Play Styles Of A Red/White Deck??

Deck Help forum

So I was given a red/white plainswalker as a gift, Nahiri, the Harbinger to be specific. I'm not very familiar with red/white play styles. If I could get your input on how such decks play that would be very helpful.

PS - any advice on how to play with a plainswalker would also be good. From my limited knowledge, a plainswalker is like another player. That's all I got.

Thank you in advance.

Which format? Modern, standard, legacy, EDH? Are people letting you use it as your commander?

For how planeswalkers work, check here

First of all, I'm assuming this is casual, or maybe modern. There's lots of ways to play R/W!

Aggro is the most traditional route. Play cheap creatures with haste to go under your opponents defenses, or use a weenie strategy where each of your creatures power up your army to beat your opponent's face in. Here, Nahiri would help you kill big threats, and dig for more gas later on when your hand is getting low.

Burn is another effective strategy. With burn, your goal is to get them to 0 life mainly through "burn" spells like Lightning Bolt, Boros Charm, Lightning Helix, etc. You can run a few creatures to augment the strategy. However this archetype is very weak to lifegain and isn't terribly interesting to play. Also Nahiri wouldn't be very useful either, you'd rather just run more burn.

There's also an equipment based deck that would work pretty well with Nahiri. You run powerful equipment like Sword of Fire and Ice, Batterskull, Lightning Greaves, or Loxodon Warhammer. You attach them to creatures that like being equipped like Puresteel Paladin, Stone Haven Outfitter or Weapons Trainer and go to town while your opponents cower under the might of your massive voltron power.

However, I think Nahiri performs best in a control shell. With a R/W control deck you would run lots of removal spells like Path to Exile, Chained to the Rocks, Wrath of God, Oblivion Ring to keep their creatures under control, then win with a hard to interact with threat like Myth Realized or Assemble the Legion.

Hopefully that helps a bit!

These are some good points other commentors have made. I'd also point out that Nahiri the Harbinger's +1 ability is designed to work really well with the Madness and Delirium mechanics that are used in the Shadows over Innistrad set.

You can use some great control red cards with that like Lightning Axe for instance. If your playing ins Standard right now you could make a very nice deck with her out of mostly Shadows over Innistrad cards.

Aragnor's comment alludes to the Boro's guild cards as well. Those are all red / white combo cards too, so you can give those a look and hopefully they'll give you some ideas.

Thank you all. You're all being very helpful. It will most likely be just for casual. Also I already have a burn deck (I'm rather proud of it) the only card I really need for it is maybe a Sulfuric Vortex.

I haven't got money for any new cards right now though I have quite a collection of red white and gold cards. Looking at most of them they seem to be mostly things to boost creatures or themselves. (Eg, prowess, unleash, battalion, etc)

Would it be smart to make a deck based on pumping my creatures? Is there any artifacts or enchantments to give all my creatures like counters or an ability? (Eg, first strike, indestructible, etc)
