True-Name or Goyf

Legacy forum

So i am building a RUG Delver deck and was wondering which is better to run True-Name Nemesis or Tarmogoyf .

Nemesis is extremely resilient to removal and will eventually close a game out, but Goyf is usually larger and will close a game faster, but at the cost of being easily removed.

Just looking for opinions and reasons to run one over the other.

Why not both?

Traditional RUG Delver plays just Delver of Secrets  Flip , Nimble Mongoose , and Tarmogoyf . The deck curves at 1 other than goyf, since most of the threats are 1 and the counterspells are either 1 or free like Force of Will . Here is a recent list for reference . link

Tarmogoyf by a lot. 1-2 True-Name Nemesis might make it some where into the 75, but it's not hugely important nor does it synergies well with RUG all the time.

RUG is all about tempo and mana denial. Between Wasteland , Daze and the 18 or so lands, getting to 3 mana isn't always so easy. RUG also wants to close the game out quickly, and nothing hits like Tarmogoyf for the cost. It's not even that easy to remove, save Swords to Plowshares , since it's usually out of Lightning Bolt range.

True-Name Nemesis plays much better with grindy decks that also have access to Stoneforge Mystic and equipment. A simple 3 power unblockable can be outraced by most decks, put a Umezawa's Jitte on it and that's basically impossible.

@ h20 The deck at hand almost never has 3 mana to cast a creature. Besides there are quite a few answers to TNN. Golgari Charm a T1 Thoughtseize , Inquisition of Kozilek or Duress will do it also. Yeah True-Name Nemesis is a tad harder to kill then Tarmogoyf take into consideration the deck. Tarmogoyf is the better fit for the deck.

Neither. Eric Rill got 1st with 4x Deathrite Shaman 4x Delver of Secrets  Flip 1x Edric, Spymaster of Trest and 4x Young Pyromancer at a recent Legacy event. True-Name Nemesis rocks in my USA delver a a sword carrier. Never owned a goyf, never will. Your deck looks pretty good, i'll probably playtest against it after posting this. At first glance I'd look into making room for Stifle .
