Name: Render Silent

Color: Blue, WB, White

Type: Instant

Rarity: Rare

Set: Dragon's Maze

Counter target spell. Its controller cant cast spells this turn.

'We have confiscated your spells as evidence. Once we conclude our investigation, you may petition to have them returned.'

Does anyone else see this and think "American Control, based on Aurelia's Fury and 'Render Silent'."?

8 cards in your deck which for 3 CMC will prevent your opponent from having a proper turn.

I could even see using Temporal Mastery for 12 cards which take away most/all of your opponent's turn.

To clarify thats WUU for the mana cost. That out of the way, i just dont know that this is really any better than Dissipate or Counterflux . Most decks only play one card a turn. And it gets counter-countered by dispel.

it is more of a late game spell where you did for something and than cast another or to shut down aggro decks, which want to play 2-3 cheap spells to turn.

If it's real, it's very good against Blitz and aggro decks. There have been one too many times where somebody has played three Rancor s on one dude on turn 3.

If that is real I think the American decks running around now have found an addition.

I like that. Combining a Cancel with a 1-turn Curse of Exhaustion type effect.

This card is almost never good. If you're countering a big spell, the opponent was probably not going to play a 2nd anyway. If you're countering a small spell, you're losing tempo. If you're casting it in the early game, you're probably getting beat down. If you're casting it when your opponent is topdecking, the Silence clause is worthless. You can't cast it on their upkeep to prevent them from playing that turn. Most viable combo decks care more about activated abilities than casting spells. This card is a turd. Cancel is better.

April 5, 2013 4:03 p.m.

it's the same as cancel... except it does more, how can that be bad. even if the silence is not used, it's still produces a counterspell effect.

i don't see the issue. i will be using it.

If this spell is real, then you guys are missing the key part. You don't have to counter a spell to prevent your opponent from casting spells for the rest of the turn. Do it turning their upkeep and prevent them from playing anything at all (unless of course they respond to it in advance, but aggro decks don't

Wait nevermind, just read the "controller" part of it...whoops!

It's not meant to be a 4-of, or even 3-of card.

I would be surprised if people ran more then two of these.

It's kinda like Counterflux . Pretty nice, but not the best.

@theemptyquiver: Cancel is better because it's less color-intensive. If you're playing strictly UW then I suppose Render Silent is marginally better. Give this thing Split Second and then we'd be talking. Also, I've been meaning to email you, I'm just easily distracted :)

April 5, 2013 4:13 p.m.

@Graft yeah...the colors didn't factor into my excitement because I play a lot of esper colors. And I can totally see using this in some great casual stall decks with Venser and some tumble magnets, and stuff.

Email me whenever. I have my phone on me pretty much always, so I reply back pretty quickly.

It's not Blue, WB, White, it's WUU.

April 5, 2013 4:31 p.m.

I don't like it. The situations where the Silence effect will actually come up seem really rare. I'd play Dissipate over this any day.

April 5, 2013 4:34 p.m.

I think it is a good card. Maybe not for standard but for modern or EDH possibly great. Stop combo players, stop storm, and even if you don't stop them from casting other stuff, you still counter a spell.

For all the haters, countering Burning Tree Shaman is nice. Countering your opponent's end of turn spells and reactions is always nice. The areas where Esper wants this are everywhere: you play a spell, i counter it, my turn (vs aggro). My turn, you want to counter my walker, i counter your counter, now you don't get to resto your Snapcaster, or augur or whatever (vs control). It has a good fit into my 35 at least, I doubt it will ever leave my 75.

I love cards like this in general. Reminds me of some of my favorite old cards, Orim's Chant , W/U Fish with chant and Meddling Mage . /nostalgia

April 6, 2013 3:55 a.m.

It will see Modern play since it wrecks Storm and Eggs.

As for countering Burning-Tree Emissary , you seem to not understand the Esper vs aggro matchup. You are NEVER going to be countering their guys for value. Aside from the fact that BTE comes down earlier, if you're tapping out to counter a spell in the early game you are getting hit for a bunch of damage in the same turn. Against these decks, all you want is turn 2-3 Augur of Bolas , Devour Flesh , or Azorius Charm into turn 4 Supreme Verdict , into Sphinx's Revelation . You DO NOT want counterspells. You will be siding your counterspells out for spot removal/Terminus . This is bad vs aggro, just like any 3-mana spell that does not affect the board.

And in control mirrors, Dispel and Negate are better because they are cheaper, and Dissipate is better because it exiles Snapcaster targets (especially in this world of Psychic Spiral s. This card is worse than Dissipate . The other thing is that Dissipate is easier to cast in Esper, because we run 4 colorless lands. You want to be able to cast a counterspell off Drownyard+Hallowed Fountain +Drowned Catacomb .

Basically, this has a place as a SB card vs Storm and Eggs, but in Standard we have better options.

April 6, 2013 4:21 a.m.

You feel so strongly.

harrydemon117 says... #25

@mhuston: They CAN still cast Resto in response to you casting this before it resolves. It doesn't stop a player from casting multiple spells this turn, only forces them to do it NOW while this is on the stack.

This COULD lead to some interesting options as you basically force your opponent's hand before he wants to use it. The times that this would come in handy don't seem to be that often however

raca137 says... #26

Once the Snapcaster block is gone so goes Cavern of souls. Counterspell decks can make a come back again with a little help of creature removal on top of that in white blue and black.

This is going to be a card that stops someone from comboing out if there is going to be any new turn 1 mana ramp into either blue or white mana. Not a 4 of but a 2 of unless you play all blue white counter flash which is going to be real again with all these new flash creatures.

Dispel is going to be a power card to be played again since they have 4 mana 5/5 trample instant creatures now :(
