How to: Play Magic for ~$6.

Modern Budget RW (Boros) Weenie

If you're anything like me, you know you like your budget decks. Decks that, while not being entirely competitive, work well enough to say you enjoy playing it. And the kinds of decks that don't make a dent in your wallet with foils and sleeves, and for the cards in general. Many of us wished we could play Magic with pocket change before. I hear you, ladies and gentlemen, and I've come to your aid.

Why R/W?

When I went about trying to make this deck, I had to decide on a color, or two. I knew red has historically had some of its most well-working decks tend to be very cheap, as well as Mountain being the second cheapest basic land, so I went with that. But I wanted a wider pool to pick from, to help give it some variety, and more resources. Noting that Plains is currently the cheapest basic land, I went along with that as well.

Cost of the Deck

If you haven't already guessed, the goal of this deck was to make it as cheap as possible. That essentially means, no rares, no mythics, not even uncommons, just commons. The original goal was to get this down to about $5. I went along doing some quick math, assuming that the average price of a common would be about $.15-$.16 in order to work. Just by doing a quick search on this site for commons, we can find that there aren't very many that break below this price. Well, $.15 * 60 cards = $9. That wasn't going to fly. If it were possible to make a deck for $5, each card in it would have to be $.08, which is highly unlikely. So, by taking out the price of the basic lands in this deck, which at most LGS that I know of, you can borrow for free, we wind up with $.15 * 40 = $6. Now that is much closer to my goal.

Now, as for the more specific math, by subtracting the price of the Mountains and Plains at $.14 and $.12 respectively, we wind up with $2.22 in basic lands. Subtracting that from the current TCGPlayer price of $8.93, we wind up with a grand total of $6.71 in cards for a deck. Not too shabby if I do say so myself. I don't believe I would ever like to break the ceiling of $7, though.

How the Deck Works

Since I've already typed a huge wall of text explaining my challenge above, I'm just going to talk about the aim of the deck instead of listing individual card explanations.

The deck is essentially a weenies Boros deck with pump spells and some evasion to make sure that damage hits. We also have Fling as our splurge card, at a whopping $.22, which helps us smack our opponents directly should getting around the block be difficult. Act of treason works as an awesome sac outlet as well for us.

TL;DR I challenged myself to make one of the cheapest decks possible. This is what I came up with.

I've marked this as needs help because suggestions and comments are always welcome. Don't forget to playtest and Upvote!

Updates Add

Hi all! It's been awhile since I updated this deck, and I figured now would be as good a time as ever to do it. I've gone through each standard block from Battle for Zendikar to Ahmonket and made some changes to the deck as new cards have been released. Changes this round include:

-4 Skyknight Leigonnaire : The double-color cost felt too restrictive and slow, despite having haste. These have been replaced by:

+3 Sky Skiff, which is colorless, thus fixing the problem Skyknight gave us, and it gives our friend Boros Recruit some evasive damage, should the first strike and the 1/1 body prove to not be enough to punch through.

+1 Celestial Flare

-2 Tormenting Voice, which is being replaced by the bigger, better Cathartic Reunion.

I haven't as of yet, but I am considering cutting the Goblin Heelcutters as well. I am not sure what I would replace it with, though, so as always, any suggestions are welcome!
