2-2 not bad —Feb. 7, 2014

I played FNM tonight and it went better than I actually had hoped! I went 2-2 with a lot of close matches

Game 1 - Lost 2-1 to Dimir Control the deck was just awful, mainboard nullify and gainsays is not something I ever expected

Game 2 - Win 2-1 played against selesnya aggro which was a tough matchup but multiple Triton Tactics got me there really quick!

Game 3 - Win 2-1 Rakdos aggro, I should not have lost a game, I played way to greedy trying to mill him out and missed him by 1 card and he swung in for lethal. Overall aggro cant go up against a bunch of huge blockers

Game 4 - Lost 2-1 Junk, It was hard to keep up with obzedat and elspeth after it got out of hand while I waited for a phenax

You should probably just run the 4 total Phenax, you know since you built your entire deck around him. Big butt creatures are only good with him on the field. Also, how can you be running mill in standard without Jace, Memory Adept ?

corythackston I already have 5 drops, I don't want to end up with hands like 2 phenax, consuming and jace like I did in playtesting some hands. The curve so far has been perfect and I do not want to throw it off

Maybe some Thoughtseize and counters like Syncopate or Psychic Strike to deal with the goddamn elixir?

Take a look at my mill deck Dimilling Control and give me your opinion too! :)

+1 mill ftw!

+1 I like it a lot!

But... I was able to get the better of it in play-testing versus my You Will Obey deck.

I would go up to 4 Crypt Incursion .

It was the only thing that could save you in my play testing if everything didn't go right.

Looks good! +1

Pithing Needle against Elixir of Immortality and any opposing planeswalkers. It's a dollar rare so pick up 3 or 4 for a future sideboard.

Really feel it is a mistake not to play Jace, Memory Adept . At least playtest with 1 or 2 of him before writing him off. If Slaughter Games names Phenax, God of Deception you will need an alternate mill win-con.

Also, I think -1 Triton Tactics and +1 Crypt Incursion .

Misread the description and didn't realize you had already playtested with Jace. Though you could try him in place of Consuming Aberration just to see how it plays out. Tough call, because they can both do some serious work.

Jace is just a lot more consistent mill than Phenax... you can't use Phenax's mill ability with himself unless he's active, and he himself mills for less than Jace does even if you can.

So this deck is the closet I've seen to mine and I like it! However as awesome as Phenax, a wall, and Triton Tactics are I think having too many walls could put dead cards in your hands. I focused my "mill section" to mostly Phenax, Consuming Aberration , Wall of Frost and nightveil spector. The rest of the deck is used to control the board until turn 5-6 when you can start getting your pieces out. So i added Thoughtseize , Hero's Downfall , Cyclonic Rift and Devour Flesh . Ashiok is fun though it just adds to the 3 drops so I'm on the fence atm.

I approve of the minimal spells that mill (aka just breaking) as I think too many times "Mill decks" become a large amount of every card that says "put cards in graveyard etc..."

Thoughts on mine : Milling, It's a Standard Thing

Love it. I wonder if you can sideboard some Mizzium Skin to protect Consuming Aberration from removal?

Could there be space made for Divination or Pilfered Plans ? With 22 lands and basically 3 key win cards, you'll want to do a bit of drawing.

one weakness might be Rest in Peace which makes consuming aberration a dead card. also don't forget about Grisly Spectacle

Be careful investing so much in one strategy, there are a LOT of answers to Phenax. Also I don't remember the last blue deck I've seen that didn't run a single counter spell. If you are determined to place all your bets on one pony I'd throw a couple cards to protect him in here.

If you do plan to add some of the other cards like MA or just even look at a different deck for some ideas. Check out my mill deck: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/devoted-to-dimir-mill-style/

I have taken the time to test it and it is void of attacking, unless it is a beefy CA.

Nubby thumb has some decent suggestions with both Jace, Memory Adept and Jace, Architect of Thought . Both are excellent Planeswalker cards, and unlike regular mill sorceries, Memory Adept's ability can be used over and over again.

As for the other cards: Returned Centaur costs way too much for its small effect, and ends up just being a waste of a card slot. Balustrade Spy might be a better choice, because it has flying and has more mill potential, but even then, I wouldn't include that card. The Entering half of Breaking / Entering also costs a little too much for its effect, especially considering the mana splash you'd have to include in order to cast it, which just overcomplicates things (not to mention it costs even more if you want to cast the Breaking half first). It's not that bad of an idea, but, in my opinion, it's not quite worth it.

Overall, since your strategy revolves around using Phenax and defender creatures, there's really not a problem with running out of cards that can mill, since Phenax makes it so nearly ALL of your cards mill. Again, the Planeswalkers are a good idea, but not necessary, and the other deck ideas are "meh."

This is a great list! Here is mine: McDonald's Happy Mill

Aggro decks will sure have a bad time dealing with those huge Defender Walls. And +1 for this too.
