What is the funniest way you have caught someone cheating?

Had a few friends for our group when we were younger. One of them said whoops I dropped my hand on my deck, and while picking it back up, clearly drew about 5 extra cards.
Another guy stole a couple of decks from different people. He was not a good person.

a long time ago, when I first got into the game and was a casual player, the friend that got me into the game used to cheat like crazy. he had a mono green deck. he would use something like Cultivate to search his library, then he would put the deck below the table to search through it. at first, we didn't think anything of it, but then we realized every time he did this, he had a Pelakka Wurm to follow it up again, these were casual games, and our decks looked more like sealed decks than anything else. the wurm usually won him the game.

The bloke that taught me magic made up most of the rules. Naturally he won every game till I figured out how the game is meant to be played.
He also played 60 cards decks with only 8 land. (right at the top every match)

The funniest way i found somebody cheating was at a game convention. We were playing pauper and he was complaining about how he needed one more mana. At the end of the turn, he said screw this and he literally searched through his entire deck, revealed a Mountain , then put it on top. He then asks me if that was okay and i said that he cheated. he then started to make a fuss about it so i called the judge (not certified, but had been playing since alpha and knew the rules) and there was a hilarious shouting match.

Used Slaughter Games on someone's Thragtusk to find 8 of them in the deck. Proceeded to kick his ass (at the game) before calling a judge.

Ouch those things are bad.
My deck that got stolen was buried outside of the house we were at that day. I did not find out till more then 12 years after. It bugged me just as much that another friend knew about it. It was just a fallen empires thallid deck. He was not happy that it beat his expensive deck though.

This didn't happen to me, but rather a friend of mine. He was playing against a younger kid at my LGS, and was well and truly beaten by a Karn Liberated that hit the field. After the match, the kid told him that he had put the Karn on his chair and sat on it before the match so that he was guaranteed to get it. The judge was called and the kid was DQ'd. He would have actually gotten away with it if he hadn't told my friend that he cheated.

I caught someone who snuck in several good Theros cards to the Born of the Gods prerelease. The first game he was able to play Nylea, God of the Hunt , Bow of Nylea , and Xenagos, The Reveler ... Some people are lucky, but not THAT lucky. I still beat him (he was an awful player) and asked a judge to check his pool after I left the table. Sure enough, he had about 10 extra Theros rares sleeved up in his deck box. Needless to say he was booted from the event.
Another time at a prerelease, my opponent presented his deck for cutting and said "ONLY cut. Don't shuffle." Being a new player, I didn't think much of it. After the first game ended I saw him "mana stack" his deck before presenting and called him on it when he said I could not shuffle. He threw a huge fit and a judge came over... I wound up shuffling his deck quite thoroughly and he was mana dry the other two games, making it an easy win for me.

friend who taught me to play always cheated to win, had a 100 card deck (not edh, just had 100 cards) had only 4 lands, Cloudpost and always had all 4 of them first hand, and could always hardcast eldrazi (he didn't have the titans, but still, I was playing mono U control that almost looked like a sealed deck). long story short, we started shuffling each others deck, then, suddenly, he never drew any lands... coincidence?

"mana stack'' is land card card or whatever right? That bugs me when someone tries that. I have never had anyone tell me not to shuffle.

Was my brother the only teacher who didn't cheat? He was a pretty good teacher and actually taught me some stuff about how to find cheaters and counterfeit cards when trading!.

I don't think I was taught by a cheater... Then again I was basically thought by my entire playgroup, not just one person.

No no. What you do when your opponent stacks their deck is take every third card (or every land card, it should be obvious how he stacked) and put that all at the bottom and then present it back to them. Let them call the judge.

The guy that taught me had a few interesting rules. If you forgot to untap, you could not untap was the one I remember most.

