comes out, it's fine as a mountain--which this deck definitely puts to work.

I'm pretty proud of where this deck has ended up since it's very humble origins, and recently I've been able to pilot to an average of second or third place at FNM, with pretty frequent first place finishes. Feel free to give it a try and please leave feedback!

So last night went very well for my goblins:

2-1 vs Monoblack Devotion 2-0 vs Goblins (strongly token-based) 2-1 vs Snow-Covered Boros 1-2 vs White Anti-Combo

Came in second overall

I suppose I shouldn't second guess a good thing, but I made some changes in response to what did happen.

  1. Krenko, as much as I love him, never saw play. When he was in the deck, I either didn't draw him or didn't get to a point where he was needed (most of these games ended in 5 turns), but most of the time he was what I sided out.

  2. Chieftain >>> King. Going to sideboard them, along with Blood Moon (it's funny--last time, only expensive mana bases, so I get Blood Moon to compensate. This time, only one deck relied on non-basics, and I lost to it anyway). Picked up another Chieftain, which was my MVP anyway.

  3. Going to try the Rabblemaster again. I didn't like it much before, but then again the deck has changed a LOT since then, so I'll give it another shot. I still had my one foil one and traded my winner's bonus to a guy for another (also how I scored the fourth Chief)

  4. When I wasn't drawing what I needed, life sucked. Also, Shock, while useful for pinging that last bit of damage, was not exactly an all-star. QED, I've decided to swap those for Magma Jets to see if the Scry can improve my "long" game.

Two weeks till the next Gopher Modern FNM--stay tuned!
