Modern FNM (9th place) — July 21, 2017 —July 22, 2017

I was finally able to get back to an FNM, and what a blast it was! 9th Place out of 24 players.

  • Round 1: 2-0 vs. Esper Control

Because mainboard enchantment removal is scarce in modern, counterspells and hand disruption are obviously the best answers to Seismic Assault. This deck I faced did have a few of both, but not enough to keep Assault from landing both games. From there, once I found Life from the Loam, I was able to handily grind it out.

  • Round 2: 0-2 vs. Affinity

Etched Champion and double Cranial Plate got me game one. Game two, after about five turns, I was able to play enough removal to reduce my opponent's board to nothing but a Darksteel Citadel and a Spire of Industry, while I had an active Tireless Tracker and four cards in hand. This, however, did not make up for them playing three Galvanic Blasts and a topdecked Shrapnel Blast to the face during the course of the game.

  • Round 3: 2-1 vs. Goblins

I wouldn't have thought that this was a good matchup for me, but I landed an Assault in games one and three, which kept his creatures at bay. Courser of Kruphix also did work here. I lost game two by not playing conservatively enough and tapping out, dying to two haste creatures.

  • Round 4: 1-2 vs. R/W Burn

Most of my weakest matchups do seem to be games in which I cannot effectively interact with my opponent. Game one, I was blitzed by two Goblin Guides and a Monastery Swiftspear while being on a mull to five. Game two, I played a T2 Courser, eating some of his gas, and at 6 life managed to combo off, killing him. Game three, I was on the draw, and died very quickly to another stupendous draw from my opponent.

  • Round 5: 2-0 vs. U/R Gifts Storm!

I thought I was dead, going into this matchup! In game one, I constantly was able to burn out his Goblin Electromancers and Baral, Chief of Compliance, depriving him of the mana he needed for storm. Game two...wow. One of the most intense games of Magic I've played in recent memory. Being on the draw, I was saved by playing a T2 Assault, after which he killed my Birds of Paradise. I was forced to discard every land I drew, while he played Gifts Ungiven to find what he needed. I ended up drawing Dakmor Salvage, which allowed me to constantly draw a land each turn, while still digging for Life from the Loam. One of my MVP cards for this game turned out to be Raven's Crime (thanks a ton, skoobysnackz!!), which I used to cripple my opponent's hand.

I Learned a ton about this deck again, tonight! It looks like I need to make the following changes:
