Alternative to Fetches?
Modern Deck Help forum

I'm working on building a "somewhat" budget Modern deck (my first foray into the format) and going with G/U Infect. I thought about going mono-green but I really like the blue interactions so I'm giving it a shot. My only issue is with the lands... I know that I need Inkmoth Nexus, and Pendlehaven will be nice, but is there any cheaper alternatives to Misty Rainforest and Breeding Pool? I've got Yavimaya Coast's already from standard, so I guess I could use them... I saw a card called Rocky Tar Pit today and started to wonder if something like it existed for G/B. Couldn't find anything... Any suggestions?

Thanks for the quick response! I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some other alternative. I've got Wooded Foothills and a Windswept Heath and plan on using them for the time being until I can trade up to Misty Rainforest.

There are Grasslands and Bad River. There are no enemy fetch lands like this, so if you want a fetch of that colour you'll have to use Misty Rainforest. Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse are good budget adds. Thornwood Falls, Lumbering Falls, Simic Growth Chamber, and Temple of Mystery are all good dual lands for your colour.

MenacingBunny Both of those are not Modern legal, just so you know. And enter the battlefield tapped lands, especially in infect, can cause the opponent to have too much time to catch up, or even win(Burn, Affinity, Amulet Bloom and Storm are some examples of decks that wouldn't mind that extra turn, and then beat you).

You can go with 4x Breeding Pools, 4x wooded foothills, and 4x hinterland harbor for now. I use that land type of land combo playing a 60/40 color split dual deck in modern without issue alongside some utility lands that tap for colorless.

Honestly, you do not need the Misty Rainforests. The deck runs 2 Pendelhaven, 2-3 forests, 2-3 Breeding Pools and 7-8 fetches that can get a green source, plus your playset of Inkmoth Nexus and maybe the one Dryad Arbor. Sure, Misty Rainforest is a blue/green fetchland and can be used in this blue/green deck, but it is not necessary.

I'm with avrgeboy123 here. Mistys do take the deck to the highest possible level of performance, but they increase the cost of the deck by like 150% while only increasing consistency by like 5%. That 5% means the world in a tournament setting, but for your local FNM Windswept Heath will be just fine.

Jay: There is actually 0% difference. Using 4x Misty Rainforest and say 4x Verdant Catacombs as your playset of fetches in this particular deck has the same level of functionality as using 4x Windswept Heath and 4x Wooded Foothills. All of the fetchable lands are forests so we don't care if the fetchland is U/G, R/G, B/G, or W/G. So long as they can fetch forests, it is irrelevant which ones you use.

I was under the impression there was usually a singleton Island to fetch; my mistake. In that case it's purely for aesthetics, I suppose. Go ahead and use your heaths lol.

I had the same issue when I was first investing in modern. I think everyone asks, "Do I really need these $40 fetches?" at some point in their modern career. I haven't seen your deck list, but if it's the average infect I think Yavimaya Coast would be a perfect budget alternative. It enters untapped and gives you the colors you need. Paying life is not a bad thing in a deck that tries to eliminate your opponent with one big swing.

I had about 220 in trade value to help boost my twin deck. I could choose between 4 scalding tarns, or 4 snapcaster mages. I picked the mages because the amount of difference they make is greater by far than the tarns
Invest in what makes the biggest difference, and then fill in from there

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I plan on using some of my Yavimaya Coast, along with the Breeding Pool I'm trying to acquire on Pucatrade. I'll use my playset of Wooded Foothills alongside my single Windswept Heath and maybe try to get my hands on some Hinterland Harbor to hold me over and increase consistency some.

Don't do it. Stay Mono Green untill you can play with Fetchlands and Shocks. Spending money on cards that will end up in your bulk box just makes the cards you really want more expensive. Think about it like this: every "budget" land you buy will add to the end cost of the expensive once, so if you spend 10$ on 4 Hinterland Harbor's your 3 Windswept's will cost you 40$ instead of 30$.
Just get the last 3 Fetches and 2-3 shocks over time instead, especially if your on a budget.

No, there are no alternatives. However, you can run Windswept Heath and Wooded Foothills, both which fetch green, in addition to Breeding Pool. I'd also say that pain lands really should not be used outside of standard.
