More playtesting and updates, continued —April 2, 2013

I decided to drop some of the slower and more situational cards to add a major boost to my ramp package. The deck now regularly gets to turn three Damia.

Nope. Life is a resource, and you can harness a lot of power if you are willing to spend life. I have never killed myself due to my own life loss effects, although I have won many games with less than 5 life (several of these games were won at exactly 1 life).

The number of effects certainly has the potential to present problems, but those problems are often mitigated by player skill and discretion.

Whats your opinion on Mana Bloom.

Epochalyptik says... #3

It doesn't seem worthwhile. Mana dorks are more consistent and don't get returned to your hand.

An additional problem with Mana Bloom is the cost. To get any kind of longevity out of it, you need to pay a considerable amount for X. Then, you have a vulnerable enchantment that can only produce one mana per turn despite a large initial payment.

I'd just like to say, good job on this deck. I love the instant feedback you give the people asking questions, and wish you the best of luck in your Magic career. +1 from me for sure.

why Carpet of Flowers? how many Islands come up?

March 13, 2013 4:06 p.m.

Epochalyptik says... #7

Playing in a competitive pod almost guarantees that you'll go up against blue decks of some kind or another. Carpet of Flowers gives me an edge in those matchups and helps me ramp out of the range of their control.

would you be adding that instead of Burgeoning?

March 13, 2013 8 p.m.

Epochalyptik says... #9

I'm not quite sure. It will probably be tested at some point, but Carpet of Flowers is comparatively meta-dependent and slower.

What might I drop to add Mana Vault?

March 16, 2013 8:40 p.m.

SaberTech says... #11

Do you need Mana Vault? You've reduced your mana curve to the point that you don't benefit much from a large boost of colorless mana. You do have a handful of spells expensive enough that Mana Vault would help speed them out or let you leave colored mana up for counterspells, but you would not be able to reset the vault without infringing on mana for counters. You have lots of efficient mana acceleration in the deck already, so the boost that you get from Mana Vault will only be useful from time to time. Is the possible boost worth the risk of drawing a dead card?

March 16, 2013 9:14 p.m.

Potentially. Mana Vault enables a lot of spells in the early game, and I don't need to untap it after I use it. The untap ability is nice, but it isn't really necessary every time. I think I would rather have Mana Vault than Gilded Lotus, to be honest.

March 16, 2013 9:23 p.m.

SaberTech says... #13

Gilded Lotus has become somewhat expensive for your decks general game plan, even if the colored man it gives you is nice. Would you use a first turn Mana Vault to cast Damia, Sage of Stone turn four or would you wait until you could defend her better?

March 16, 2013 9:50 p.m.

Control is very situational, so it is almost impossible to give a solid answer to a general question. However, I usually find myself playing Damia as soon as my ramp gives me the luxury. If she survives the turn cycle, I replenish all the resources I used for the early cast. Ideally, I'd be holding a counterspell the entire time, but each game presents a different situation and therefore a different amount of leniency.

March 16, 2013 11:17 p.m.

SaberTech says... #15

Then it may be worth trading Gilded Lotus out for Mana Vault. I've played with control players who would refuse to play a mana intensive card engine like Damia without some way to protect her the same turn. The largest benefit that Mana Vault offers you is the chance at an early Damia so if that's an open game plan for you then you're probably right about switching it in.

sorry if i have somebody has already suggested this, but would Cruel Tutor be a good tutor for this deck?

March 17, 2013 2:47 p.m.

I would rather play Grim Tutor in this list. I can only really afford tutors that put cards on top of my library if they're instant speed and/or very cheap to cast. A 3-drop sorcery that puts the card on top is too slow.

take out Time Stretch for Time Warpand take out Arbor Elf for Tezzeret the Seeker

March 17, 2013 8:10 p.m.

I've been thinking about swapping Time Stretch for a cheaper spell, but I would go with Temporal Manipulation before Time Warp. The former can't be redirected.

Tezzeret the Seeker doesn't fit the curve of this deck. He's a bit too slow and expensive to really shine, even though his abilities are good.

March 17, 2013 9:04 p.m.

Maybe take out Rhystic Study for one of the cards in your maybeboard? It isnt a bad enchantment, but in my experience Rhystic Study doesn't net enough cards to be that useful.

March 18, 2013 9:29 a.m.

My friend cut Rhystic Study from his variant of this list for essentially that reason. While it's a good card, it costs 3 and often only serves as a tax effect. What would I add, though?

March 18, 2013 12:17 p.m.

SaberTech says... #22

Grim Tutor is the same converted mana cost and casting speed as Rhystic Study, so you aren't affecting much with that switch. The Pongify might be another card to consider though. I think that the deck's removal package is a little sparse and it wouldn't hurt to have another quick answer. You already have a decent amount of tutoring at this point, so I think I would push my vote a little further towards the Pongify.

how is Palinchron and Phantasmal Image a infinate combo?

March 19, 2013 9:43 p.m.

miracleHat says... #24

you play Palinchron then you copy it with Phantasmal Image and so you untap up to 7 lands with the copy, then you bounce Phantasmal Image copying Palinchron and replay it untaping the lands again slowly getting 1 mana at a time. i think that it is that way and if it isn't i will feel very stupid.

March 19, 2013 9:50 p.m.

That's exactly how it works. It costs 6 mana to play and bounce the Phantasmal Image copy of Palinchron, and you untap 7 lands each time, so those two go infinite together.
