Monsters of Nyx —April 20, 2014

Brainstorming ideas and card options from Journey into Nyx. I'm not sure Jund is the best way to continue Monsters and my bromance with Domri Rade. I think Ajani, Mentor of Heroes would be a great mentor for Domri, but that would require Naya. And with this being a thread for Jund, I'll keep that sort of speculation out of here.

Mana Confluence: This is probably the biggest addition to the deck. Smoothing out mana for the sake of 1 life per activation. I imagine the correct number is either 2 or 3 since I don't want to be taking that much damage from my lands.

Temple of Malady: Might be a better scry land than Temple of Malice. Maybe a 1-1 split? We'll see. It's nice to have options.

Magma Spray: Probably not worth it unless Xathrid Necromancer + Athreos, God of Passage becomes a huge part of the meta. And in that case I'd probably rather be playing Anger of the Gods anyway.

Setessan Tactics: This might be an interesting card to use since Monsters' creatures usually are so much bigger. However, I'm not sure if just plain old Mizzium Mortars isn't just as good.

Pharika, God of Affliction: Nope.

So...not all that much. I'm not sure how viable Jund Monsters will remain as a deck archetype come the new set. Time (and testing) will tell.

This looks solid, and it was a good idea to eliminate the Ghor-Clan Rampager . I am also running jund, and am attempting to acquire some Polukranos, World Eater . One the other hand, since we're putting in some serious lands, hopefully quickly, I would consider Rubblehulk , although I don't know what to eliminate for it, either. I like this deck, and wish you the best with it. Also, did you consider either Gaze of Granite or Jarad's Orders ? If so, what eliminated them for you, because I kind of can't justify the former, either, but I am running the later. I am using my graveyard more than you, though.

PS: +1, and please swing by and look at my jund deck, too. It's Jund-i Goodness in Standard (comments / advice??)

@ malfeischylde: I've since returned 3 Ghor-Clans to the deck. They help in many matchups, and representing the rampagers as a trick sometimes means you get free damage in.

Rubblehulk just doesn't do enough. Especially since we don't have that many lands. It's more mana creatures. And Rubblehulk doesn't count those. Jarad's Orders is useless, since Jund Monsters isn't a graveyard-based deck. You really want the threats in your hand.

Gaze of Granite isn't a bad idea. But the double-black is rough on the mana base. It's also a big mana sink, so I'd often rather just have the Mizzium Mortars.

I notice from your sideboard notes that you are siding in Ultimate Price , Putrefy , and Whip of Erebos vs. BW control, Jund mirror, RG monsters and Mono-blue. When do you not side those cards in? They seem great in pretty much every matchup except burn.

The first two are pretty bad vs. Control. Whip would be okay, except I've got 10 other sideboard cards to bring in, too so I don't really bother.

what do you cut vs control, Scavenging Ooze ? Courser of Kruphix ? Reaper of the Wilds ?

2 Mortars, 1 Putrefy, 3 Polukranos, 3 Courser of Kruphix, 1 Domri Rade,

I'm constantly going back and forth on whether I'd rather have the Scavenging Oozes or the Coursers in the Control match. Currently, I feel that we need Scavenging Ooze to help against elixir of immortality and the post-boardwipe plan. However, we also need each bit of card advantage we can muster, and Courser helps filter through your lands that would otherwise be dead-draws. So I'm still testing things out.

My current sideboard brings in the following:

1x Chandra, 1x Xenagos, 2x Rakdos's Return, 2x Mistcutter, 2x Abrupt Decay, 2x Golgari Charm.

I run an R/G monsters deck, and I love the Courser of Kruphix paired with Domri Rade . Agree that Reaper of the Wilds is too slow in this deck. I like Ghor-Clan Rampager for the option to bloodrush.Looks like a fun deck!

Fanatic of xenagos > courser of kruphix for this type of deck

Not at all. Courser does everything I need it to. Fanatic is a loxodon Smiter. And Smiter is pretty poorly positioned right now.
