FNM 2-1-1 —Feb. 2, 2016

came in third place since my only loss was in the final round.

First round was against a rallyfenza deck. it has the melira (anafenza) combo in it along with blood artist effects and rally effects. (combo is Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit/melira, sylvoc outcast + Safehold Elite/Kitchen Finks/Murderous Redcap + Viscera Seer/Cartel Aristocrat + Blood Artist/Zulaport Cutthroat. if you have the first 3 with seer you can infinite scry for the last. if you have the red cap you dont need the last piece for kill. if you have finks you can gain infinite life without the last piece.) the deck had a bigger focus on the massive recursion and sac value of Rally the Ancestors/Return to the Ranks and Blood Artist+Viscera Seer. I won the first game easily. i misplayed and he took home game 2. game 3 went to turns and i was 1-2 turns short of a kill.

second round was against infect. now you may be thinking "no it wasn't. he said he lost in the last round and he already said his tie was in the first round." well i kid you not, i beat infect in a match. game 1 i kept a high removal hand and dropped each of his creatures in turn and kept the path clear for a Suture Priest to swing until i dropped a Hunted Phantasm. game 2 i sided in 4 Swan Song, 2 Dispel (in my current sideboard since i havent finished papering the real one) and 2 more pieces of removal. i made sure i eliminated everythreat that landed. a well timed Zealous Persecution took out 2 glade cover scouts, a Blighted Agent and an animated Inkmoth Nexus. i took him down after that. he dropped after signing off that he lost to lifegain.

third round was agianst affinity. both games i had Ghostly Prison in hand. it was too taxing on him and i took it 2-0.

lastly i played against a naya big zoo sort of deck. we both removed several of each others creatures. sadly he got to keep a few big ones and was able to take me down before i could properly set up a field for a phantasm. 0-2 against him.

deck seems to be performing well. i think with a properly finished sideboard i could have made that a 3-0-1 or at least a 3-1. for now that would be great. im still looking to improve this deck so that it can consistantly do well.

I would suggest dropping the single swamp in favor of Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth as well as perhaps resetting and archiving the old comments under the update tab, to conserv scrolling time and free up space for a new discussion.

i have a single swamp as opposed to Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth (the last suggestion before i reset the comments).is because i don't really need one. I only need one black mana at a time for the most part, maybe two depending on the hand. so turning all land into swamps is helpful, but not extremely so. It could however help my opponent color fix. i also prefer the basic swamp because if i think i'll be seeing some of the common place land hate cards like Fulminator Mage or Ghost Quarter i can protect myself by fetching my basics. i have enough basics to play any card in my deck besides hunted troll (which is a sacrifice i can make since it's a 2 of). game 2 it also could give me some lee way against a sided in blood moon or the like because now i can access Abrupt Decay (i knew that one of forest would come in handy). that and urborg is like $20 because of eldrazi black.

Do you still play this? This deck is amazing. With Twin banned, I don't foresee a lot of Torpor Orb being played any longer -- how do you think this matches up in the current meta? I'm interested in building this. lol

well from what i've played (i've slowly built it up to its paper form. i just recently got the Ghostly Prisons in so i'll admit this might be a little off), i dont know if our match ups really change. i never saw torpor orb come in from any sideboards so it doesn't bother me. twin was always a silly match up anyways since they couldn't do anything unless they killed our field first, so the twin ban doesn't really help or hurt us in the end is my guess. i'll be taking this to the GP in detriot this coming march so i'll have much more testing done after that. for now i've had good games v aggro decks. i found mid-range is an ok match up if they dont have discard. if they do have discard, they pick out the pieces we need to keep the game in our favor. i really hate discard. control is never fun. you need to get several creatures to resolve before landing a phantasm which you then need to hope resolves. basically control matches boil down to how often you can resolve Suture Priest. one thing i will note, is that you have the advantage in games 2 and 3 from the fact that no one really has/knows anything to put in against you.
