I'd bend the knee, but I took an arrow to it while I was out adventuring.

  • jaymc1130, couldn't keep yourself from referencing that old meme, huh? LOL.

  • ThousandOaks, I like the concept of the deck- politics at it's best. However the deck name bothers me...you're royalty - it should be Bend thy Knee not...Bend the Knee. It sounds pedestrian. Yes, that's my first suggestion for the deck- I wasn't joking. On a more serious note, your lack of a deck description is an issue- what are the notable cards/combos in the deck? Here's a resource that can help you write a deck description: Epochalyptik's Do you want to write a Primer?

jaymc1130 and LVL_666 thanks for the upvotes and feedback!

I took some time this afternoon to flesh out our deck a little bit. And LVL_666, you're definitely right! Bend Thy Knee is much more on point!

@ LVL_666

No, no I could not. That title change suggestion is hella on point. Pure perfection.

I feel like you need to include more of the Friend or Foe cards from Battlebond. They all include fun choices and are actually pretty powerful in some situations.

SirPercival23. Thanks for reaching out. Originally, we had all of them in the deck. But ultimately as we pared down to 100 cards, most were removed in favor of vote cards.

Personally, I really enjoyed the friend/for mechanics, so I'll take a look a adding them all back in.

ThousandOaks, question - what's the "Fat Guy" deck series? I gave your deck description a read and it's awesome! Thank you for writing that! Now I feel like your deck page is much closer to completion, however you're still missing a vital element: Your hubs:

"You can choose labels, or "hubs," for your deck from a link at the top of your deck's page. A hub is essentially a mini cycle queue for a certain type of deck. Deck hubs are also like tags; they allow people to find your deck by searching the appropriate hub, where it will be displayed among other decks of the same type. By tagging your deck with the appropriate hubs, you also ensure that whenever you deckcyle that deck it will also appear at the top of that hub's listings."

So, what hubs do I think your deck belongs in?

  • Group Hug
  • Casual
  • Five Color
  • Multiplayer
  • Theme/Gimmick

Just to name a few. Hubs are entirely subjective on what the author thinks, but you're doing your fine deck a disservice by not circulating it in more hubs. Also, i'm glad you went with the name change- now you can use that as a line to intimidate players into bending to your will. If you want to play the "Cruel Despot" persona at the table lol. If I think of any cards to suggest, i'll definitely post them up. Again, great work on your deck page!

LVL_666 Thanks! Hubs added!

Fat Guy Gaming is a small start up in our area. It is comprised of a few MTG players that really love the Local Game Store scene. Our mission is to support our local LGSs and the players in our area. We streamline event management for stores, and we really just talk and play with other players.

Because we are heavily involved in our LGSs, we released our first deck primer Forbidden Justu - Dragon Reanimation! at the request of local players. It went very well, so we decided that we'd try to do a monthly primer (after Throne of Eldraine launches).

This month, an LGS asked for a Kenrith, the Returned King list. After piloting the deck (and after your suggestion), I decided this list was a good candidate for this month's primer. I'm a little biased though, because I was dying to build Kenrith once he was spoiled. :-)

This deck looks like a lot of fun! Is there a reason for including Rule of Law ? That card seem counter intuitive to the theme of the deck.

ThousandOaks says... #11

Enral Thanks for the question. We included Arcane Laboratory and Rule of Law to stall the board, and to prevent combo decks from going off. When players combo out, it kind of goes against the theme of ensuring everyone had fun.

I think cards like Mandate of Peace , Containment Priest , and Rakdos Charm are better cards to stop combo (rather than Rule of Law ) while letting other players have fun. Also, most of the infinite combos in EDH doesn't require "casting" spells and are often infinite reiterations of an activated ability loop (walking balista/mike etc.) so it doesn't really stop them from going off. Most combo decks also basically save their removal till the turn they go off so having that card doesn't really achieve anything other than feel bads. From my personal experience, rule of law effects often draw unnecessary negative attention towards me since players often want to play multiple spells a turn in EDH. Unless this is a dedicated stax build, I just don't think it is worth it. Just my 2 cents.

Enral Thanks for the feedback! I definitely think you're right. Late game, Rule of Law draws more hate. Early game it has it's purpose, but it'll be a dead draw later in the game. I appreciate the food for thought!

ThousandOaks, after seeing your inclusion of Fellwar Stone , and with the recent release of the new Throne of Eldrane Brawl Decks have you considered swapping the previously mentioned for the "strictly better" option? Of course I'm talking about the one and only Arcane Signet .

ThousandOaks says... #15

LVL_666 Absolutely! Once I get my hands on one of the brawl decks, Arcane Signet will replace the Fellwar Stone.

gradstudent, like any good student you should show your work. Why is Deafening Silence better than Rule of Law ?

what is the power artifact for? yes infinite mana but is there a combo payoff card with that infinite mana? like a blue sun?

January 2, 2020 5:40 p.m.

ThousandOaks says... #20

gradstudent, thanks for the question. Yes, with infinite mana and a blue source (mana dorks, rocks, treasure tokens), Kenrith can mill out decks with the draw ability.

January 6, 2020 11:35 p.m.

gradstudent says... #21

thanks I think I was referring to specifically infinite colorless, I see the mana dorks and rocks, treasures, but lets say you have finite blue, is there another way to turn this infinite colorless mana with power artifact into a win like a pili pala

January 9, 2020 8:55 p.m.

ThousandOaks says... #22

gradstudent, point taken. There isn't an outlet for infinite colorless. I did think of running Walking Ballista for this purpose, and it has pretty good synergy with Kenrith already.

At the same time, I am thinking of taking out Power Artifact all together (as well as the other competitive cards).

The deck is still undefeated, but now with the competitive adjustments, it doesn't seem like a fun deck to play against for our opponents. And that, was the primary purpose we built the deck.

I love the philosophy behind this deck! I love the social aspect of Commander above all else, and Kenrith seems right up my alley. I know that some people only see him as a super competitive combo commander, and I think it's really unfortunate because he sounds way more fun as a political commander!

I'm building Kenrith soon thanks to this little challenge among my playgroup. We all chose commanders at random to build around, and I got Kenrith (Super lucky if you ask me!). We have a $100 price limit, and I'm going to leave out any infinites and lean more heavily into the politics aspect and making deals with people around the table.

Someone missing land drops? I'll draw them a couple extra cards so they can find the land they need. Someone killed a creature? For the price of friendship, I'd be glad to bring it back, and even make it bigger or give it haste. I'm starting to fall in love with the versatility and flexibility of Kenrith, and I'm definitely going to look here for some inspiration!

Like you said, if I win, awesome. If I lose, at least I made an impact at the table and everyone got to do their thing. I'm the most happy when everyone's decks are going off and are able to do what they're supposed to do, and Kenrith will help me facilitate a fun, interactive game that everyone can walk away happy from.

CaptCreek, that's awesome to hear! Yes, Kenrith is definitely one of the most fun commanders in the game if you ask me. $100 goes a long with Kenrith.

I think the only real thing to focus on in terms of budget is getting those cards in the Ability Enabler section. Of course, the new Zirda, the Dawnwaker makes a great budget replacement for Training Grounds.

ThousandOaks,

Absolutely, I've already got a rough list together if you want to check it out and maybe drop a comment with some feedback! Kenrith's Campaign.

I'm really excited to put the deck together, looks like he's gonna be a blast to play. Only slightly worried about the reaction playing him will give, but my playgroup knows my play style so I'm sure they'll cut me a little slack.
