Quicksilver amulet

Modern Deck Help forum

I want to build a ramp deck that uses quicksilver amulet to cheat out big threats ( progenitus, emrakul, etc)

My question is: how many should I run? Do I need a full playset?

Elvish Piper might be a better idea since you're doing ramp. If you ramp to 5 mana on T3 or such, it'd be faster and more efficient than Quicksilver Amulet.

I like piper but it's vulnerable to removal. My playgroup doesn't have a lot of artifact hate, and the piper would be swiftly met with a lightning bolt 99% of the time.

Quicksilver Amulet or Elvish Piper aren't the best cards for cheating in biggies since they both rely on you having the creature you want to 'cheat in' in hand. The better way to go about it is use non-creature cards that create creatures (like Bitterblossom, Khalni Garden, Lingering Souls, etc...) and put only a few big, bad meanies in then use something like Proteus Staff or Polymorph on one of your useless tokens to hit your Griselbrand, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn or Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur. Grisel and Jin are the best cheat creatures to use because of the 7 card draw they provide, and Emrakul is just nasty as an attacker. You might also use Zombie Infestation and Goryo's Vengeance in the deck as well; infestation as an outlet to dump excess cards and biggies to reanimate as well as to create a token to morph, and goryo's to get biggies from the grave (if they go there) and also as a backup plan (in case your other plan fails to materialize).

My vision though is not just to pop out big creatures, but to do it on my opponents end step. The amulet pretty much gives all my creatures flash. I'm running full play sets of cards like Gaea's Revenge, Hydra Broodmaster, Dragonlord Atarka, etc and I am running one copy of emrakul and one of the new ulamog from BFZ. The only ramp comes on the form on Mystics and caryatids and a playset of nykthos..

again, my playgroup doesn't do artifact hate, and i really Want to avoid stepping outside of red/green. I know Tooth and Nail is a thing, which may be better for ramping but even still, ramping to 4 mana is way faster than trying to entwine tooth and nail, and since my deck doesn't truly need the amulet, it would be a nice secondary plan of action if I happen to need to cast something other than atarka or Gaea's revenge and can only leave open 4 mana..

I dont want to use it as my sole strategy, which is what I think you are all assuming I am doing. So do I need all 4 or not

I would say run between 2-4. If you have easy ways of casting your creatures, then the Amulets aren't quite as useful.

I used to run a Quicksilver Amulet deck back in the day, it ran all the Tronlands and finished people with Rune-Scarred Demon, Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, and Darksteel Colossus. Since most of my threats cost so much, I ran four amulets to always have one handy.

You should probably run a full playset of Quicksilvers. In fact, you probably need a full set of something else which does the same thing, which is why you're seeing a lot of Elvish Piper recommendations.

An artifact alternative which isn't quite as good as the piper is Deathrender. It kinda wants a sac outlet to work correctly, though. With cards like Viscera Seer and Catacomb Sifter, you can sac and scry to get the big baddies into your hand.

GB Tron is an interesting proposition.

i actually like the idea of GB tron. and Deathrender is pretty cool.

what i may end up doing is running a playset of quicksilver and also a playset of Tooth and Nail. the idea of using a tutor as well to dig things out (Demonic Tutor comes to mind, if only it was modern legal, but this is just a casual deck so who cares, right?) Proteus Staff also seems like it would be cool in a pinch as well, but there's no guarantee that i will hit something good with it.

i have been experimenting with Elemental Bond to draw cards when certain creatures enter the batlefield..if i could find a way to make tons of 3/3 tokens without any problem that would be a really cool deck, and then i can have a dig engine to put the amulet to use. in a mono green deck that would be a lot of fun

I run sometimes run Quicksilver Amulet as a one of in a Tron sideboard. The card is great against control because the creature itself can't be countered, but at 8 mana for a total activation, its a very slow main strategy, likely too slow for (at least competitive) modern.
