I dunno RedCloud2012, I think there's a reason that I've 2-0'd or 2-1'd every match against Red Boros, Red Gruul, and RDW I've ever played with this deck (I think that's about 9 competitive matches). The only deck that I ever felt pressured by was one that ran Frostburn Weird
out of the sideboard. I have even outraced Volcanic Strength
before. I wholeheartedly consider red-based aggro one of my strongest matchups based on statistical evidence and theoretical conjecture.
Apoptosis, throw a Spell Rupture into the mix for fun times :D

Jimhawk fun times indeed. What I like most is the possibility of an aggro/control ("Caggro"? "Agtrol"?). The concepts of "aggro" "midrange" and "control" didn't exist when I played way back in the day and I hate the notion that a deck has to "fit" into one of these 3 boxes to be viable. It limits creativity by making the presumption that a viable deck has to fit one of these categories. Now the question is whether it really is viable or not... I shall explore!

Im with you on that!! my deck that i run can easily win with aggro on turn 4 yet has a exquisite transition for mid-to-late game and i have loads of fun with it!! Also aggro control seems very interesting. The only problem i would have would be rather to cast my turn 2 creature or save it for lets say an Essence Scatter so depending on who your opponent is, or rather what deck he is using, would force you to hold your mana for the counter spell or play your creatures.

btw Jimhawk i am a big fan of your aggro decks and i was wondering if you could check out my Seal Team Naya deck because im kind of stumped on whether I should keep Legion Loyalist so my big guys can't be chump blocked or maybe take him out for more instant, sorceries, or different creatures??

Apoptosis, the Delver decks of the past year were efficient aggro-control decks that used tempo spells and efficient creatures to win games. I don't believe in strictly categorizing decks because they can fill multiple roles and can be constructed multiple ways.
Basically, decks can be any combination of the three major types. Aggro-control, aggro-midrange, midrange-control, whatever you want.

Thatcher Revolt is bad unless I have a Hellrider out already or without a Mayor of Avabruck Flip . Since I don't use Mayor of Avabruck Flip and I win 80% of the time on the turn I cast Hellrider , it is a dead card for me.

How essential are Blind Obedience and Ajani, Caller of the Pride in this deck? If you had to replace them with something, what would it be?
Also, how has Assemble the Legion worked for you? I'd imagine that the game would be over by the time you are producing a meaningful amount of soldiers.
March 30, 2013 3:06 p.m.
They are non-essential cards that I would replace with more creatures, preferably two-drops. The top candidates would be Knight of Glory
and Wojek Halberdiers
. That said, Blind Obedience
has won me a lot of games and really helps my Naya Blitz and Jund Aggro matchups as well as my UWR Flash matchup. I mainly use Ajani, Caller of the Pride
as a pseudo-fifth Silverblade Paladin
.
I have won a few games with Assemble the Legion . I bring it in against control decks with limited interaction with enchantments but that I expect to be killing all my creatures, such as Jund Midrange, UWR Flash, and Bant Control. It can especially win out of nowhere with Hellrider and Rally the Peasants .
March 30, 2013 3:13 p.m.
Would this work with a Thundermaw Hellkite ? i like the layout but i would like to add hellkite in here.
March 31, 2013 1 p.m.
Definitely, I would probably drop the two Rally the Peasants for two Thundys.
March 31, 2013 3:20 p.m.
Nice, may i ask how you fare against quick naya human decks? say.. Act I / Scene I - The Win
and awesome deck + 1 - i am borrowing this lay out but putting in two Thunderbabes - i think hellrider - thunderbabe breaks the game.
March 31, 2013 4:02 p.m.
In general, it depends on who wins the die roll, actually. Whoever plays first in that matchup will generally win. I think my match record reflects that pretty accurately, something like 2-2 for competitive matches.
I will say that Nearheath Pilgrim will often swing the matchup in my favor, but it's still basically a coin flip. The way aggro is these days, the person who has to block first is the person who loses.
March 31, 2013 4:24 p.m.
good point , well thing is i am stuck between either the deck i linked, or this one with the thundermaw or adding in 2 Blasphemous Act in place of the Rally the Peasants since reckoner is here, it would be a good finisher.
Either way, both decks are similar but one takes early game by force, this one keeps early, and dominates midgame. -- thing is the one i currently have the naya humans is way too quick ( in a good way ) but given it is staggered, and opponent has fatties like Thragtusk and Restoration Angel i am bound to lose.

Ever thought of trying out Madcap Skills in this deck? For more early, aggressive starts? Works wonders with Boros Reckoner and Silverblade Paladin :)
April 8, 2013 9:32 a.m.
It actually was a serious consideration for a while. I might try out a separate Boros build with more first-strikers like Elite Inquisitor and Precinct Captain to better take advantage of the power bonus it provides.
April 8, 2013 10:24 a.m.
I had a similare build to yours but with addition of;
Ash Zealot , Spark Trooper , Madcap Skills , Wojek Halberdiers ,
Without the medic, blind obedience, rally and nearhearth in sideboard. Some ~20 lands. Was quite aggressive with very early wins. Yours seems to be better for longer games though :)

Looks good! Building a red boros deck and reading all the comments is kind of converting me to human boros...

@JimhawkI was just wondering why you only put one Cavern of Souls in the deck?Wouldn't 2 or 3 help more against counter?
April 15, 2013 5:57 a.m.
Part of it is card availability, but honestly, at 22 lands, having only 3 colorless sources over 4 or 5 is really helpful to the manabase to support the high-saturation noncreature spells like Ajani, Caller of the Pride
and Boros Charm
. I had two in for a while and it worked, but I also had a higher creature count at the time.
I think two would be ideal and perhaps boarding in a third would be an good plan as well depending on the meta. It's not entirely necessary, though, as counterspells are not running rampant in the format at the moment.

If card availability wasn't an issue, what would you bring to the deck?
April 16, 2013 2:24 a.m.
One or both of either a second Cavern of Souls or a fourth Boros Reckoner .
April 16, 2013 3:01 a.m.
Hello,
+1, you did a good job and this deck is very fun to play. Can you just explain me in which case or how do you use Assemble the Legion please?
April 22, 2013 4:05 a.m.
Assemble the Legion
comes in against the slow control decks, like Esper or Bant, as well as UWR Flash. All these archetypes load up on creature removal after game one, so they're soft to enchantments that win the game on their own.
Every game I have cast Assemble the Legion , it has won because my opponents have worn out all their removal at that point. The key is to apply continuous pressure so you can sneak it through opposing countermagic.

In response I would like to point out you are a weak match up for me as well as other human based decks. My burn controls overflow and faiths sheild deals with Resto nicely. All the most popular decks are playing human base such as Naya humans Naya Blitz The Aristocrats, Boros Humans ,G/R Humans and Humanimater and R/W/B Tokens. So what your saying isnt really true. Stromkirk is a beast against all these match ups running Boros Charm and Faiths shield.
