Finally got some more playtesting done —Feb. 9, 2013

I had the opportunity today to play a couple games with this deck, and I also spent a good deal of time speaking with its codesigner. He has opted to drop many of the expensive counterspells and ramp cards in favor of their faster counterparts. He also runs a few mana dorks - a choice with which I don't necessarily agree. However, I more frequently play in multiplayer pods, so I face a higher risk of playing against sweepers.

I cut the filter lands for basics because, after talking with my friend, I realized they weren't always optimal. Running two of each basic allows me to squeeze a few extra uses out of my fetches. I also upgraded the basics into snow-covered basics in case I run into anyone using snow lands any Extraplanar Lens.

Finally, I dropped Survival of the Fittest for Lotus Cobra. I don't run enough creatures for Survival of the Fittest to really do what I need it to do, and Lotus Cobra is stupid with nine fetches, Nature's Lore, Skyshoud Claim, and three Exploration effects.

I'm considering dropping

  • Mana Web - It's limited in application, and completely irrelevant in some games.
  • Bribery - It's great when it works, but there have been many games where I didn't even cast it.
  • Mystic Snake - It has a good interaction with Deadeye Navigator, but I rarely play Deadeye Navigator outside of my combo, and Mystic Snake itself ends up being little more than an expensive counterspell.
  • Cryptic Command - Although I like Cryptic Command as a card, it's prohibitively expensive for a deck that wants to ramp and control as much as possible.
  • Fact or Fiction - I like the instant-speed card advantage, but I often find the mana cost inconvenient.
  • Leyline of Anticipation - I'm on the fence about this one. It's great to have on the field from turn 0, but it's inconvenient to cast if I ever draw it.

On a related note the reason that popped into my head was you said "...precious blue mana..." and I'm playing LEGO LOTR on steam...

Also, classy Epoch.

I should get mine altered. I'm not sure which edition I'd prefer though. I also want to get my Top altered into a seasonal/weather scene or maybe a GURU Top.

What are everyone's thoughts on using Cephalid Coliseum ?

I love Coliseum. Because it comes in untapped, rarely is it a dead draw. The one damage has yet to be relevant for me either.

My one concern is how often do you have the threshold? I've tested a few threshold cards and I've found that it can be quite difficult to actually have the 7 cards. Keep in mind though that I've never ha the dredge mechanic to pair with it either. If you have threshold within a turn 7 timeframe then I'd say it's worth it. If it takes you forever to get there then I'd leave it out.

i agree with Ohthenoises, getting the threshold could be pretty difficult. nice divining top picture.

Pros:

Comes in untapped

Taps for blue

Cons:

Utility ability requires threshold

Can't be fetched by land type

I'm thinking I might replace my basic swamp with Cephalid Coliseum .

I'm looking at this as if someone Ghost Quarter 's you or Path to Exile 's you then you have less of a chance to get a basic. Add to that your massive draw and the chances of you being able to land (hue hue hue) that land are pretty slim.

Like I said, how often do you have threshold before turn 7? (When I'm guessing is about when you want to be combo-ing out IIRC.)

December 13, 2012 8:01 p.m.

I usually try to combo as soon as I can; turn 5 or 6 isn't uncommon.

However, with all the fetch lands, tutors, and ramp spells, my graveyard can potentially hit threshold quickly. It's not something that happens every game, though.

I don't think I've ever seen a Ghost Quarter played in any of my games, and Path to Exile rarely gets cast or resolved against me. However, I understand the idea.

Then it's worth it for you. For me? Not so much but if you can get threshold in the first few turns I'd say you're good to go. Nice thing is, if you sac it then Crucible of Worlds it back into play you get another go because it actually pumps your grave. Only thing that worries me there is GY hate. (That's why I love this game, there are answers for everything in almost every color for EDH.)

i wouldn't put it in for a swamp, i would put it in for an Island . and with Crucible of Worlds , it would be awesome!

December 13, 2012 9:45 p.m.

Islands are more important than swamps.

Big fan of the old school lands.. undergroud sea :D Cool deck.

Two things:

How's testing on Cephalid Coliseum going? The card is working fantastically for me.

And how effective is card:Sensei's Divining Top for you? There's a lot of dislike from the Damia players on that card being in a Damia deck just because it becomes well, not that useful.

December 26, 2012 3:25 a.m.

I haven't yet had a chance to test Cephalid Coliseum , unfortunately.

card:Sensei's Divining Top works well. I can't imagine the player who says it doesn't. Especially at the high level of competition, where Damia is usually an insta-win if she survives, Top allows me to stabilize on the first few turns. With nine fetches and plenty of tutors, Top is even more useful. I can sift through a lot of cards per turn to find the best ones available in the given situation.

I think a lot of the players who don't like Top are probably not using Damia in a hypercompetitive environment. They are likely used to Damia sticking around and not winning the game immediately, so they find Top to be obsolete once she's up and running.

December 26, 2012 3:40 a.m.

I completely understand. In what I'm playing I'm only seeing Damia live to the end of a turn if I'm lucky, so I end up resorting to flashing her in on the end of an opponent's turn.

December 26, 2012 7:16 a.m.

That's typically what I do. I don't tie up seven mana in her if I can't flashcast her. It's a waste of mana that could be left open for countermagic.

December 26, 2012 7:28 a.m.

I completely agree. At least I know I'm doing it right. Ha.

about the cephalid coleseum, take back what i said about the getting to the threshold, it is actually quite easy with this deck i found out!

December 26, 2012 9:58 p.m.

miracleHat says... #22

why card:Nature's Lore? isn't Farseek better?

December 27, 2012 1:07 p.m.

Farseek can find any of my duals, but it forces whatever I fetch to come in tapped.

December 27, 2012 6:13 p.m.

miracleHat says... #24

oh, didn't realize that natures lore is untapped.

December 27, 2012 7:43 p.m.

Yep, same as Skyshroud Claim . That's why they're so good in EDH. They can find duals and bring them in untapped so you still have mana to work with after casting a ramp spell. It's especially useful to find a UG dual so you can ramp directly into countermagic for the turn cycle.
