Catching up —March 8, 2014

I've continued making changes to this deck since my last logged update, but I've been lazy and haven't been tracking them. I'm going to try to sum a few of them up here.

From Theros we got 3 cards:

Read the Bones for some good old-fashioned draw. Not much to say, I love this card.

Herald of Torment a good low-cost demon with a relevant bestow. Not too shabby. The other demons in the block so far do nothing for us.

Temple of Malice As I've said about this deck, we want every 2-colour land we can get so that we keep our colours after saccing lands to Rakdos. Comes into play tapped doesn't matter. This one comes with scry 1 as a bonus.

Every two tokens you make is one less permanent you have to sacrifice... :) Krenko, Mob Boss ? xD

Hi mstancea. My first iterations of this deck went the token route, but it evolved away from that strategy as I found it hard to maintain in a multiplayer environment. Ultimately the attrition path was more effective for me. Rather than spend deck slots trying to make lots of tokens to sacrifice to Rakdos only to have my tokens constantly wrathed away, I chose to fill those slots with cards that kill as many permanents as possible so that my Rakdos swings hurt the opponent more.

Wow cool deck, nicely done.

Conspiracy would be good if you wanted to add more non-demons to the deck or keep your rat tokens alive

Hey Illumfolly, that's a nice suggestion, can't believe I didn't think of it before. I think I will dig out my copy and give it a try. Thanks!!

Rakdos was my first attempt at an edh deck i loved it sadly turned out to be to slow for mt meta game and i lost more often than not but something i did try was Skirsdag High Priest and Demonic Rising to get more demons early before u can throw out rakdos and then i used Conspiracy with karma bell and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to make all ur lands swamps make them 1/1 black creatures and make all creatures demons so now u dont sac ur lands for rakdos

Shadowborn Apostle seems like it would fit. And that first line in its effect bypasses the singleton rule for EDH.

Krulle: Neat interaction between Kormus Bell/Tomb/Conspiracy. I'd be afraid to have all of my 1/1 demon-swamps killed :P

ItchiUchiha117: I looked at the apostle and new demon, but it would become a very different deck because of how many slots I would have to dedicate. Ultimately not for me in this build.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

ya thats true but the way i see it ur gonna be sacing the bell with ur swing anyways so its just one swing with him that doesnt destroy ur land and hurts ur opponents i will admit it is hard to pull off tho i've only ever managed it oncebut i did win that game

I made a deck very similar to this. But I believe I turned it into Kalia the vast.+1 from me.

I have a Rakdos, the Defiler commander deck of my own, so I'm always thrilled to see Rakdos putting the fear into opponents. Many players scoff and assume you'll always just blindly attack into their Swords to Plowshares , and for some reason don't expect preventative measures like your LD.

I go a slightly different route, using heavy-hitting discard like Cabal Conditioning , Rakdos's Return , Mind Twist , Mind Shatter , and Myojin of Night's Reach . It neutralizes their answers, and makes it that much harder for them to recover after being defiled. Have you considered such a strategy?

Either way, good luck with it, and you've inspired me to try out Keldon Firebombers !

First off, amazing user name Pernicious_Dude. I'm going to head over and take a look at your deck.

Currently I am quite happy with how this deck runs so I don't think I will be significantly changing the strategy, but I can see heavy discard being a viable option too. It's certainly just as evil and in the spirit of big Rakdos to decimate your opponents' hands.

Glad I put you onto the Firebombers, a big Rakdos swing into a post-combat Firebombers remains my favourite play with this deck. It may actually be my favourite play across any of my decks, come to think of it.

Fleshwrither - Just play and Transfigure it. then you can grab Rakdos, Lord of Riots , Abyssal Persecutor or any other great 4 drop creature.

Phyrexian Purge -Can be used as a controlled Damnation leaving your stuff intact and balancing out the board. Might be better than Ashes to Ashes ? More boom for you buck?

Abhorrent Overlord -For sac-able harpies to the Defielers ability save some lands for a turn or so, maybe?

Desecration Demon -Its a nice Demon but I feel people would just have spare tokens (since its commander some buddy is going to have tokens) just to keep it tapped with.

Hey mymanpotsandpans, thanks for checking my deck out. I don't think Fleshwrither is what I want to be doing, but it is a sweet card. I'd be more likely to play Dimir House Guard so I could transmute for something like Grave Pact .

The reason I passed on Abhorrent Overlord is that my deck takes the opposite strategy than a lot of Defiler decks. I'm not trying to create lots of tokens to sacrifice, instead I focus on killing as many of my opponents' permanents as possible. There are demons at 7cmc that fit my strategy better than the Overlord.

I used to run Desecration Demon , but you are spot on that in Commander people always have tokens to sacrifice to him. I play multiplayer, so he was just always getting tapped down. I took him out of the deck just before he gained popularity in Standard and spiked up to $11, I was happy to trade him away.

I didn't know about Phyrexian Purge , but I really like the look of it and I will consider giving it a spin. In defense of Ashes to Ashes , its majour upside is that it exiles. My group has lots of graveyard shenanigans and I like to get things gone for good.

1) You should run Heartless Summoning. It will make your creatures significantly easier to cast, and when you swing your general you can simply sac it if you need the power to get through an opponent's defenses.

2) Halo Hunter can't destroy Sigarda, Host of Herons, she is hexproof.
