Looking to try something new

Commander (EDH) forum

Looking to try something new that doesn't make my opponents hate me. Whats the most fun commander deck you've ever played? Doesn't have to be all too competitive.

I know decklists aren't normally allowed in this Forum but if I request them as the OP maybe that's ok?

I play in a highly competitive group that's ok with absolutely anything, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Even though he's nowhere near the most competitive general out there, I still regularly bust out Nekusar, the Mindrazer.

My deck:

Nekusar, Take the Wheel! Playtest

Commander / EDH TheDevicer

SCORE: 21 | 7 COMMENTS | 5834 VIEWS

He's one of those generals that kinda relies on his ability and synergistic cards. Chaining together multiple Wheel of Fortune effects per turn feels magnificent.

Big, fast creatures with ramp are fun. One of my favorite decks is one with Xenagos, God of Revels as commander. I play with it a lot and have foiled it out. It can be pretty competitive and certain cards can get hated off the table pretty quick (such as Hydra Omnivore), but it's a ton of fun and most players don't view it as much of a threat until it's too late. As long as you don't go for the infinite combat phases you shouldn't get hated much.

Grenzo, Dungeon Warden is incredibly unique and flavorful. He's not necessarily overpowered because wrath effects hurt a lot unless you get the right goblin, but I like that he also makes games faster with his focus on aggro.

I love graveyard play and Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord is just great. People will view him as a threat as you can nuke everyone at once, but predictable graveyard hate can often make him a glass cannon. Not as competitive as a The Mimeoplasm deck since you can't run counters, but tons of fun.

Hope some of that helps.

Phenax, God of Deception is a fun one to play with. He doesn't get hated on really, wins through milling, and is pretty fun. You can look at my deck list but I'm always changing mine so the one on right now isn't up to date. Mill, the time is now

Most fun commander deck is a good question. I have a Surrak Dragonclaw ramp deck that gets to play a lot of fun expensive guys, and I have a Dragonlord Atarka deck that ramps a lot and plays dragons. Aurelia, the Warleader is a fun general if you don't mind slow mana and no draw, but the funniest EDH deck I think I've ever seen is Ashling the Pilgrim and 99 mountains.

My favorites are Tasigur the Golden Fang and Nekusar, the Mindrazer.

Most fun deck to play that makes my opponents not hate you?

Hmmm... well.. I think, of the decks I play, that would be my token/counters deck using Vorosh, the Hunter as the commander.

The deck "hugs" with group draw and ramp, so that people will allow it to do silly giant/lots-of creatures-thing. I kinda play it all "Don't mind me. Don't mind me. Don't mi- SURPRISE TRAMPLE!"

The deck, in general, that I have the most fun with is my Maelstrom Wanderer deck. I sit down at the table with eyes all shifty, like a predator waiting to strike at the first person that moves funny. People new to the group are told, by the other members, that if they -really- do not want me doing something, then they should ask me nice to do something else. I've even had members of my group stop other people from combo-ing out, then bow the kill me. Their job is to stop people, mine is to punish them for trying.... or kill them.

I'm working on a Rakdos the Defiler deck, and it seems fun. Feldon of the Third Path or Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker allow for entire turns wasted durdling around with, say, Solemn Simulacrum triggers, and that's fun too.

Jhoira of the Ghitu as a commander and a deck full of the most unwieldy and splashy red and blue cards you've ever seen. All you have to do is politic your way to turn 8 and then the things start hitting the table. I reccomend starting with 'nice' effects that help everyone and then hard-casting the crazy stuff in time.

I've been having a blast recently with something none of my locals have ever really seen done before by theming a deck entirely around an old mechanic: United we Band.

In general i've found that just looking through cards on various sites until one catches your eye is how I get inspiration. My Jhoira deck was inspired by Omniscience and my banding deck wanted just wanted people sto stop trampling over my creatures.

Take a moment to consider what you DON'T see in your local meta and maybe try and fill the gap. The best way to get properly creative is to restrict yourself. Impose a bunch of rules on what you're building and see where that takes you.

Advertising your own decklist is not allowed. Requesting others for inspiration is perfectly fine.

I've had the most fun with Dominus - Dreamcrusher Edition, but that's probably a bad call if you don't want your opponents to hate you.

American (I guess it's called Jeskai now?) decks are quite fun because you get a bit of control, a bit of beater, and a bit of randomness.

Naya is good if you want something stompy, but flexible. Same for Jund and Grixis, but those can both go for the attrition route as well. Jund and Grixis goodstuff are a lot of fun, even if they aren't the most competitive.

You could also look through the legal commanders and find an ability you want to build around. That would give you a fairly good starting point.

If you do not want to be hated that much give Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord a try. He is playing quite slow but is super fun.

Phelddagrif probably the most not hate worthy commander in the game. Build him as group hug and you will get a good laugh out of people swinging at the person how just hit you for a few damage. Build it with a ton of fog effects and card draw and such and just hang back and let the good times roll! Most people would enjoy this deck out side of the super control decks but you cant please everybody.
