Dragonlord Ojutai, best direction?

Commander Deck Help forum

Just looking for a little help for which direction to go for Dragonlord Ojutai. Some builds go for Voltron, others go for a more controll-y build. Which is more effective, do you guys think?

¿Por que no los dos? :-)

Control is probably more effective and certainly more competitive. But I have more Timmy in me than Johnny or Spike, so I'd probably build him with a bunch more Voltron.

Yeah, do both. Reanimator voltron. Stuff like Scythe of the Wretched and Deathrender with a whole bunch of control stuff to protect your goodies. White has really good reanimator stuff too. Like:

Reya Dawnbringer, False Defeat, Miraculous Recovery, Twilight Shepherd, Defy Death, etc.

One thing to note is that the budget for this deck is almost limitless. The only real limit is time. As I have decided on about 50 per month, so things like Sword of Fire and Ice aren't totally off the table. (lands are a bit trickier, less fond of dropping a ton of money on those, so the land base won't be including Tundra or anything. The functional lands are fine, like Minamo, School at Water's Edge)

Tagging the Llamas ...

lemmingllama due to Anticipating the Strikes, and elpokitolama due to Ojou-sama~~

Well, I believe Ojutai is rather lackluster as a general in U/W given other great options like Grand Arbiter Augustin IV, Geist of Saint Traft, and Hanna, Ship's Navigator. Still, if you're hellbent on playing this dragon, the best way to play him around mid-level commander is via tempo control. Much like with Geist, he thrives off of a board with a very limited number of permanents. As such, cards like Armageddon, Cataclysm, Divine Reckoning, and Balancing Act tend to be pretty decent with him. Add in a suite of countermagic and draw, some VERY cheap voltron stuff, a few efficient creatures, and protection-oriented cards like Propaganda. There's your deck's shell.

How competitive do you intend to have your build be? Dragonlord Ojutai isn't the most competitive option, but it certainly gets the cards flowing.

Control is a more competitive option, but that is simply because you will be equipped to answer the more broken decks out there. Ojutai isn't the best general for this, since you could use Grand Arbiter Augustine IV or Oloro, Ageless Ascetic instead.

However, in a more fun group, I much prefer a more voltron approach. You ramp and control the first couple turns, then try to bury them with dragons and all the cards you get due to free Anticipates. Ojutai still isn't the best commander for this, but the built in hexproof and the card advantage is good.

Well, with regards to how competitive I'd like it to be, I'd like to be able to have a fighting chance against actual competitive decks, as I plan on traveling around to events and such. However I don't want to take the fun out of my regular playgroup, who don't play those high-tier decks. I tried putting together a Gisela, Blade of Goldnight deck, (because angel waifu :3) But the competitive builds for her all focused around destroying opponents lands as a win-con, Something my playgroup despises. (You should have seen the looks when I played Razia's Purification...)My next choice of commander was Dragonlord Ojutai, because he's my favourite dragonlord, and I also pulled a promo of him at the Dragons pre-release

PhoenixWright,
Yeah, I totally get the appeal of playing an actual Elder Dragon in EDH. Another option you may want to look at though is Bruna, Light of Alabaster. She's not as borken as some of the other competitive options, but is probably stronger than Ojutai.

Also: Angel :-)

Ojutai is okay at mid-level. It will not do well vs competitive decks. Consider switching to Geist. Your group shouldn't have too many problems dealing with that guy. Can't kill him because of hexproof? Then just destroy the stuff attached to him! Then he's just a bear.

Hmm.A mid-tier deck would be pretty much perfect for the situations I play in.I think I'll slap together a slightly more voltron focused Ojutai deck, and tag it here.

If you guys don't mind giving a bit of feedback on that, that would be cool :3

Also, I approve the Kill la Kill gifs. However... Gisela is still best grill :3
