Modern Deck Help forum

It may be my sleep addled mind taking but couldn't you run a deck with only counters and removal to flip Thing in the Ice  Flip?

You could have 4 thingamabobs and everything else is just counters for every play and removal like Path to Exile for anything that makes it through.

Muller's Standard Mono-Blue Prison deck is nearly all instants & sorceries so it does pretty much that after sideboarding in 4x Thing in the Ice  Flip :D

Yes, but you'd also need a healthy supply of card draw to maintain CA. Lands like Celestial Colonnade, Creeping Tar Pit, etc. would be essential. Draw-Go style control in Modern is difficult and generally runs creatures with Flash like Snapcaster Mage, Restoration Angel, and such.

Tapping out turn two while playing control is generally wrong. If you're on the play, you want to counter a Tarmogoyf with a Spell Snare or keep mana up for Mana Leak in other situations. You'd ideally want to play Thing in the Ice  Flip on turn 4-5, this way you'd have mana up for answers. The problem with this is that Tron is a house, so you'd like to keep them off of getting their Tron turn 3-4. Ghost Quarter main, Crumble to Dust (usually side), etc. are good answers. You could slow down Tron by countering their tutors, but ideally taking care of their land base is best. Aggro decks could also be an issue, as a resolved Collected Company would easily be too much for 1-1 removal spells. See also Affinity.

The answer to this is to run sweepers like Pyroclasm, Anger of the Gods, Supreme Verdict, Wrath of God, Damnation, etc. You could also run Liliana of the Veil + Lingering Souls, given you have enough card draw to support the discard. Souls gives you some chumps and can buy you some time. Also a 1/1 with evasion can be a win-con.

One last thought, it depends on what other one or two colors you'd want to go with in order to play off of their strengths in your current meta. If you have a ton of combo decks, play for discard, likewise for Aggro play for sweepers. Take a look at your meta and build a few sample lists like Jesksai, Sultai, Grixis, and Esper.

I'm toying with the idea of an Esper control/tempo list. Hmm...