Well i was technically one of the "cheaters" but it wasn't anything serious. Let me explain. All throughout highschool me and 4 other friends spent all morning and lunch breaks with a game of chaotic mtg. We had 0 idea what the word "competitive" meant as far as decks go. We all just had a theme we liked like mine was tribal decks i played a lot of vampires (this was during zendikar) we had 1 guy playing artifacts, a guy who loved ramping dragons, a mono green "Timmy" and the guy who just played stuff with no rhyme or reason lol. In games i would pace the table and occasionally grab a small stack off of someones top deck when i wasn't playing and depending on whether i felt they deserved it or not i would screw them over or swing it in their favor. I only did this because my friends, though highly intelligent people, have NO attention to detail. They seriously wouldn't catch on sometimes until i busted out laughing. It was ok though we all just played for fun. no one ever really won anyways since 30 mins isn't long enough to eat and get a 5 way free for all in...unless Bryan brought his infect deck in...it wasn't t2 win fast but it was a pain in the ass regardless so he always got hated out pretty fast

I remember at a GPT I was playing UB control in standard, and during the first round my opponent kept twitching around in his seat, and flicking his cards back and forth as quick as he could. He was regularly straightening his deck. He was playing storm, and he won game one. I suspected something was up, because he tried to go off three times and succeeded on the last, but I was fairly scrubbish so I didn't call a judge. We went to sideboards, and I sided in four Duress . On turn three, I asked him how many cards were in his hand, and he said six, which was what he should have had. I cast duress, and he conceded on the spot. I called the judge instantly, and asked him to check my opponent's hand. Turns out, every time he straightened his deck, he'd quickly nab a card off the top and put it in his hand.

That forgetting to untap rule is really good to learn with.. It really bothers me now how some of the newer players at my lgs just untap things when they need them haha

Nemaros good point. I never forget to untap that is for sure. Maybe we should make a set of rules for "Hardcore Magic". So that you can teach people who already know how to play, to play right.

I doubt many people who started playing as kids run a morally clean slate.
The person who stole my deck had a birthday coming up. This was not the best idea, but I knew he did it. He just would not admit to it. So I stole one of his presents another friend was going to give to him. It was a Halfdane
. I gave it back to the friend who was going to give it as a give about 6 years after that. They were no longer friends by then. That is my shady deed when it comes to magic.

@Didgeridooda: half of the set should just be on remembering/forgetting triggers. I have won so many games because people have forgot their angel token from Geist of Saint Traft and so on, it is ridiculous.

It could really help to make people play better. Remembering to draw at the right time or no draw at all. Hahaha I would hate this format sooooo much. I do not like to play super serious anymore.
February 28, 2014 6:58 p.m.
miracleHat says... #23
I would love that format because people would actually be playing the game. When people forget to untap 1 Mountain it's fine. When they forget to untap that same mountain 5 turns in a row, then i get a bit bugged.

It is especially important to remember, "untap, upkeep, draw" because i run Vendilion Clique as a general in edh. I want to know what they draw and if they have a Counterspell , then they want to counter it.

I am tired when I finally get time to play, so I do not always do things perfect. That is why I prefer a calmer environment with out people hounding every move. That is why I like the shop where I play EDH. They play their serious magic, then play EDH. Their decks are superb on both ends which is nice.

He, I have to chant that internally to remember to untap before I draw to avoid any unpleasant circumstances whenever I'm playing a serious game.

I actually say it out loud just in case my opponent(s) have any gifts for me (aka, Quicken Thoughtseize for the lulz).
February 28, 2014 7:15 p.m.
Haha, don't get me wrong.. I have never told someone off for not untapping their stuff.. Just because I learnt with such a strict (and wrong) rule, it irks me that they get away with doing (nothing) wrong where we quite often punished each other for leaving our whole army tapped haha
February 28, 2014 7:38 p.m.
I mostly play casually with my extended family. One day I played a game with one of my cousins. He didn't play a land on the second turn after drawing. So he picks up his deck, flips through it, and puts a Mountain into play untapped, then keeps playing like that's totally normal.
...Um...
I also played against his brother. Every once in a while, he would look at the top card of his deck when he thought I wasn't looking. Sometimes he'd just put it back, but sometimes he'd point out that he had seen it and put it on the bottom of his deck.
before I started playing, one of my other cousins (we were like 8 at the time) told me that if you forgot to untap at the beginning of your turn, you took 1 damage for each permanent you forgot to untap.

One time, a friend and I were having a 1v1 outside in the shade during (glorious) summertime and I had to take a pee. Being a guy and already in the backyard (and really having to go) I just went in the bushes by the backyard table. When I sat down, my friend started his turn and immediately played Gisela, Blade of Goldnight and whooped my ass on the spot. I had only been playing for a couple months so I was wrecked pretty easily. What really made me laugh, is that after I lost, I looked at the next card in my deck. It was my Gisela. I told my friend and he admitted to rigging the top several cards of his deck and we both laughed it off.

