Sakashima of a Thousand Faces

Legendary Creature — Human Rogue

You may have Sakashima of a Thousand Faces enter the battlefield as a copy of another creature you control, except it has Sakashima of a Thousand Faces' other abilities.

The "legend rule" doesn't apply to permanents you control.

Partner (You can have two commanders if both have partner.)

Polaris on Volo, guide to monsters and …

This doesn't work the way you hope, for two reasons.

To start with, yes, you can absolutely do this. You cast Mirror Image, which has the type Shapeshifter. This triggers Volo, Guide to Monsters if you don't have any Shapeshifters in play or in your graveyard, copying the spell. If no one responds, you'll respond the copied Mirror Image, which will create a token Mirror Image that can enter as a copy of any creature you control, then the original spell will resolve and Mirror Image will enter (again, can enter as a copy).

On the battlefield, the Mirror Images will be whatever they copied, and will therefore enter as something other than Shapeshifters unless you decided for some reason not to copy anything. This doesn't matter to Volo, because he triggers when the spell is cast, not when the spell resolves and the creature enters the battlefield.

With all that said, here are the two issues:

First, Volo triggers only on cast. Having a second Volo when your Mirror Image original (not the copy) enters won't do anything because it's not being cast, it's entering the battlefield. This would only work if you already had two Volos when you cast Mirror Image.

Second, however, Volo is a legendary creature. If at any point you control two legendary creatures with the same name, you must sacrifice all but one of them as a state-based action. At the moment Mirror Image enters as Volo, you will have two copies of Volo (and this could potentially trigger enters-the-battlefield abilities of something), but immediately after that, before anyone can respond or anything can resolve, you will have to pick one Volo and sacrifice the rest of them.

The only way around this kind of thing is a clone like Spark Double, which can copy legendary creatures without issue because it removes the legendary typing when it copies something, or another way around the legend rule like Mirror Gallery or Sakashima of a Thousand Faces.

Crow_Umbra on Neon Light Speed [Primer]

Thank you for the kind words & suggestions NV_1980, I appreciate them. Writing primers is fun for me, so I appreciate it when folks take the time to read them. I'm currently applying around for jobs & trying some career pivots. I submitted some of my primers along with samples of my more professional/technical stuff as writing samples for a couple of apps.

I hadn't really considered either of those cards for this deck, but I've really enjoyed the work that Sakashima of a Thousand Faces puts in for my Satya deck. I might have a 2nd Sakashima copy in my binders, & definitely have a Roaming Throne proxy around. I'll look into a potential swap for one of them.

Your decks are always amazing Crow_Umbra, I enjoy reading them and this one doesn't disappoint either :)

Since you said in your description that "Remember to go fast, we're on a Time Limit", would it make sense to include stuff that would allow for the generation of more dragons via Goro-Goro and Satoru? I'm talking cards that could copy them (like Sakashima of a Thousand Faces) or maybe copy their triggered abilities (like Roaming Throne).

Cheers.

DreadKhan on Xyris the snake God needs …

I've never built Xyris, but I kinda wonder if you wouldn't want to copy Xyris? It's not easy to do because he's Legendary obviously, but there are a few ways now, and IMHO if you can manage to have 2 or 3 Xyris' swinging away they each see one another. Some obvious ways to copy Xyris include Sakashima of a Thousand Faces and Mirror Gallery type effects, along with various copy effects (there are tons in your colours). If this seems interesting I could look around and see if I can find anything relevant?

Be'lakor also works really well with copies, so I recommend Spark Double and Sakashima of a Thousand Faces

Star Whale is good, but Sakashima of a Thousand Faces is a favorite of mine

May 3, 2024, I started a new quest. Having built 52 decks, I endeavoured to play them all, in roughly the same order as I created them. July 26

Everybody Hates Zedruu Won, record goes to 17 - 22 -1.Thieves' Auction let me draw 17ish cards with Zedruu over a couple turns. Drew into Felidar Guardian and Saheeli Rai after a couple turns. Well, that wins the game. Had Gift of Immortality plus Tragic Arrogance, which killed 2 of Mira's Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and Detention Sphere got the remaining Sakashima of a Thousand Faces "Ulamog." Win percentage goes to .436

KrarkTheThumb on Copying with Krark and Sakashima

When I cast a spell while Krark, the Thumbless and Sakashima of a Thousand Faces (as a copy of Krark) are out on the battlefield i get two triggers of flipping a coin and potentially copying the spell. If I succeeded in calling the flip for the first trigger and I loose the flip for the second trigger would the spell still go back to my hand? If so why?
