SCORE: 1 | 609 VIEWS | IN 1 FOLDER

FNM —Aug. 7, 2015

Result: 3-1

Deck felt good overall. Taking out Deflecting Palm from side and replacing it with Valorous Stance. The only circumstance that Deflecting Palm is better is against Stormbreath Dragon but in every other circumstance Valorous Stance is better.

Played against Mono-Red Aggro, G/R Devotion, Jeskai Control, and Sultai Control.

Sideboard:

Mono-Red Aggro-Victory in 3

-4 Monastery Swiftspear, -4 Abbot of Keral Keep, +4 Anger of the Gods, +4 Surge of Righteousness

G/R Devotion-Victory in 3

-4 Monastery Swiftspear, -4 Abbot of Keral Keep, -2 Searing Blood, +4 Anger of the Gods, +2 End Hostilities, +2 Deflecting Palm, +2 Surge of Righteousness

Jeskai Control-Defeat in 3

-4 Searing Blood, +2 Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip, +2 Deflecting Palm

Sultai Control-Victory in 3

-2 Soulfire Grand Master, +2 Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip

Conclusions:

There was no U/R Scissor decks that showed up which was good because I basically didn't have a sideboard against them except my sole copy of Smash to Smithereens which I'm going to rethink. Erase would probably be more useful there.

The Mono-Red Aggro match-up went exactly how I thought it would which was good news. He was able to sneak a win game 2 but games 1 and 3 weren't even close. Surge of Rightousness was amazing and boarding out my creatures left him with dead Searing Bloods in his hand. Outpost Seige is obviously the most important card in the match-up and once it's down is very hard for your opponent to win. I only ever play Soulfire Grand Master if I have enough mana to also cast a burn spell that I can play the same turn so when they burn it I can in response burn one of their creatures or go at there life total to gain some life while also spending one of their cards. And if she is allowed to live then the game isn't even close.

G/R Devotion proved as annoying a match-up as ever and they were some of the closest games I'd had in a while. Valorous Stance is always going to be better than Deflecting Palm so I'm making a switch there. I put in Surge of Righteousness because it was my only way of dealing with Dragonlord Atarka. Game 3 he got me to 1 life and I came back the next turn putting Soulfire Grand Master out and playing Searing Blood copied with Pyromancer's Goggles on two satyr tokens made by Xenagos, the Reveler killing the 3 loyalty Planewalker by redirecting one of the Searing Blood's damage to it and doing three to my opponent with the other copy and healing 10 life because of Soulfire Grand Master. I finished that game with 35 life.

Jeskai Control was the match I lost. Game 1 was a very quick win and game 2 was looking to end the same way and I got him to 1 life but I messed up giving him the wrong cards on one of his Steam Augurys and he was able to burn me from a surprisingly high life total with a combination of Jeskai Charms and Lightning Strikes. Game 3 was interesting to me. Games 1 and 2 he didn't play any tokens, but game 3 he dropped Dragon Fodder turn 2 and Hordeling Outburst turn 3 followed by a Jeskai Ascendancy turn 4. I knew I'd lost when he played the Hordeling Outburst. 5 tokens was going to be way too much for me to be able to plow through. After talking to him after the match he confirmed my suspicions that the token plan was all in his sideboard. The thing that's weird to me is why he didn't change to it game 2. It was such a close game 2 that the match could have easily been a 2-0 victory for me (especially if I was a better player). But alas, he decided to gamble game 2 and then sideboard for game 3 leaving me blind to his plan on the game that mattered most. Pretty smart, very risky.

Sultai Control is a good match-up for my deck. There is never a point where the control player feels safe that they've stabilized. I lost game 2, but in that game he had to Silence the Believers his own Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip to keep himself from dying. I thought it was pretty funny.

The last game in the G/R Devotion match I had all 3 Pyromancer's Goggles in my hand. That was rough. Still managed to win off of the back of End Hostilities but it was super close. Part of me thinks that I should put the number to 2 copies, but I don't know I very rarely see multiples. I'm really enjoying the deck still, and it's a blast to play.
