End of the Year Modern 1K —Dec. 23, 2017

So I had high hopes for this event.
I faced Jeskai Through the Breach round one and literally had no chance. I didn't find my discard spells and turns 1-5 I couldn't stick anything on the board. He Through the Breached Emrakul and that was game. Game 2 was pretty much identical.

Round 2 I was still thinking positive hat I could finish 3-1. I played Bant Knightfall and held a pretty good game. Game one he hit his combo and game two I took with ease. Game three was pretty low action on both sides. I made a bad choice with Thoughtseize taking Courser of Kruphix instead of Retreat to Coralhelm. That decision came back to haunt me. I also, cracked my Nihil Spellbomb a few turns before he went off. "That's the first timed I've hit the combo twice in one round." -_- Thanks.

Round 3 I literally didn't have time to get to the front counter and drop out so Round 3 was game on. I had to win something.
I played Abzan Company. One of the matches I had tuned my deck for. Game 1 turn 2 Grafdigger's Cage. Man that felt good. We traded back and forth games 1 and 2. Game 3 was a blow-out. I had so much removal that game and he just couldn't stick anything on the board. He was Junded.

Finally.

Round 4: Standings went up and I was in 9th. Prizes went to Top 8 (A mere 16 people showed up so it wasn't great. But still...).I sat down for the final round before Top 8 and Turn one thoughtseize reveals Jeskai Through the Breach. He got there by Turn 6 or 7 and I scooped them up and went home.

It was a learning experience for sure but all in all I went 1-3 for the day. A lousy showing for this deck. I will be back to FNM for a while and I will put an update out when I have some more data to see if Jund can be salvaged in the current meta. I have some ideas up my sleeve that might make it work.

Great write up, man. I love the details, and yeah, fatigue has gotten all of us at one point or another. Hollow one zoo is absolutely a thing, though there a few different iterations of it. Keep up the good works, bud, and may all your ranges be mid.

the Competitive scale doesn't mean anything at all, actually.

but i'm gonna +1 it simply because Jund rules all.

Chasmolinker says... #4

Both of those statements are true. Lol

Chasmolinker says... #5

However, the deck is very competitive and holds its own in the current meta

shinobigarth says... #6

im sure it does. sadly i dont have a couple month's rent worth of money to drop on it.

I've been running more or less the same list but with hazoret in the main instead of kalitas. i really prefer hazoret at this point. either way, nice list!

I'm a big fan of the list, besides the Rabblemasters, I'd probably swap them out for a third Scavenging Ooze and a Kitchen Finks or Tireless Tracker, but that's just personal preference. Also, any particular reason for no Collective Brutality in the main? I usually run one where you would have the Maelstrom Pulse, how has that performed for you? I'd want two Collective Brutality in the 75, and probably just one Maelstrom Pulse

scrotality: Hazoret seems good. I will probably pick up some after it rotates from standard. I like Kalitas for the aggro decks. Plus the life gain can be crucial late game.

supermill: I haven't tried Collective Brutality main board. I will have to give it a go. I have noticed most lists only run one Maelstrom Pulse. Rabblemaster has an extremely fast clock. I wanted to eliminate the slow grindy cards like Tireless Tracker. Although a third Scavenging Ooze would probably be good.

Rabblemaster is an insane clock. i wouldn't take that out at all. i think 2x of those is great. finks is too slow in my opinion. although 1 brutality main is really nice. does wonders against burn :D also to be completely honest, i think Scavenging Ooze is the most powerful card in jund. i never run less than 3

December 18, 2017 4:48 p.m.

So why 3 of each Thoughtsieze and Inquisition? I usually see a 4 of IoK and 2 Thoughtsieze.

December 18, 2017 5:59 p.m.

Chasmolinker says... #13

I had 4 IoK and 2 Thoughtseize. I went with 3 & 3 to better my match-up against combo and CoCo. Theres been times where I wished I had the opposite of whatever I was holding but I think the 3/3 split is where I want to be for now.

I miss the days where this was the only deck I had to worry about when playing Bogles. Any reason why you're not running Liliana, the Last Hope?

December 19, 2017 2:25 a.m.

Chasmolinker says... #15

I had Liliana, the Last Hope in the main but have recently moved her to the sideboard for small creature decks and grindy match-ups. I wanted to increase the amount of removal spells I had in the deck. Lightning Bolt took her spot for now as I really needed it to close out some close games.

Thank You Tethys! I am currently working out my sideboard cheat sheet for a Modern 1k tomorrow.

December 22, 2017 11:31 a.m.

I'd definitely like to see you post how this does at the tourney

Certainly will.

Any Sideboarding suggestions from anyone??
I'm expecting to see the following decks: Grixis Shadow, Merfolk, Esper Mill, UR Storm, Affinity, BW Tokens, Abzan Company, and Burn. Maybe a Rakdos Hollow One if the guy shows up.

Not sure if Eldrazi Tron will make an appearance.

Chasmolinker says... #21

I think I may put a Grafdigger's Cage main board.

December 22, 2017 11:41 a.m.

Chasmolinker says... #22

Any thoughts on Hellrider over Olivia Voldaren in the side board?

December 22, 2017 7:34 p.m.

I like Olivia,

Hell rider seems cool what matchups would you use him in?

December 22, 2017 8:06 p.m.

Tethys says... #24

If you are actually going to mainboard graveyard hate for the tournament, I would strongly suggest using something you can cantrip; in this case Nihil Spellbomb. Otherwise, the loss of card advantage in matchups in which Grafdigger's Cage is not relevant will hurt you more then help I would think.

Replace dark confident with sylvan library because then you can get the cards you want and do not have to take damage to get extra cards but you have the option to
