Cloakwood Hermit works from cards that are discarded as well as killed. Any of the red draw/discard cards would help your card draw problem and you get your squirrels.
Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin is a pretty cheap token generator to back up your squirrels.

Have you considered adding the new background, Cloakwood Hermit? Jaheira, Friend of the Forest could be useful as well.

I haven't done too much research into pairings, but I do think a few had some potential (for me, at least) :

Shadowheart, Dark Justiciar and Inspiring Leader for Orzhov token shenanigans. The buff from the background helps Shadowheart draw cards, too. Gut, True Soul Zealot and Halsin, Emerald Archdruid also work really well with the background here.

Ganax, Astral Hunter and Acolyte of Bahamut. Gruul dragons. 'Nuff said.

Sarevok, Deathbringer and Raised by Giants seems crazy. If no permanents left the battlefield this turn, you lose 10 life? Yikes!
Folk Hero, Clan Crafter, Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher, Criminal Past, Dragon Cultist and Cloakwood Hermit all seem pretty cool, too.
I will admit, I do like CLB's background partner system a lot more than the dungeon mechanic that AFR gave us. It feels much more "DnD" to me. (as someone who's never played DnD)

Assuming that Cloakwood Hermit was one of your commanders, yes it is now both a commander and a creature and will get benefits from backgrounds.

Say Opalescence is in play, and it's making my Cloakwood Hermit into a creature... is my Hermit considered to be one of my "commander creatures" now...? I'm assuming that was the intention with the wording, to allow this, but I just want to be sure that's correct. Thanks in advance! :)

Thanks, Sephyrias, currently I'm thinking about making a Jaheira, Friend of the Forest deck, this card makes many underplayed cards like Gingerbread Cabin become very good, still picking the background, there is no background really impress me, Cloakwood Hermit seems decent but mono green means the fewer option
Also, I'm planning on getting a Captain N'ghathrod deck and making some small change, is there any good cheap cards should put in that deck?
At last, I wonder how is Ganax, Astral Hunter like Galazeth Prismari? I thought Galazeth is more like make artifacts rather than use etb
