So what are the Background builds you're wanting to start?

I want to try my hand at building Karlach, Fury of Avernus with Raised by Giants. Now Karlach is a 10/10 who lands a second combat phase the first time he swings. That's 20 commander damage if he connects both times. One simple little boon and he swings for lethal each turn.

A little protection, a little "Can't be blocked" and suddenly you TKO any opponent in one swing. Go for the greatest threat at the table first and work your way down.

Idk man sounds kinda Gruul to me shrug

I don't like any of them very much

griffstick, awe how come? Many of them do feel underwhelming. I suspect they feared another Partners problem if they made anything 2 colors. That's something I noticed is every Background and Legendary Creature are all mono. But, that I think nerfed it all too much. They could have at least done 2-color Commanders with 1-color Backgrounds so your deck can be 3 colors at maximum. That, I think, would have been more than a fair compromise.

I haven't taken a solid look at them all yet but a few seemed pretty neat. I think a lot of folks just like to build 3 color decks mostly. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Cultist of the Absolute

Haunted One

Agent of the Iron Throne

All seem like they could be pretty good if paired up well.

I'm currently theory-crafting a Wilson, Refined Grizzly deck with Shameless Charlatan that will be all about having Wilson turn into other creatures to do stuff. Right now I'm thinking of adding some +1/+1 counters and ability counters as support, but I'm still in early stages. I think I'm gonna call my deck 'Bear Incognito'.

If Wilson becomes a copy of something else, he will lose all of his abilities right? Because it doesn't become a copy "in addition to". Just "becomes a copy".

And it's not even until end of turn. It's just a permanent effect.

Haven't built any of these yet, but here's a few that caught my eye.

Erinis, Gloom Stalker + Scion of Halaster for that pauper dredgey goodness.

Burakos, Party Leader + Folk Hero might have to stretch a bit on the Wizards, but it could be doable.

Karlach, Fury of Avernus + Haunted One for a pretty good representation of my current D&D character.

Ganax, Astral Hunter + Feywild Visitor because Dragons like Treasure.

I haven't done too much research into pairings, but I do think a few had some potential (for me, at least) :

Folk Hero, Clan Crafter, Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher, Criminal Past, Dragon Cultist and Cloakwood Hermit all seem pretty cool, too.

I will admit, I do like CLB's background partner system a lot more than the dungeon mechanic that AFR gave us. It feels much more "DnD" to me. (as someone who's never played DnD)

TypicalTimmy I know that. The point of the deck will be to have Wilson be a spy. :)

I do want the deck to be able to do things, so the real commander will be Shameless Charlatan.

Somewhere rattling around I've got a very loose idea for a background tribal deck. Some sort of enchantress voltron, but all the pumps and buffs come from various backgrounds instead of auras.

Unlife I'm working on a Tana, the Bloodsower and Tymna the Weaver loaded with backgrounds and other 'commander matters' cards like Fury Storm and Bloodsworn Steward. I don't think it'll be great by any means, but hopefully it'll be fun.

Abaques, I'd forgotten about those creatures, I'll have to include them. I was bouncing between Saskia the Unyielding and Nethroi, Apex of Death, but now I'm thinking maybe Kethis, the Hidden Hand would actually work better, even if he has no combat abilities.

Unlife I ended up making my deck yesterday and I took it to my local LGS. It actually performed pretty well despite my super budget manabase from 2018.

Here's the deck: You Came From Where?

I think Haunted One is insane. Probably best paired with Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher because she has a tap ability though the peasant W one also might wirk pretty well. Vhal opens up both aristocrats (undying) or untap/aggro stuff in humans and/or wizards both of which are extremely strong tribes.

ENZU - It is, but it works well with lots of the background commanders. Creature type matters more than having a tap ability, honestly.

Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher cares about toughness, so I prefer Cultist of the Absolute, which adds up to 6 toughness.

being able to trigger haunted one during opponents turns in response to a wipe is very powerful. I mean haunted one is good in a combat centric deck anyway, but having a tap ability in the command zone allows you to Aphetto Alchemist or Voltaic Key/Magewright's Stone stuff basically doing +2 multiple times a turn while adding mana...that's a machine gun
