For nykthos you build devotion quickly by using cards like Phalanx Leader and Precinct Captain and then enchanting them with Murder Investigation or a Gift of Orzhova so then you will get tokens faster and make other creatures on your side of the field stronger. Spear of Heliod is used for removal, devotion, and stronger creatures, the Whip of Erebos is for giving all of the creatures lifelink so your creatures can get stronger while keeping your Archangel of Thune safe from cards that target attacking creatures and then you can whip a creature or two in from the grave. Fiendslayer Paladin is just an awesome card and can help me gain more life even if the whip isnt on the field.