My friend at school always takes things back. It is one of the biggest irks when I counter something and he says "Oh, well then I'll take it back." which I'll respond with "Dude, you can't do that." and he'll say "Does it matter? It's casual play.".
THAT irks me.

I am ok with take backs, but that is a little different. That would not sit well with me. Take backs to me are, hey I tapped wrong let me change that really quick, and right after you play it. Or let me play this instead. To take something back because of a counter is not ok though.
March 1, 2014 2:34 p.m.
Some even, he takes it back A FULL TWO TURNS from when he played it too. I attack with Sedge Scorpion , he blocks, takes back his creature, and puts it in his hand.

Didgeridooda says... #35
That is kind of on you too. If you keep playing with him, and he keeps doing it, you are allowing it. Tell him that you do not want to play with him anymore if that is what he is going to do.
March 1, 2014 2:43 p.m.
take backs are super annoying. my buddy attacked with one card in his hand, so i blocked with Black Cat . and he goes "oh wait, nevermind" -_-

The funniest I had is the lady who was judging at the time was watching this kid play earlier on in the FNM then it came up to me playing against him and she knew me so she came to watch and noticed he was playing entirely different cards. Turns out the kid had opened a box during one of the rounds and put in a whole bunch of cards in to help his deck and he got DQ. But I agree I hate when people go "ohh I forgot to play something last turn let me do it now" it's okay if it's casual but were at a PTQ qualifier you can't be taking back things and remembering triggers a turn later

Had an irresponsible guy show up to a Commander event at my LGS (one with prizes to be awarded) using a two-color deck full of expensive Modern and Standard staples. However, he hadn't sleeved it, or shuffled it, and had a double-sided card in it without one of those placeholder cards, so he bought sleeves and proceeded to began sleeve his cards when the other three players were ready to go. As the event had no time limits and he was taking forever, the other three of us split the work of sleeving his cards up for him so we could get on with it.
Now, for the actual cheating bit- once we played awhile, the other three of us were going at it, but he was barely playing anything because he wasn't drawing mana in one of his colors. He was pouting about it but we'd run out of patience for him; it turns out his deck was poorly shuffled because he'd done a haphazard job of it after we'd sleeved it for him, so he had all cards in one color and all mana in the other. He decided to up and search his deck for the land he needed to put it on top (like Droxium's story). The other two players exploded with rage; I'd have done so also but I went for the "Voice of Reason" route rather than have three grown men shouting about a card game.
The guy stayed on and was casually killed by the other three of us shortly thereafter, partly because (after we exchanged knowing glances) we decided we were tired of him and it was easier than getting a judge to kick him out of the event. Nobody else would play with him after that (all matchups were voluntary only) so he left and I haven't seen him again since.

Someone I saw playing kept a land behind every non land card in his deck, so if he ever needed land, he would swap the land to the front of the sleeve and the non land card to the back by putting his hand behind the table. I didn't know if I could intervene, as it wasn't my game, so I quietly told a judge and they handled it. The other way was someone marking their cards slightly in the back helping them decide on mulligans and what to play (it was hard to notice, but someone called them out on it and the cards seemed to be color coded.

I played a game of standard with my friend in japan. he was running mono black, I was using a home brew naya ramp deck. anyway, we were playing on Skype (my webcam is broken, so I was using my phone which is horribly cracked). the game goes on for a while. we are trading back and forth until im in the commanding position. he proceeds to cast 3 removal spells in a turn. I didntt think anything of it. we kept playing and I eventually won. at the end, he told me he took those three removal spells out of his graveyard. we laughed about it, and it really didn't change anything.

While this isn't cheating, it's along the same lines... Probably the funniest time was when I had just begun playing with a few friends and we thought regenerating a creature put a "regeneration counter" on it. And, due to that "rule," my favorite card was Deity of Scars . Oh, and if he died, he came back with one less counter, and didn't lose them all.

Not quite as bad was my brother that I play table top magic with has about an 80 card deck that may as well be singleton but he is really bad with remembering to draw sometimes even during my turn I'll see him trying to draw and when I call him out on it he says he forgot to draw. Needless to say I don't use casual decks against him.

My friend is always doing subtle things to tilt games in his favor so you have to watch him like a hawk. In one game I caught him trying to do the following:
Draw extra cards
Cast things without paying for them
Using the wrong colors to cast something
Putting cards into his hand instead of the graveyard
etc, etc.
