Commander 2017: getting ahead of the market

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

So I've already pre-ordered the four Commander 2017 decks. My biggest concern is the cards that are NOT in the set. Should I buy cards like Pride Sovereign Captivating Vampire or any of the Dragon Lords before release? I'm worried that if I wait, then it'll be too late to buy them on the cheap. Please let me know which cards you think I should buy first.

Well the card you should definitely get is Mana Echoes before the release. That already is starting to spike.

Unless they reprint it

Actually, I've had that card since I pulled it from a pack of Onslaught 13 years ago. So, no worries there. It's mostly any of the past Vampire, Cat, or Dragon cards that I'm worried about. Also, some Sorin and Ajani planeswalkers.

Likely not being reprinted.. and also maybe sad I sold my copy. But my new practice is to avoid any card that is $5+ that didn't come included with a pre-con commander deck.

It's probably a safe bet that anything that is currently in standard won't be included in these sets, since they usually have different design teams and are made around the same time, so yes, you should probably pick up a copy of Pride Sovereign and Regal Caracal since I can almost guarantee you that they're not going to be in there. In the same line, commander products rarely contain planeswalkers, so picking up copies of nearly any of the Sorin or Ajani walkers is possibly a safe hit. I suspect if they were to put any one planeswalker in this set it would be Sorin, Lord of Innistrad, as he was printed far back enough to warrant a reprint and best fits his tribe out of any of the other candidates.

As far as Captivating Vampire goes, I have absolutely no clue. Since The Ur-Dragon already gives you a cost reduction on dragons, I suspect Dragonspeaker Shaman may not be included, but I feel that Dragonlord's Servant will be taking its place, due to most of the dragons only being 2/3 generic mana in addition to the colored mana. Just a hunch though. I also have a rather large itch in my side telling me that they won't be including Utvara Hellkite, as it may be a little too much for a pre-con environment. That thing with the already spoiled Scourge of Valkas closes out games very quickly if they aren't answered. Speaking of Scourge, since it was spoiled, it probably means they aren't going to be putting Dragon Tempest in the deck, as a redundant Scourge also ends games very quickly.

Super speculations glasses off, what we really need to be stocking up on is Chaospheres and Mystic Decrees, thar be dragons and vampires heading this way! (And I guess Maze of Ith for the cats with shiny things tapped to their backs...) You distract them while I'm over here shoving nonsense into this cage of mine...

Seek out lords.

Lords that aren't coming back will spike for a bit. My hunch though is that the prices will even out again once people get over the hype.

Long story short after they have been out for a while there aren't a ton of folks that will keep their tribal decks around unless they fell in love with one of the eminence commanders.

If its one of the other commanders there are better ways to build them than tribal you know what I mean?

Cloudstone Curio is another card that is very useful in the wizard and the vampire decks since their commander wants cards cast. So that could see a small spike. The full lists hit today I believe so we will have a better idea of what was left out.

Well, I see they reprinted Dragonspeaker Shaman, so that settles that.

They also put in both Utvara Hellkite and Scourge of Valkas.

Dragon Broodmother might be worth a look... Also they DIDN'T reprint Prismatic Omen so that will keep going up.

Reprints seem to be, at max, around the $5 range unless i missed one.

Mirari's Wake is between 10 and 15 bucks depending on which set.

Was it revealed as a reprint, LittleBlueHero ?

August 11, 2017 11:37 a.m.

Yep in the Cat deck.

Yeah but in a couple months the reprints will likely devalue all the previous printings and drop in price themselves. That's what has happened previously with similarly priced cards getting reprinted.

Wow, thank you guys so much for the feedback back! I'll definitely be picking up the Pride Sovereign and the Dragon Lords. And I'll get a Captivating Vampire, just in case.

It looks like all the Dragon "Lords" from the Fate Reforged set are going to be in it. same with Captivating Vampire. Hurray!!
