Cryptic Serpent Deck

Standard UR (Izzet)

Deck that plays giant threats like cryptic serpent and enigma drake. Drops green because I think Deeproot champion is a bad card. It needs to stay out for a large number of turns and when in top deck mode it will be a 1/1.

Trying out u/r with cryptic serpent, enigma drake, and soul-scar mage left me feeling that soul-scar mage is just too small to win the game. This is the type of deck where your creatures need to be the biggest around.

We took out the mages and tried various other cards for the last threat: glorybringer, kefnet, hazoret, confiscation coup/kefnet's last word. Glorybringer was my favorite, as he did the best job of filling the roll of giant monster that outclasses anything else around, and he's particularly good at dealing with planeswalkers.

With the big monsters, I've found shock to just be too bad. It can kill a cub on turn 2, but literally every other card in the energy deck will get plenty of value before being shocked.

the incredible grind of the energy deck provides too much card advantage for one for one removal to keep up with

Solution: go big. Hour of devastation and sweltering suns are both good at clearing all the tiny dudes that get incremental value. Up the land count and run fewer spells overall (we were running 20 lands, 10 creatures and 30 spells before)

Similarly, we add the great grindy card of Search for Azcanta to help provide more value in long games. The previous build with all the burn left us out of gas in the late game. Azcanta almost singlehandedly fixes that.
